  1. mlb.com reporting that Jose was removed after 3 IP with an injury - no other info yet.
  2. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) The question is whether his race being polarized will cause more people to come out to vote. Generally in politics this is rarely the case, but there are exceptions. Partially. The other question is, where do the swing votes go? It doesn't matter what the wing nuts think, they will vote for their wing in any case. Its the ones in the middle that make the difference. So any time a candidate is shown doing something stupid, that is coming from one far extreme or the other (and this was pretty out there), it will only hurt them. Now, if he was in a solidly red district and won 70% of the vote previously, then it wouldn't change anything enough to matter. But in a tight race? It matters plenty. People in that district are now ashamed of their representative blundering on the national stage. Some will care, and some will make a shift, but it won't be the lefties or righties.
  3. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) Like having mainframe programmer (which is what I am) as the title and then in the description they are really looking for a web programmer. Those aren't mutually exclusive. I've seen Websphere used to put up web fronts and API's for web services attached to mainframe or midrange apps.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 03:08 PM) I'm sure it's going the other way around too. I can't see Wilson's losing anything other than democratic friends for this one. When you only get 53%, you need some friends from the other party, and some independents, so losing them is pretty key.
  5. Southern League Round 1... Game 1: Jacksonville @ Birmingham, 7:05pm CT, Ely starting Carolina League Round 1... Game 2: Salem (Kyle Weiland) @ Winston-Salem (A. Carter), 6:05pm CT Sally Round 1... Kanny plays again tomorrow night. Pioneer League still in regular season... Billings @ Great Falls, 8:00pm CT, Jimmy Ballinger starts for GF
  6. QUOTE (T R U @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) lolz who cares.. you care wayyy too much about minor league baseball Sez the guy posting in the minor league playoffs thread.
  7. QUOTE (jamesdiego @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) As previously stated, I believe his suckiness has to do with the uncertainty of his future with the Sox, ala '07. I think it's time to move on. Lets say we sign him for another year, does pretty good in the first half of 2010. Then falls apart again in the second half all worried about his future with the Sox. I think it's more mental. I do agree that part of it is probably mental. At least part, maybe most or all.
  8. There won't be illegals in the future? You really think any Administration is going to simply throw open the doors and say anyone can come on in? No way that happens.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) QUIT FOCUSING ON JUST THE COUNCELING. In case you missed it twice, I also said "but there will still be a panel of bureaucrats somewhere deciding just what kind of care and how much of it you get. And if they deny you something that could have saved your life, you have a defacto death panel". No matter how you want to try and spin it, there will be a groupof people somewhere in this system looking at all the healthcare you get, and deciding if you should still get it. There will be limits on the amount of drugs you can get because they cost too damn much, or you are too damn old. And while you can say "but it isn't in the bill" you also can't say there are any mechanisms to prevent it. Once the system becomes overburdened, rationing will occur, decisions will be made, and lives will be effected. At least in hr3200, there are sections that give the health czar and insurance commissioner very wide latitude as to what they can impose, without having to go thru congress and make actual laws for people to vote on. Too much room for potential abuse, regrdless of who is there. I was focusing on it because that is what it is. This phantom OTHER panel you talk about isn't mentioned anywhere I have seen in any bill. Also, as stated by others, insurance companies already do make triage-like decisions on care for the deathly ill. And as far as I can see, that isn't changing in any way.
  10. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:43 PM) It should lower costs, yes. But the people you describe isn't a large group. And, overall, people will go with who is close. I can't imagine a huge number of people in Illinois checking with companies in Mississippi, Idaho, Vermont, etc. It's just too much for one person to research. So, at the end of the day, they will probably go to who's closest. Which is fine - how does allowing them to go elsewhere do anything negative? It only adds positives.
  11. QUOTE (mreye @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) I'm alive! I think the concern is that there are not enough checks in the bill to stop illegals from accessing healthcare. They won't have it officially, but will easily gain access. That is enforcement, which is a different discussion. Congress cannot ENFORCE laws directly, they rely on agencies to do that for them. Once law is written, if people are breaking it or not following it, then enforcement action should be taken. This argument could literally be applied to any law on the books. Most of them do not go into detail on exactly how to enforce it - they might state specific penalties, but that is usually it. This whole argument is ridiculous, not because the fear is invalid (its very valid), but because its ire aimed at the wrong place.
  12. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) The end of life counselling sessions are just that, as you say. but there will still be a panel of bureaucrats somewhere deciding just what kind of care and how much of it you get. And if they deny you something that could have saved your life, you have a defacto death panel. Again, you are not focusing on the overall picture, and her true meaning and intent. Must be that R in her party affiliation that prevents that. LOL at the bolded. I've lined out my ideas for overhaul in this very forum, and it is a lot closer to the right than the left. Back to the topic, counseling does not mean dictating. If it did, why have the sessions? Its a chance for them to explore their options. To me, that is an improvement over the insurance companies deciding for you, as they do now in cooperation with your Doctor - would you not agree?
  13. Better than expected jobless claims, and better than expected imports. Its funny, the market feels its bought too far out into an assumed recovery, but the good news keeps coming, so we just continue to hover where we are. Sort of an odd place to be.
  14. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) The Republican answer was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. It made no sense and didn't explain anything. And I take umbrage with insurance across state lines. People may say they want that, but when it comes down to it, people want ease of use and proximity. Why do you think convenience stores are successful? They are called convenience stores for a reason. Again, my .02. Are you saying you don't like the idea of companies being able to go across state lines? Not sure what anyone's beef with that could be. At the very least it helps improve competition, and therefore, should lower costs. it also allows for better coverage for people who travel or who move for their jobs, or work remotely.
  15. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) If they have the power to determine whether or not you get a specific treatment or drug, do they not have that power, in a round about way? hence the hyperbole. hy⋅per⋅bo⋅le  /haɪˈpɜrbəli/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [hahy-pur-buh-lee] –noun Rhetoric. 1. obvious and intentional exaggeration. 2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.” If they did, then you could at least make the hyperbolic leap. But as they don't - they are counseling sessions - her statements are fully detached from reality.
  16. I'd just like to point out that if we gain one more game on DET in the next week, then we will be less than 6 games back, with 6 games remaining against them. Still a long shot, but, just saying, it means we control our own destiny. The fat lady is warming up back stage, but she ain't singin' yet.
  17. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:26 PM) So, on one hand it's no big deal what number Obama throws out for the uninsured, 20 mil, 50 mil, 100 mil, whatever. it is the general point that counts, the exact words don't matter. Yet, when palin comes out and metions 'death squads' in a speech, which was pure political hyperbole as can be, you all take those EXACT words and run as if it were gospel. The general point she was trying to get across was about the end of life counseling and rationing of care, but you guys seem to have blinderrs to that, the hyperbole makes a better headline for you all to scream. So, for Democrats, it is the true underlying meaning of what you intended to say, not the exact words that matter. With Republicans, if the word is in print, you can't acquit. GMAFB. As a side note, why is Obama so concerned with Palin? He seems to like referencing her alot. Not even remotely comparable. Palin is saying something that is just clearly false. The number of uninsured Americans seems to vary, depending on what source and what definition you use, from 20M to 50M or even higher. Both Obama's numbers are within that realm. Palin's comments are not within the realm of reality, since no such thing exists. Its not that she uses the phrase "death panels", its that she is perpetuating the myth that some bureaucrat will now have the power to decide your death.
  18. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) that means nothing if they don't ever check to see if the person is legal. why is this so hard for you to understand? if it was an oversight, then just make an update to the proposal, then that clears everything up. so calm down. What are you talking about? There is a clause leaving them out. That makes it law. That means they have to check. You are asking for something that is already there. Your request is akin to saying the law regarding murder should also have a clause stating "oh, and, if someone DOES murder someone else, make sure you arrest them".
  19. Time for Charlie's end of regular season update... Shirek weakened a bit with his results in August/September, though his K numbers did start to go up, which was something I wanted to see. He was also getting well up there innings pitched, so they dialed him down and had him going short stints near the end of the season, to save his arm for the playoffs and just to avoid wearing him down (he has pitched 155.1 innings this season). His overall stats on the season at B-Ham (he was promoted from W-S midseason) were very solid (in ERA, WHIP, BB rate, ground ball rate), except for the aforementioned K rate, and a slightly higher AvgA than you'd like to see... In 15 Games (14 starts) 9-7 W-L 90.1 IP 97 H 34 ER 8 HR 17 BB 32 K 3.39 ERA 1.26 WHIP 1.43 GO/AO .279 AvgA Postseason still in the picture for Charlie, so one more update will come after that, if he gets to pitch. As for 2010, it seems likely he'd be in Charlotte's rotation, and knocking at the door if he pitches well there. Also likely we'll see him in some Spring Training games.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:10 PM) No sir, YOU Lie! LINK That means he is likely in the health industry's pocket, but it doesn't mean he lied about anything.
  21. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) probably because there is no bill to even go off of and the Democrats like to have loopholes in this kind of stuff. like no checking ID's, ever, for anything (except town halls of course) for the record, I believe Obama and don't think he's lying. The latest bill I have seen has a specific clause exempting illegals from coverage. Why do people keep ignoring this? Now, if that disappears and the bill does indeed cover illegals, then I'm with you on the concern. But nothing, other than fear-mongerers yelling unfounded B.S., indicates that would be the case.
  22. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) Queue Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity to give it some publicity and try to raise money for the other guy. I'm sure that's already happening, we just haven't heard about it yet. But a guy who only won with 53% in a tight district, can't really afford to do what he did. There will be a big chunk of middle-of-the-road voters that will immediately shift.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) Jermaine Dye with White Sox has a World Series ring and another division title. He has 163 homers and 452 RBI and a top 5 MVP placement, in just under 5 years, while not playing under 138 games (not including this year). Carlton Fisk hit 214 homers and drove in 762 over 13 different seasons, to go with the one playoff appearance and a Top 3 MVP placement. I know that is the common acceptance around here, but Jermaine Dye has just as much claim to that title as Carlton. I sense a threadjack coming, but Carlton Fisk's impact on the White Sox is far and away bigger than Dye's. I don't think its even close. Fisk was a HOF catcher on the club for over a decade - Dye has been a very good OF for 5 seasons. Zero doubt in my mind that Fisk had a bigger impact. This isn't to diminish Dye's achievements BTW, he's been huge. 2nd best FA signing ever, I'd say. I was just saying that there is a big leap from there to Fisk.
  24. My concerns haven't changed. I don't like the highly government-involved model of this, I don't like the way the cost is being simply funded like any other program, and I don't like that it still allows the insurance companies to screw people in multiple ways. I could care less if the number of uninsured is 30M or 46M, its not really the point. The number would be important if, say, Obama was claiming 30M and it was actually 10,000, or something dramatic like that. But the fact that tens of millions are without it IS a huge problem, that costs ALL OF US money.
