Here is the funny thing in this whole discussion... no one can nail down an exact definition of what people are referring to as that hyperbolic, hyper-negative post quality... and yet pretty much everyone would point to the same few posters as being just that. The exact reactions in this thread to this topic are a perfect illustration of the hyperbole. We are "turning into WSI"? Really? I think everyone here sees that isn't the case, and in fact the guys at WSI would probably be insulted. WSI runs their site a lot differently than we do, for better or worse. They ban entire subjects of discussion, suspend people for being a "dark cloud", or even for content posted on other sites. They feel that keeps their board cleaner, whereas we feel its better to allow posters more license. And we do, so don't even bother trying to say otherwise. I personally have no issue with being "negative" or "positive" - its the way its delivered. You can say "Oh come on Ozzie, really? Leaving Peavy in for another batter? WTF?", and we all get that. But when your post says "Ozzie is a f***ing ass-clown who couldn't manage a little league team!!!", and when the board is full of posts like that... who wants to read that? This, IMO, is the biggest reason why we see fewer and fewer good, in-depth discussions, and why many of the knowledgeable posters stay mostly away. They are smart enough to see that their good points would just get lost amongst the hyperbolic bloviations of a few loud, obnoxious posters. Yes, its subjective. No, we aren't becoming WSI. But we pretty much all know what Jason is getting at here. And if you are one of the few who don't, well...

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 03:05 PM) What??????? QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) I agree with milkman. It was overrated. Scorsese received the Oscar as a makeup for the previous snubs. Definitely not one of his best films. I'm that group too. Way overrated, it was an OK movie. But I also tend to not like Scorsese's movies much either, I think he's a decent director at best. Never understood all the love.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) It's funny, but the guy's a beat writer who interacts with these guys everyday. You'd think he would be hated in the clubhouse. I'd guess he is, for a lot of the players. I've heard that to be the case for multiple players, not sure about the WHOLE clubhouse. Cowley is a hack, not a journalist. He's trying to be a screaching columnist a la Mariotti, not a real beat writer.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 03:42 PM) That would be me (waits for Shack to accuse me once again for making everything about myself). But I'm confident on this one. And it couldn't be further from the truth. Before me there was Brandofan, Poppy Hildago, Santo Dorf. Who was the poster that would rack up, like, 50 posts a day? I totally forgot his name. He'd have easily 100K+ posts by now had he not gotten banned. The stats posted were about game threads. Overall on PHT, you are the easy owner of being the most reliably, hyperbolically negative poster here, of anyone who posts with any frequency. Why do you think people react to you the way they do?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 01:26 PM) Staggering and pervasive ignorance of what's actually in the federal budget may be why a majority of Americans think we can slice and dice our way out of problems. That's depressing.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 12:34 PM) In hindsight I can see why NSS has the complaints he does, but while watching it, none of those issues bothered me. I think the key thing in making that happen was that the major guys were very good at their parts. I thought Magneto was well-cast and well-played, but I found virtually all of the rest of them irritating and shallow.

I guess so, most of the reviews were quite good. Not the first time my movie tastes varied from most people.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 11:29 AM) Yes, there are several year-round creeks and ponds in the area. There is one 2 acre parcel that actually has one running through it. $100k right now. As for the lot sizes, it's really interesting, because the subdivision is all in raw desert landscaping, so it is difficult to see where one person's land ends and another's begins. There are very few fenced properties. I asked if I were to allow my dog off leash if someone would take offense to him if he were to wander in to someone else's yard, and the realtor laughed at me. Said dogs are not an issue, that the wild horses come down into peoples' yards and no one even blinks an eye, so certainly no one cares about your dog (as long as he isn't aggressive or anything). The place honestly sounds like it's right out of Budweiser commercial in the winter. You probably already know this, especially if you spend time in the backcountry with your dog... but if you live in a place where wild animals frequently visit, and you don't have fences, you need to keep careful track of your dog. Especially at night. Getting into a tangle with a coyote, or mountain lion, or even a horse, could end badly for the dog.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 10:23 AM) So because they were antsy (and had already left Peavy in one batter too long in your own opinion), they were definitely going to pull him at that very moment and it's ridiculous to not be 100% sure about that? It was obvious they were going to get him. Not sure what else to tell you. I mean, maybe instead he was planning on going out to talk to the third base coach just for giggles, but he was immediately up and going to the stairs.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 10:01 AM) Again, it's ridiculous of anyone to state this as fact. Both of these sentences are flawed. There have been plenty of times where "everyone" knew that a pitcher ran out of gas, but he was left in by the manager. There have been plenty of times where people were sure that a pitcher had to be coming out of the game, but he did not. Not ridiculous at all. I was there. As soon as that last hit occurred, Ozzie and Coop were moving in the dugout and were obviously going to take him out (in fact you could tell they were getting antsy before then). We all looked down there because we had wanted him out a batter earlier, and wanted to see if they were moving. They were. AJ acted like an ass here, he did something you just don't do. How anyone could defend AJ in this is beyond me, and I'm a pretty big AJ fan. That all said, its not a huge deal. AJ acted like a child, Peavy let him know about it, they argued it out, they moved on.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 10:12 AM) Well there are subdivided plots and then there is acreage for sale. The subdivided plots are generally between a half-acre and three-quarter acres. Them the larger parcels, which are outside the subdivision, are more like 2 acre parcels. The reason for the smaller parcels is because this is all located right up next to the Toiyabe National Forest lands, which is some 6.3 million acres. The one property I looked at actually backs up right into the National Forest land. For me, I don't really care about the acreage much since I can just access the National Forest lands if I want to hike or camp or whatever. It's about 25 miles northwest of the edge of northwest Vegas, about 45 miles from central Las Vegas. OK. Backing on USFS land is really, really nice. Our property is about half a mile from a wilderness area with some trails. Having the larger acreage is all a matter of taste of course, half an acre is still plenty of room for a nice home and not being on top of your neighbors. So... is there actually a cold creek in cold creek?

QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 08:33 PM) X-men really was awesome. Shows Hollywood how to do a prequel. Ugh, why? The dialogue was about as clunky and predictable as I could imagine, and the characters were, for the most part, thoroughly uninteresting.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 07:12 AM) Still have no power from Tuesday's storm. Where you at ComEd? Same here. Fridge and freezer contents will now be toast. Sent the wife and daughter to stay with family. Took a very cold shower this morning. Only good thing was it was a relatively cool night, pleasant with the windows open. Supposed to be working from home, but that obviously isn't going to happen, so I'm downtown. We spent about 20 minutes that night in the basement with the tornado sirens going off. After all that and putting the kid back in bed, I wandered the neighborhood with the locals, clearing debris from the streets, checking on people, etc. Crazy big trees and limbs down, a few houses damaged. I think the small tornado that hit Mt Prospect was the same cell that blew through our area shortly after. Worst part, I think we're going to be one of the ones that takes days to fix, even from now. A huge tree came down and took out the line about 100 feet from our property, but the downed line and tree are in a creek bed that's hard to get to. And the power pole in our back corner that feeds out house is now bent at a disturbing angle under the weight, so its possible they have to replace our pole - which is not accessible from a driveway or alley. This might turn out to be ugly. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 07:51 AM) Call them. Repeatedly. When I originally called ours in Tuesday night, ComEd was so busy I couldn't even get an open circuit to call them. Not just unable to get a person, or get into their system... couldn't even get a circuit in. Finally got into their automated system like an hour into trying. Still have two full blocks out in our neighborhood.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:57 PM) Went out to Cold Creek this morning. What an incredible area...200 residents, 1/3 of which are full-time. Gorgeous setting. Looked at a home that has a complete solar setup already with batteries and a generator. On a half acre of land, but right up next to a National Forest Preserve. Wild horses and elk walk into the neighborhood in the winter. Time to get the bank on the phone... Half acre? That's really not very big for BFE land, a typical house lot in the far flung suburbs in Chicago is bigger than that. How far out from contiguous urbanity is the property?

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:25 AM) Drafted last year....Anyone know why he did not play in 2010? Still only 19. He did play in 2010.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 08:58 AM) You won't see that reflected at the pumps for a while, but the prices should be falling anyways as prices have been on a pretty steady decline for the few weeks anyway. I saw $3.55 when I left this morning. I haven't seen a price that low in a while. Still around $3.90-ish in my area.

QUOTE (gfbaseball @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 07:25 AM) Another win for the Voyagers last night in Billings. A great potentially game saving catch in the 9th by Mark Haddow bouncing off the wall. Offensive star from last night was Jeffer Patino who when 2 for 5 with a double and a home run adding 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. He's also gotten two hits each game so far riding a three game hit streak to start the season. Voyagers added two more home runs last night one each by Patino and Pagalinan. Qualon Millender also got a hit extending his hit streak to 3 games to start the season. The pitcher of the night was starter Jarrett Casey who got the win going six innings giving up one unearned run on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts. Bachanov struggled in the 9th giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with BB and no strikeouts and was probably bailed on the loss by Haddow's game ending catch. Thanks for the write-up! Box Score, GF wins 7-5.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) What if we stay as is for the next 5-10 years? Depends on what you mean by as-is. Current state for 5-10 years would suck, but its still very survivable, nationally and globally. If you mean things get worse and worse for 5-10 years, that's different.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:45 PM) If the world economy is stagnant for the next 30 years, I'd venture that most existing governments would become irrelevant. That's why I said "irrelevant". Its like people who are hoarding gold, or people trading buy-protection on US treasury debt... what's your end game? If your feared scenario happens, your holdings are all worthless anyway. Not to mention that such a scenario just seems so very unlikely to me. On the highest, simplest level, this recession seems to me, to be about early immaturity of a global economy and its realities. Global financial adolescence run amok.

QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) Quentin - Milledge - Viciedo Ah, one can dream.... May not be pretty defensively, but an offensive upgrade for sure... You would seriously take Milledge over Rios? I mean come on, this reactionary stuff is getting ridiculous. Milledge has shown he's marginal at the major league level even as a part time player, his D was bad even on the corners, and the defense in that OF with him in CF would be atrocious.

Dunn last 7 games : .158/.304/.368/.672
NorthSideSox72 replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I find it incredibly unlikely that a guy who has been so good, consistently, for so long, having dropped off a cliff, will not find his way back. Its just a matter of when, and damn I hope its soon. This team is a hot week away from being right at the top of the division, and having old school Dunn to go with TCQ and PK14 would go a long way towards that. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:33 PM) If we'll never get the economy back to 2007 levels there's absolutely no reason to be concerned about pensions being underfunded in the future. Yeah, I was going to say something like that. We've had lots of panic moments in our economic history, some stronger than others, but this country always found a way to claw back into things. I am pretty confident that will be the case here as well. And on the very slim chance it doesn't, and we descend into some sort of economic death spiral, then those pensions will either be irrelevant or will be just dropped a la bankruptcy dropping of debt.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) Another depressing study on pension deficits: http://www.cnbc.com/id/43498037 I would love to see all government agencies get out of the pension business entirely. The problem is, just like social security, there are only two ways to unwind from a pyramid scheme: drop benefits to recipients by some amount, and/or increase pay-ins in the short run to move into a phase-out. And no one wants to touch that political hot potato.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 03:46 PM) But he's not productive...so that fact doesn't matter. We aren't talking about Adam Dunn from 2004 to 2010. We are talking about the 2011 Adam Dunn who has no confidence, a poor swing and is just an awful batter right now. The past is the past, what's important is now. Just curious, do you think he's going to stay this way all season? Because I highly doubt it.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) That's kind of an offensive statement. Konerko is god right now. Period. This post is awesome.
