QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 03:51 PM) I hate when people don't believe you like citizen kane or other movies of the like, and are just trying to seem knowledgable, etc. It's apparently poor form to like older classics. Same goes the other way around. If you DON'T like some classic film, people seem to assume you just don't know anything about films.

Sports teams who have "offensive" nicknames
NorthSideSox72 replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (JuiceCruz16 @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) How many people even remember that Stanford was not known as the Cardinal but the Indians and made this change years ago partly due to having a quarterback named Jim Plunkett who was an actual Indian. Stanford has never been the same since becoming the Cardinal have they. I assume this is sarcasm? Stanford is still an elite sports school. -
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) I believe the same thing. But I still want to trade him. If a team offers up something good I jump all over it. He's about to become expensive, I'm not convinced he's not on a decline (I don't think he is, but you never know) and remember, he does have a metal thingamajig in his arm. If we don't get an adequate offer I'm content in hanging on to him. But if the offer is right, I'd pull the trigger and shift Thornton into the closer's role or attempt to sign a FA. I wouldn't be opposed to trading him, but I don't think we'll get much, so I'd rather not. If I am wrong and we can get something good, then great. But I am one of those people that believes that not just any reliever, even a very good one like Thornton, can necessarily be a good closer. It take a certain mentality to be effective at it. I've seen the Sox experiment with moving setup guys to closer, and watched it fail. And there really aren't any guys in AAA or AA for the Sox that look like big time closers either. So you are left with either trying to convert Thornton to a closer, which I put a 50/50 chance on succeeding, or going to find one elsewhere who is just as expensive (if not more) than Jenks. Basically, unless we can get a whole lot for Jenks, I ride him as our closer until he breaks down, and in the meantime try to groom some closers in the system or acquire some serious closing prospects via trade. Thornton can be Plan B.

I'm not ready to cut bait on Jenks yet. I'm not convinced this is a deterioration, I think its equally possible its just a bad year. Remember that most of his bad results came from a really bad July stretch (8.59 ERA, 2.32 WHIP, 4/6 on saves), which he followed up with a very good August (1.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 5/5 on saves), and he had far more innings in that good August than the bad July. That doesn't look like deterioration to me.

Here's a question related... who on the current team is actually good at bunting? I remember Ozzie used to say that Thome was, but I only saw him try once (and I fervently believe that Jim Thome should try bunting once, and just once, every season). Off hand, the ones that seem like they've done it well are Getz and Wise. Anyone else?

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) Kevin Brady, the Texas Congressman quoted in this article voted against emergency funding for repairs on the METRO system after the recent fatal accident. Hypocrisy, just like corruption, knows no party. And I like to revel in people being caught in their hypocrisy, so... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) It would actually be pretty cool if all this space junk someday forms a ring around Earth. "Cool" is not the word I'd use to describe the earth getting a ring of trash.

Again with the extremes. A couple starts aren't ruining anything for him, but the idea that he HAS to start is also silly. I think the benefit of getting back into a couple games, just to get the feel back, and to keep the fan base interested, makes it worth it. But its not a huge deal either way. He doesn't have an arm injury or something, its a busted ankle - if its healed, there is so little risk.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 08:33 AM) WTF is Montana voting for Sabathia for? Sample size, there are probably like 3 people from Montana who even voted, and 2 went to CC because they thought he was a pregnant elk.

Sports teams who have "offensive" nicknames

We're getting close to Buster territory here folks. Let's try to keep it under control (though by its very nature this is a sort of political discussion). -
Sox consider shutting down Floyd and Buehrle
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 08:06 AM) Well I don't want to do anything until the Tigers series anyways. Just because you never know. But say we get swept by KC here or something and completely fall out of it. If they decidwe to shelve MB and Floyd they might as well do the same for Danks. Let Peavy, Hudson, Freddy, DJ and Torres finish the year out. Oh yeah, forgot Torres was here too. OK, sure, I'll take that, if we're done. -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 07:54 AM) If they do they might as well add Danks to the list as well. We can only go so far down this road, though - other than Carrasco and Hudson, who is on the 40 man roster who can be put into the rotation to replace these guys? If you shut down Buehrle, Floyd AND Danks, you don't have enough starting pitchers left, unless you want to have an all-bullpen game or something. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 18, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) We're a home-run hitting team in a home-run loving ballpark. Are job should be to hit the crap out of the ball, get on-base, and play well in the field. We should not be giving away outs to advance runners, who can be driven in by actual productive hits. Honestly, i salivate whenever i see someone drop down a bunt against us. It's an easy out. And the home run hitting teal will be a better team if they can ALSO, occasionally, play small ball. 2005's team showed that - they won mostly on pitching, defense and home runs, but they were that much better because every so often, they could also bunt, or steal a base, or hit and run, etc. Having a team with players who can go either way, depending on the situation, is the ideal.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 04:39 PM) California managed to get 4 of the 15 slots, Illinois got 2 (Burris and Jesse Jr.), and Indiana even managed to get 1 (Visclosky). 8 Dems and 7 Repubs. http://www.citizensforethics.org/node/42385 So that's kind of interesting - the 8/7 ratio is very close the same ratio of the entire house. Corruption knows no party.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) Good. What's the reason people are allowed to vote 'present', by the way? Well, they are allowed to not vote at all. Voting present is the same, except you send a message (as opposed to not being there for the vote or something).

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) Criegh Deeds in a presser today, "I'm not going to raise taxes, but I'm going to sign a transportation plan that raises new revenue." Then in the post-debate press conference, he says, within milliseconds of each other, "I have no plans to raise taxes" followed by "everything is on the table." Good s*** maynard!! You could take those quotes, and they are pretty much exactly the same as what BushCo was saying about attacking Iran. Just sayin'.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 01:35 PM) I’m a huge stat head, and I don’t believe in a manager not making decisions, I believe in a manager making the right decisions. I’m a huge Earl Weaver guy; I hate the idea of giving up outs, because if you can’t trust a player to deliver a hit, or get on base in a run-scoring situation then he probably is a pitcher, or shouldn’t be playing in the major leagues. On the other hand, something people keep forgetting... even a good hitter only gets a hit 30% of the time. What you do with the other 70% is more than twice as important - so making your outs productive is important. That doesn't always mean bunting of course, but this team this year is a perfect example of not getting productive outs (and there are many possible causes for this). Just saying, this whole idea of "if they can't deliver a hit they shouldn't be playing" is ignoring one of the basic realities of baseball - that most of the time, they won't.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) There was an injury delay earlier in the game on a ball hit back to Grienke. Maybe they are also trying to limit his innings. According to a Royals board game thread, Greinke took a line drive off the elbow. He finished the inning anyway, then they took him out. So probably not a big deal, just precautionary.
-
That's odd - Greinke pulled after 5 innings, even though he was rolling. Now KC has a reliever in, and DET has scored a couple, making it 8-2.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) Nah, the hysterical floating head of Harold in the background it makes it PHT worthy IMO, but let's see what the mods do with it. Well, I'm an Admin, and I put it here, so I think I'm keeping it here.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) You guys following the Tiger games crack me up. When are you gonna believe we're toast? We're 5-6 in our last 11. We STILL have done nothing to pick up any ground. Last night's game was horrible. We've gone from 8.5 back to 5.5 back, then back to 6.5. Potential to be 5.5. So no, we have not done "nothing". Also, seriously, your eeyore act is getting old. You don't want to bother following, then don't.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) Good to see Bloomquist and Callaspo hit another team. Grienke with K's in the first. Game discussion going on in the ALC thread in Diamond Club, in case anyone wants to join in.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:57 PM) I have posted in regard to this game in three different threads. Yeah, I went ahead and moved them to this one, so they are in one place.
