QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) That's the 2nd time I've seen someone mention carrying 3 catchers? Why?...makes absolutley no sense to me. Some people think that if Flowers spends time at DH, we need a 3rd catcher, because if Flowers has to move to C because AJ is hurt or something, you lose the DH. I personally think the risk is incredibly low, and at worst, you have a few AB's in a season where you'd get hit. Not worth the offset of a roster spot if you ask me.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) But would ya'll consider those sites mentioned religious, as well? I mean, it is a crucifix. The things you have all mentioned that have been there prior to being a nat'l monument are not necessarily a religious object. Although the Native American relics can be and probably should be considered religious. I really don't have a side in this debate. I'd call many of the artifacts you'd find in various archaeological sites religious in nature.

Love the Morel report - hard to find a weakness in it. -
QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) Chinese press alleges an all female lesbian city in Sweden. Is this the same paper that plagiarized the Onion article where Congress requested a retractable roof chamber, as fact?

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:13 PM) I'm not trying to be a jerk, but could you give me an example? Well first, any battlefield monument at all, would by nature have items left behind that don't belong there. Also, AmerInd sites or pre-historic arcaheological sites, a lot of the stuff there is stolen from someone. For a more recent example, a lot of historical sites were essentially graffitied or degraded after the fact but before it was a monument or park. I was in Chaco Culture NHP a couple years ago, and any number of historical figures and just plain people had scribbled their own stuff on the same walls with the petroglyphs.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) The kicker, though, is that this was built without the ok from the previous owner. So what, exactly, makes it historically significant? Just because of the length of time it's been there? Look at other historical sites - was everything there, placed there legally at that time? I'm betting not. That's pretty irrelevant to me, in this case. If it were still private property, or if it was placed there after the transfer, then yeah, take it down.

2010 Offseason Fantasy Lineup Thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to son of a rude's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't even think we need a bunch of trades or big moves. I'd like to see the Sox try to acquire an LH hitting OF/DH, and have Flowers be at DH, and also back up C. Abreu would be perfect, but others may work too. Abreu can be DH the majority of the time, OF at times. I am willing to take a shot at Pods again in LF as a starter - just want him to take it back a notch on stealing attempts and be more selective at that. if Pods gets hurt, Abreu moves full time to the OF, and Flowers can DH. If all you do is pick up Abreu, just with that one move, you can have an offense that looks like this: Pods, LF Beckham, 3B Abreu, DH Konerko, 1B Quentin, RF Pierzynski, C Rios, CF Ramirez, SS Getz, 2B Bench of... Flowers (C, DH) Nix (IF) Kotsay (OF, 1B) ??? preferably LH (IF) I honestly think that's a pretty darn good lineup. The only slots in that lineup that concern me are Pods' health (and I noted above the backup plan), and Getz' bat. So I'd be open to a pickup for 2B as well, if the opportunity presents itself. Getz would then be the bench LF IF and PR/PH type guy. So, for those in the know... who are the available FA's this offseason for OF/DH (with power) and 2B, both preferably LH? -
QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) While it probably was not intended, the irreverent comment does lead to something. If you do not believe, than this simply is two sticks forming something akin to a trail marker. Presumably, if you are a believer, it means something more. Can't both people simply look upon this for what they believe and allow the other to exist? I walk path various symbols of other religions, civil groups, societies, etc and do not feel offended or threatened. I don't think its about believing, or not believing, at all. Its about history, and respect. The National Park Service has a duty to, among other things, protect historically significant artifacts within their jurisdiction. This, to me, clearly fits into it.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) yeah yeah war on christians etc...blah blah But seriously you'd think after 200 years Texans would be better at picking their battles. Someone could trip over that and break it. It looks more like a trail marker. War on Christians? I guess you really did miss the point. Who cares how big/cool/shiny the monument is?

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) I'm pretty sure I've made better monuments in elementary school for the christmas tree. I thought you were being sarcastic with your first comment, but now I'm not sure. Are you really this flippant, and do you really miss the point this badly?

I also hope they replace her, I really liked having a real organist at the games, instead of purely canned stuff. I think I am going to write to Brooks on this.

Minor League Catch-All thread 2009 edition

QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) Somewhat old news, but MLB is making a junior AFL type league. Sounds like it will happen in 2010 if they can finalize the details in time. This year 8 teams have put together an informal version, the White Sox are one. Here is a video explaining the situation. I can't watch the video here... what Sox prospects are in it? -

This is a corner case. A memorial built on private land, then bought by the NPS. To me, personally, its part of history. The NPS should be looking to protect it just like ruins or artifacts, as previously stated. So leave it, and no, you can't build a bunch of other memorials here, because NOW its a national park IN SITU.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) One thing we seem to have an abundance of is intriguing RP prospects. For our minor league gurus, who's the closest to the show at this point? Adding to what others have said, when we are talking about guys in A ball, its very hard to say. You have to look less at core results like ERA and WHIP, and more at peripherals like K and BB rate, GB and FB rates, and of course scouting reports on their stuff. Results become more important at the higher levels. If you look at the Kanny staff, lots of guys look like they have some potential, but we'll know a lot more once they reach AA.

Miguel Cabrera got drunk with Sox players Friday night?

QUOTE (rockren @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) My guess is that it wasn't a BAC...but a PBT (Preliminary Breath Test). I assumed they mean breathalyzer, not BAC (people get those terms confused - I glanced right over it and didn't even notice). -

QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 01:35 PM) Didn't know they did a BAC for a domestic call?...which the rumor of DUI would make more sense. BAC might be done if he was arrested - its not just used for vehicular issues (though that is the most common). But the articles say there was no arrest. Sorta weird, if there was no arrest, and no driving, if they did that. New to me. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) Lucifer's Hammer influenced Deep Impact? This is a joke, right? That movie was nowhere near the book. Both movies pulled from multiple different sci-fi books of the same theme. Not sure which did which. Forget the tech and methodology. Point is, the theme has been done, and done badly, so no one wants to touch it. At least for now. But you never know.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 5, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) Another interesting look at the "Wall street, cancer on America's economy" setup that we keep seeing. In this case, a profitable company is bought, restructured, debt is added, the people who did the restructuring walk out with a lot of money, and then leave someone else holding the bag for all the debt that is added. Ideally, isn't this the sort of thing that capitalism is supposed to avoid? If all that a company is doing is extracting value for itself while hurting everyone else, and it is able to be successful doing that, then there's something fundamentally wrong with the system itself. This sort of thing is not at all new, its been going on for decades. It even happened to a company I worked for, for a long time. And its not anti-capitalism at all. It even has some positive side effects in some cases. Sucks to be at a company that is the target of a leveraged buy-out, though, I can tell you.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Thought ZOmbieLand was entertaining. With 2012 coming out and will obviously be awful, why don't they adapt "Lucifer's Hammer" to a movie. That's a great scifi book and if in the right hands could be a good film...as long and Emmerich and Bay stay away. Lucifer's Hammer, also The Hammer of God, were sci-fi books that were loose influences on the pair of awful, awful, awful comet movies that came out some years ago - Armageddon and Deep Impact. Probably, people have decided to stay away from that mini-genre now because they are still trying to wash that taste out of their mouths.

QUOTE (striker62704 @ Oct 4, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) Awesome write up NSS. I'm wondering why the Sox didn't move Remenowsky up as fast as they moved Hudson. Well, Hudson and Remenowsky are not the same thing, really. I would not have expected them to promote Remenowsky that fast, though I was a bit surprised he didn't see W-S. Hard to see anything they might have him working on. My only thought is, they want to keep him in a closer role, and that slot may not have been open at W-S with Nathan Jones up there.
