I've only seen snippets of the speech, I'll have to see if I can find it on On Demand tonight and watch it. I want to see what he said about the acne lady, and hear the jackass from SC in full context, and see what all the hubub on this speech is about.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 02:06 AM) Awesome.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) It just makes Obama a liar. How is that the case? What exactly did Obama say?
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 08:51 AM) LINK That's not inverse proportion, its direct proportion.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 08:29 AM) What exactly is that? Multiple layers... For one thing, raising the world profile of the city will result in significant increases in tourist dollars coming to the city (aside from just during the event itself). For another thing, the thought is that there will be more federal and state support for city infrastructure projects to help make sure the city is ready. There is of course a question of how much of this will occur, but its unlikely that there won't be some pretty major dollars coming in to make sure the city works properly. The fact that Obama is the President is also helpful here of course. Yet another thing, similar to what happened with the World's Fair over a century ago, many of the structures and sites built for the Olympics will be there for the city to use afterwards - for low income housing for example (athlete dorms), or whatever. So that infrastructure is a definite, not a maybe. One more aspect is, no matter how you feel about Daley, remember he really is the ultimate pothole mayor. If you've lived or spent a lot of time in other cities, you grow to appreciate the little things the city does well, to make it seem more habitable - everything from graffiti patrols to bike lanes, that don't ALWAYS work, but that are far better than what you see elsewhere. So what do you think will happen as we approach the Olympics? I guarantee the city will find resources to get the city looking great in the years building up to the event. Those are some of the big ones, but I am sure there are others as well. Those are all positives for the city.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 10:16 PM) What, you don't trust Mayor Daley? His deep involvement in this is the one shining positive light I'll see in this if Chicago loses on the bid, even though I want Chicago to win the bid. Eh, I don't trust him or the council, but it doesn't much matter anyway. The Olympics can absorb enormouse losses before even getting to that guarantee. They have a $250M private cushion, then there is a $1B insurance policy, THEN the council guarantee kicks in. And since the Olympics typically break even, give or take, I'm just not that worried about it. Not to mention that the real value in this is what we get afterwards, and seperately, from the event itself, which is all worth substantial money.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 12:25 PM) It's a Daley project. He's running it. He's the front man. He pulls the strings and greases the skids. This is just manifestly false. The City of Chicago is not running the Olympics. As badly as Daley wants them to come to Chicago, and as much influence as he has, that is not the same as being in charge. Go look into how the Olympics work and get back to us. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 12:25 PM) To think Daley and his cronies will be left out of the 2016 process is, well... I wont be mean and say what i think. Who said he'd be left out of the process? You seem to think this is all or none - its Daley's Olympics (which if course is false), and anyone else who disagrees is saying Daley has nothing to do with it (also clearly false). Reality is that Daley has a lot of influence, but its still not a City project.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 07:54 AM) I could hardly read that with out gagging on the irony. Yes, the Republicians have some how invented demonizing the President. GMAB. Fortunately, no one said that. What the author did say, though, was right on.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) LINK I had forgotten about the speech last night, and now understand. What a jackass. It doesn't take cajones to be an idiot in a crowd, it just means being loud with your stupidity.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 09:40 PM) "You LIE." You can argue about whether this should have been said in that forum, but i don't think anyone can disagree that, that took a lot of cajones to say. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 09:42 PM) The apology took 1.5 hours to come out. I don't understand what these posts are referring to.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 01:30 AM) He was the best free agent signing in the history of the White Sox organization. It's not insulting him to say that he sucks and the Sox need to move on. Right now, he does suck, and the White Sox need to move on. Carlton Fisk says hello. But I agree on principle, Dye was a fantastic signing, but its time to cut him loose after the season is over.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 07:24 PM) He was activated from the DL on September 3rd and played 3 games before the end of the season. He'll split time with Jared Price in the playoffs. Am I the only one who has the issue where I look at a player profile on milb.com, and its days or weeks behind? Even if you refresh? Really annoying, but this happens to me regularly.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) Yes. Well, the whole world seems to disagree with you, but you're entitled to your opinion...as wrong as it clearly is. I'll happily wear that. My opinion on films won't agree with the majority all the time.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) No, I don't remember of any school refusing to air this based on pressure. Any school district that does this is silly and shouldn't do it. A presidential address to children about school is a good thing. You don't have to identify with the party, its about the office. But then again I haven't seen any congressional hearings or Obama officials being called to testify about the funding for this event. Interesting the NEA must be a complete different animal depending on what party the speech comes from. The speech is pretty damn close. Yet here are the 2 different sound bytes of reactions by the same organization. 2009 1991 That's NEA being a lobbying group, they can yell and scream all they want, I don't care what they think of either one really. And I agree its silly in both cases to take issue with it.

Donny never got back on the field after his 8/14 injury, and is still listed as on the DL, so he apparently won't be in the playoffs with B-Ham. His season is over. Final 2009 stats: CHARLOTTE/AAA: In 45 games, 153 AB... .216/.259/.307/.566 38 K against 10 BB BIRMINGHAM/AA: In 17 games, 59 AB... .220/.258/.237/.495 18 K against 2 BB Future isn't looking good for D Lucy. He's 27 now, put up pretty bad numbers at both AA and AAA this season, spent more time on the DL, and barely played in 2008 due to the knee injury. His athleticism would allow him to possibly play other positions, but his bat wouldn't. Hopefully he gets healed up and gets a shot somewhere next year in AAA to show he's got something to bring to the major league table. But that seems like a long shot at present.

Time for his end of (regular) season update. Justin started the year in Charlotte, was demoted to B-Ham after struggling, spent a little time on the DL, went back up to Charlotte for a few weeks in August, then went back down to B-Ham again to finish the regular season there and fill a gap in their rotation. His numbers during this last stint in B-Ham were decent: 3 games, 13.2 IP, 16 hits (not good), but only 3 BB against 13 K (good to see). Here are his final numbers for each level: CHARLOTTE/AAA: 3-9 in 18 Games (12 starts) 74.2 IP 86 H 42 ER 10 HR 27 BB 53 K 5.06 ERA 1.51 WHIP .281 AvgA BIRMINGHAM/AA: 4-2 in 9 Games (7 starts) 51.2 IP 59 H 23 ER 3 HR 20 BB 26 K 4.01 ERA 1.53 WHIP .309 AvgA Justin has been assigned to Peoria of the Arizona Fall League - it appears the Sox want to see if Cassel has the talent to make it happen in the bigs. His strong 2008 was followed by a disappointing 2009, and there are questions about his lack of velocity, so this AFL stint could be telling of his future. Hard to say what 2010 will bring, until after the AA playoffs and AFL season have closed.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) School District That Bans Obama's Back to School Speech Buses Children to Hear Bush... Of all the flaws that either party tends to have issues with, the one that bothers me most is the bizarre desire of many recent-model conservatives to choose ignorance. I can't imagine why someone would prefer to know less and be exposed to less knowledge and experience, but that is what some of them are doing. It is choosing to be stupid, as if that were something to be proud of.

With Kanny's regular season over (playoffs start today), its time for the August/September and end of season update... Remenowsky had a very successful year as Kannapolis' closer, putting up numbers that range from good to downright filthy. Here are his final stats: 7-3 W-L in 54 Games 24 Saves 63.1 IP 40 H 14 ER 3 HR 16 BB 109 K 1.97 ERA 0.88 WHIP .174 AvgA 2.3 BB/9 15.5 K/9 6.81 K:BB These numbers are pretty ridiculous, even stronger than what he did in 2008 in limited Rookie League action. Its a mystery to me (and others) why this guy wasn't promoted to W-S at some point, but it appears (see his interview) that the organization does have a plan for him. 2010, probably he'll be in W-S, though B-Ham is not out of the question. It may depend on how they see Dan's future - he's not a prototypical closer in terms of stuff, and he was a starter in college. He may get an NRI for ST in 2010. But before 2010, the playoffs are coming up for Kanny, so we'll see how he does in the post-season.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 09:04 AM) His popout to bunt ratio is 3 points lower than most 3B in the league. Totally unacceptable. Stop it.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 08:57 AM) I couldn't disagree more. I was thoroughly entertained and engrossed in each scene from beginning to end. I think that Tarantino does this to people. He tends to engender a strong like or dislike. I liked Pulp Fiction a lot, and Reservoir Dogs was good. Kill Bill movies were terrible, and this one was only a little better.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) The one nice thing that would come out of Crede retiting is the end of the damned threads. Well that just sounds painful.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 08:48 AM) Whoah. Care to explain? What's to explain? Other than a few well-done scenes of pre-violent tension ( everything else was laughably stupid dialogue combined with either pointless violence and/or overly blatant attempts at art. It was all just so ham-fisted and blunt, it could have been written by a 12 year old. Which is why it was so odd that SOME scenes, usually when they had less dialogue and more non-verbal acting, were so well done.
-
Inglorious Basterds was both good and bad. Certain individual scenes were great - the acting and dialogue in the scenes of building tension were done very well. Everything else was a disaster, and the whole thing put together didn't feel like a film at all. Tarantino seems to have lost his was in recent films.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 8, 2009 -> 11:24 AM) There needs to be a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. I once felt that way too (with war-time or other special exemptions of course, not just flat), but changed my mind (flip-flop!!!). Can't work.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 03:59 PM) Please. It's fine when posts are made like that the other way around though. Typical. Not to mention it was obviously a joke because of the way statements from the "other side" have gone. Yeah I see it was a joke now, but who said its fine the other way around? Do you see me screaming about "ANTI-HEALTHERZ!!!!!!!!!!" or whatever? No, and you won't. And I love the "Typical" add-on there, which is doing the exact same thing. You apparently think I'm a "typical" liberal, which is particularly funny since I'm not a liberal at all.
