  1. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:31 AM) I have a question about the UE at 17%. I'll take live examples of my family and I'm curious who would count in the 17% number. - My grandmother in a nursing home - My father who retired from AA and is on a pension - My mother who swears she wants a job (but doesn't really try) and tutors kids on the side for cash - My brother-in-law who went back to school for his college degree after being a minor league baseball player - My wife's aunt/uncle, who works part time as a school cafeteria worker and bus driver (who dont want to work more hours or they'll fall off unemployment benefits) Who counts and who doesn't? Its all a little fuzzy to me, but here are my best guesses from what I know: --Grandmother is considered retired, so she's not in the calculated population --Same with father --Mother falls into total UE, but maybe not reported UE (the 10.2% number), depending on various things --Not sure on the brother-in-law - if he's a full time student, probably isn't in the population pool for either calculation --Last one, no idea
  2. I am on Verizon, and I am mostly happy with it in terms of the coverage. Very good on that, and I do go to a lot of places where phone service is often iffy. But Verizon pulled a s***ty, s***ty thing on their blackberries. If you get a BB from Verizon, you can either pay $10 a month to use the Verizon GPS/mapping software, or you can download Google Maps/Google Earth for free. Well, duh, I went Google. Except Verizon has code put into the RIM OS (other providers do NOT do this) that prevents the GPS from working with any other software other than VZW maps. Total f***ing rip-off.
  3. As expected, we went over the magic line. 10.2%. Total UE including underemployed and not looking for work is at 17%. Bad bits: Big rise in people out of work more than 6 months (record), 22nd straight month of shedding jobs (record), average work week stable (bad because no more hours being put on for existing employees, which is a growth indicator). Good bits: Number of jobs lost fell again and has done so for a few months, and temp jobs jumped (temp jobs usually come before FT jobs) My additional take: We need small business to get this thing going. We need to put them in a better position to get credit in loans, but tax credits in targeted industries or even blanket ones would also help.
  4. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:32 PM) A test of what? Your hypothesis there is either terribly written, inherently incoherent or, by the looks of it, both. I dont understand at all. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) you say that a lot, don't you. Both of you quit it. Any more posts like this will result in suspensions.
  5. QUOTE (qwerty @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:54 AM) For what it is worth i highly dislike this unconfirmed trade, as it hinders us rather than benefits us, is multiple ways. I thought it was pretty decent at first, though I am thinking more and more its not that great. But I don't think it hinders or hurts the team. I think its a deal that leaves a lot of flexibility for the club in who they acquire, so its not boxing the team into a corner. I am thinking now that Teahen is basically insurance. Wherever they end up NOT filling a gap (2B, 3B, OF), he could play there, if things don't work out just right for KW in the offseason. If things DO work out just right, Teahen is a nice backup/lefty bat at nearly every position on the field (though he doesn't play defense at any of them very well). I think this deal indicates that Kenny is looking at doing a LOT of moves. Just my feeling about it.
  6. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 07:31 PM) Teahen plays 1st? Get a new RF and 3b or 2B? Teahen starting at first? No thank you.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 07:26 PM) Phil Rogers is commenting that the deal allows the Sox to potentially explore a Konerko trade, which would than free up payroll to make a FA splash. An unnamed scout is indicating that the Sox are likely going to get cash. I am not surprised with the PK trade talk, but, I fail to see what it has to do with this trade.
  8. Rasner appears to be just not up to this level of play, at least not yet. Cassel went from taking the Southern League ERA crown in 2008, to basically looking like he has no future at all in 2009.
  9. Let's see if its possible to keep this thread from going into the gutter and being closed. Please?
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:37 PM) [/b] Yes. Who steals a base? Who leads off? Who cares, and, who cares? I like a good baserunner too, but its a lesser concern to other factors.
  11. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:30 PM) "Versatile defender" should only apply to players that can actually defend multiple positions relatively well. And if he is going to be penciled in at 2B like the original poster suggested then they're once again ignoring defense. That is my biggest concern with this as well - defense. Getz looked pretty good to me at 2B, not spectacular, but decent and a rookie. Teahen likely would be worse, probably significantly, and he'd have to work well with an erratic and defensively underachieving Ramirez.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) At least we're one step closer to improving our double play combo, which I still believe cost us 5-7 games due to inability to turn crucial double plays. You lost me here. Who are you saying was the problem there, and who do you think will be at what positions now?
  13. I hate all the leadoff hitter talk. Leadoff hitters hit once a game, for one thing. For another thing, OBP trumps speed, you don't HAVE to have a speedster at the top. And most importantly, its just not smart to acquire players based on hitting slot specifically, because you essentially corner yourself in the market and limit your possibilities. This is the same in any line of business. You don't go recruit people that are ideal for a fourth of their job, you recruit people that are best overall for the WHOLE job. You assemble the best 9 guys you can, then make the lineup from there.
  14. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 11:59 AM) I think you have a great potential career as an agent for marginally talented players. I thought that was my job! /Ross Gload / Ehren Wassermann fan
  15. The overreactions in here are hilarious. 100 losses? Kotsay to DH full time? Seriously? And I am thinking more and more that Plan A is for Teahen to play 2B, with the Sox acquiring an OF. side note: If Getz still hasn't been told about the trade, after the story came out, that's pretty s***ty treatment. Not real happy with that.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:26 AM) Pff, Retherford has Danny Richar written all over him. You can all slob him and say he's the next great thing, and I'll sit here and tell you that just breaking out at 24 in a fall league is a sign that he's getting lucky and he will suck. Then he'll hit .200 or so and look like crap but people will still refuse to believe. Then he will finally, a year later, be given away and fade to no man's land. Go look at what he's done so far. He isn't "just breaking out" in the fall league - he has raked at every level. That is no guarantee of course, but... 46 doubles in AA, to lead all of minor league baseball? That is a lot more than luck.
  17. Other sites like ESPN and Sporting News are reporting this now, but citing NY Daily.
  18. I really think Teahan is on the infield somewhere in 2010. Probably 3B. I think we're going to acquire a new OF.
  19. This is a nice flexible move. They can now acquire either a 2B or an RF, and make this work in either case, since Teahan can play corner OF or 3B or 2B. I think I like it, although it all depends on moves following. And I'll miss Getz.
  20. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:14 AM) Trib "In a dramatic turn of events, a Cook County Circuit Court judge halted Illinois' parental notification law on abortion just hours after a state agency gave it the all-clear. Judge Daniel Riley granted a temporary restraining order sought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois in the late afternoon, hours after Illinois' medical disciplinary board decided the state could begin enforcing the law. It requires physicians to notify parents or guardians when those 17 or younger seek abortions. Unbelievable. Its a temporary order for review. Let's not get over excited here. You had to figure this would happen.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) Don't ever get a masters in accounting, unless you are a tax professional and in which case a masters in tax can be very valuable. For all other purposes, most worthless masters you could possibly get. I said a masters in FINANCE, which will often involve working in accounting, but still give you flexibility. Not a masters IN accounting, which I agree is too narrow.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) Are there other ways of re-booting a computer in safe mode? My computer apparently got jacked up by a couple of Trojans and a Packed.Generic (no idea which one), and it would be relatively simple to get it into a legitimate working order again, except that I literally cannot get my msconfig.exe to open up. I've tried a couple different routes to try and get there, and still have struggled. Still running Microsoft XP, and I'm thinking it's about time a new computer finds its way into my life. There should be a point during startup where it allows you to hit a function key which gets you into safe mode. It may only flash on the screen briefly. It is often F1, F12 or F14, but it isn't consistent. Try to find which it is for your computer, and hit that repeatedly during startup if you cannot see the right "moment" to do so. Also, did you try running the exe from a CMD window?
  23. Shut up, Barney, you shouldn't even attempt to use words like "clearable" when you obviously don't know what that means. I am all for getting swaps clearing houses set up, and setting capital requirement and reporting/audit rules in such a way as to make non-cleared swaps much more expensive. But trying to have the CFTC determine "which swaps" are "clearable" is an impossible task, since swaps by nature are one-off OTC contracts that can all be different from each other. These are not listed instruments.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 02:09 PM) The people with the most power in california benefit when nothing changes and the government keeps screwing over the other 99% of its citizens. I know you guys, on both sides, like to think that every single politician and publci servant is evil and only concerned with maintaining the status quo... but that's not the case. And further, even if it was, this STILL makes no sense, because this kind of move is what gets people voted out of office. Your paranoia is overriding your sense of logic.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) No one is. My point was one stupid slogan for another that are both ridiculous. And it creates a lot of false images on both counts. No more, no less... With that said, NSS's post does push me to say that Obama really doesn't give a damn about the private sector jobs creation. Health care and cap and trade are much more important. That doesn't really make any sense. Even if you believe Obama wants the government to do everything (which I don't agree with), it still makes no sense for him to NOT want jobs created wherever he can get them. Economy is everything in politics, and his second term hangs in the balance.
