  1. QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) I have to say that KW was speaking that afternoon as if they were moving on, but I think just about everyone (even Cowley) knew there was always a slight chance something could still happen. If I'm not mistaken, Joe was on our station right after KW spoke and even said as much. Obviously later in the evening, things changed. I know that the Sox did, for a couple of hours at least, think they were going to have to go to plan B. And if he stated it as resonably and calmly as you just did, he'd be worth following. He didn't. He made it seem, at various points, 100% he's staying, then 100% he's not, then 100% he was. He was no better than the lunacy you see on this board every day, and he should be held to a higher standard, IMO, because this is his job.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) So far, the individual mandate has gone before 3 judges. 2 of them appointed by Democrats, 1 appointed by W. Care to guess which one was the one to rule against it? I really don't care, honestly. This by the way is why Judge's should not be an elected office, nor should they be elected as part of a political party (if they have to be elected at all).
  3. QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) Define "failure". You may not like his personality, but he's on top of everything. What you have to understand is that offseason stuff is constantly fluid, even for those that are actually involved in getting deals done. They may think they have something one minute, only for it to fall apart the next. This entire post proves that your perception is off. Cowley is anything but a homer. Do you even read what he's written this offseason or see any of his tweets. He's been quite direct in regard to KW and has, a few times, taken a couple of stabs. Or at least it appears that way. And, with all due respect to Hawk, we are not even close to being the same and our jobs are not the same. If you think that, you clearly don't know what you're talking about and you certainly don't understand what a "homer" is. You've apparently failed to notice the number of times I've criticized the team. Then again, I'm fighting a losing battle, I see. Some people will always hear what they want to hear. Just to clarify, I think J4L was talking about Scott Merkin there, not Cowley. Merkin is indeed a homer, because that's of course his job - he writes for MLB and represents the team's interests (if indirectly). I don't think anyone is of the view that Cowley is a homer. And on the fluidity argument, that is exactly why Cowley is such garbage. His writing, tweets and other data he flings around speak in only two forms - sarcasm and absolutism. If he took out the 12-year-old act sarcasm crap, and made his material less absolute (PK has sailed!!!!!!), he'd at least have a chance to be marginally believable. As it stands, he's not a journalist at all, he's a screaming columnist, a la Jay Mariotti.
  4. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 09:38 PM) Dear God, Iowa is an AWFUL second half team. I loooooove Scott Christopherson. Drops 30, 24 in the second half. Bet Tom Crean would have liked him to follow to Indiana. Big road win for Iowa State, I know Iowa is awful, but a big win for a team so young. ISU at 9-2 right now. UNI was a game they should have won. Their remaining schedule OOC is... vs Dartmouth vs Chicago State @ Virginia vs NIU They should really win 3 of those without question, leaving UVA as the question mark. Even if they lose that one, then they go into the 16 game Big 12 schedule with a 12-3 mark. If they can actually beat UVA, which is a long shot, that's 13-2 OOC. In conference they get to play Nebraska and Colorado twice each so that's nice, but they also have to play KU, KSU and Mizzou twice each. And they play the south dvision once each. 20-11 in the Big 12 gets you an NCAA bid every year, 19-12 puts you on the bubble, 18-13 or 17-14 probably means NIT. so if ISU can pull off a .500 record in the in-conference season, or even maybe 7-9, they should go to the tourney. If they can do that, considering how poorly most people thought the team would do based on talent, I'd say that's a big win for Freddy and the Cyclones in getting back the strength of their program. ETA: They need to get some bigger OOC names on their schedule the next couple years. The only teams they played that weren't complete garbage are Iowa (who is close), Creighton, Cal and Virginia. Maybe UNI. They need 1-2 more good teams in there, at least.
  5. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) Federal Judge In Va. Rules Part Of Health Care Law Unconstitutional Ah, so its the individual mandate. That makes sense, and its one of the reasons this bill was poorly structured.
  6. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 11:27 AM) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101213/ap_on_...erhaul_virginia I'll be curious to see what part of it was ruled unconstitutional.
  7. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 11:25 AM) Yeah why would you want to fix crumbling roads and bridges when you can build an inefficient, over budget, highly subsidized, not for profit rail system? Seems like a good expenditure of capital to me. First of all, that isn't the equation here for the governor of WI. His equation is either he gets the rail stuff, with all the jobs and business that go with it... or he gets nothing. That's the way the money was allocated at the federal level. Second, I LOL when people refer to "heavily subsidized" rail. Rail is heavily subsidized, but roads are COMPLETELY subsidized. Now, the NJ governor's decision, at least makes some kind of sense. His state was on the hook for a known few billion dollars, as well as any overruns which also may be billions. So in his case, there is a real decision to make when it comes to best use of funds. But Wisconsin was getting a full federal funding for this project, a billion dollar's worth resulting in many jobs and other positive financial effects... in exchange for a couple million a year going forward. The decision there that he made is idiotic and 100% political to make a point.
  8. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 10:25 AM) I wonder what's going to happen with the 3 billion in matching funds the Federal Government made available for NJ to build the ARC tunnel that our GOP Governor killed. I thought NY and NYC were thinking of trying to do the project themselves.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 08:47 AM) I wouldnt even say that. His ERA was around 4.30. In the AL, as a back of the rotation starter that is fine. He is not and never has been an ace. He isnt worth his contract on the open market. But to me he is still a good pitcher and is probably more valuable than what we could hope to get in return from a trade. And a trade as a salar dump would be a PR nightmare 4.30 ERA from a starter in the AL is better than back of the rotation (which I take to mean #5), its more like #3. And in his better years, he is a solid #2. I do agree though that trading him for even value is dicey because of the PR issue - they'd need to get a package more than he's worth, which is unlikely to occur.
  10. QUOTE (since56 @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 08:38 AM) We all love Buerhle. Great career,(possible hof?),world series..............but we all know he ain't what he used to be. So does everyone else. Who will give us anyting but garbage for him and his contract. Trade Buerhle for garbage and ticket sales and over all revenue will go down more than his $14 Mill. Make him the number 4 or 5 starter or maybe a bullpen guy if he falters early, but keep him for a another run at it. I'm not sure we all know he ain't what he used to be. For the three seasons 2007-2009, MB put up numbers pretty much in line with his career averages, with ERA's in the mid-upper 3's, similar WHIP and other values. 2010 was a bad year, just as 2006 was, but not AS bad as 2006. To me, there is every indication that 2010 was just an aberrant season. Can't say for sure of course, its POSSIBLE that 2010 was the beginning a slide down. But looking at his career and his age, I'd say that's not likely. His contract is no bargain, but as others have pointed out, he has met the value of the contract so far with his performance. So I am not sure how or why people are 100% convinced that his contract is some sort of albatross.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 08:18 AM) California owes wisconsin a thank you note. Link Illinois also got a chunk of that money, and so did some other states, though CA got the biggest piece. And the IL legislature is looking at a package to woo that rail company to move to Illinois instead of Wisconsin, since Illinois is continuing to do the rail projects and is so near where the current facility is. Not a good start for the new governor of WI - throwing away thousands of jobs and unknown increased tourism dollars to save $2M a year.
  12. QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) one year 1.5 million If Freddy can be had for that, then go get him right now, and use an existing SP to free up money for the pen and possibly RF if TCQ is traded.
  13. Downtown on a Friday night should work for me, unless that turns into the Friday when I have to move to the new house. Also, for those who work downtown and want to start at like 5pm instead of 7pm, we can get things started. Either location is fine for me. I've met probably 8-10 people from here before - some at the softball games, others have bought game tix from me before. Most are cool, except Jeff/SHIPPS/IceCreamPants who is a jackass ( ). Also, Marko/BS is surprisingly tall, I think he's even taller than I am, so he should be easy to spot in the bar.
  14. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) Maybe this debate is for another thread, but who is the starting 3b next year, Vizquel, Teahan, or Morel? All indications so far are that it's Morel's job to lose. The org like him a lot.
  15. Buddy of mine was one of the sound guys for the first two Transformers movies, I assume he's on this one too but haven't asked yet. He developed some of the robotic sounds, and he's the voices on the radio in the car in the first movie (which was not supposed to happen, he's not a SAG actor, but they needed the patch last minute so he did it himself).
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 01:37 AM) I'll check and ask my friend what exactly he means. This is not a slam but a serious question. Is Obama our worst president in the last 70 years? 1. Too early to say how good or bad he is in any case, the guy's not even been Prez for 2 years yet. Usually can't really see them in good, full perspective relative to others until after they leave office. 2. So far, I'm not overly happy with him, but so far he's an improvement over the last guy (which isn't much of a hurdle). Perceptions of Presidents change with time. For example, in terms of Presidents I actually remember... My opinions of Reagan and Bush 43 have gone downhill oveafter their departures, while my opinions of Clinton and Bush 41 have gotten better. Carter, pretty much the same at this point - good man, lousy President.
  17. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 06:41 PM) Bernie Sanders is a principled man. Not sure if this was sarcastic, but, I actually agree with it. I've always like the guy.
  18. I'm guessing KW is going to try to engineer a move to trade Teahen in the same way he did Linebrink, eat some salary but save a few million... then trade prospects to get one high end reliever. That would leave just one pen slot open (assuming that its the traded player plus Thornton, Sale, Santos, Pena and Infante), for a long man, and they can simply use one of their AAA starters that aren't really major league starting material for that mop-up duty. If he can't move Teahen, he'll still probably trade prospects for a reliever, but he won't be able to get one with as high a salary.
  19. Quentin should bring back a very good reliever plus something, I'd think. But that would still leave RF open. I have to assume that if the Sox trade Quentin for relief help, that means they are also looking for RF help elsewhere.
  20. Mitchell played in the AFL, which is really all most people wanted to see. His numbers were less than spectacular though. Here is his profile on FutureSox.com
