  1. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) But this is what I'm asking...he isn't going to pitch until he's in his late 30's early 40's, at least that's what he said. And after the current crop of pitchers who hit 300, it's going to be a long time, so, do you think the Hall is going to have to change it's criteria? Look at other aspects. Obviously, he's not dominant like Koufax, who had a short, but incredible, career. Not to mention the steroid era...because, if MB is ever found positive, I think he should get his money back. He's said that is a possibility, not definite. And athletes who make promises like that (and his wasn't even a promise), rarely keep them. They can't leave the game.
  2. I am fairly confident that no one, myself included, is "right" on the topic.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) I'm positive. I'm UP on the year. As a matter of fact, I've outpaced the S&P 500 by over 8% since the downturn. And for the sake of being honest -- I'm not taking credit for that like it was all skill, because I know in some ways, I was lucky, but whatever the case may be, it worked out well! I was really just being facetious. And in fact, I just looked, and I'm up on the year pretty much straight across as well. Last year sucked, though. I felt like Dorothy with the slippers - just keep saying "its a buying opportunity", over and over again.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) I just find it difficult to believe that "God" would be spiteful. Seems a bit immature. As a matter of personal belief, I agree. If there is a God in any conventional, major religion sense, I'm pretty confident they will judge me based on my actions, not which building I chose to kneel in.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) To be more clear, it's not my place for the "condemnation". I hope that people are not on the wrong side of that belief, is all I meant. I'm not trying to personally condemn them. Does that make better sense? Yes. I guess I just think, God is something we cannot possibly know. That's why its called faith. And I can't really say with any certaintly whatsoever what will happen when I die, or when you die, or anyone else dies. That's why it doesn't sit well with me when people say things like "you better be right", because that is only meaningful if you are also willing to say "I better be right".
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) Talk to me if Mark makes it to the 275 win range. Mark being Mark until age 39-ish does that, thus my previous post.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) I don't really "collect" anything. I buy the things I want -- but not in mass quantities...like I own a bike, a tv...etc...but I don't really collect "things" these days. I have hundreds upon hundreds of DVD's from yesteryear, but these days I don't bother with things like that. I guess you can say I collect stocks these days, but that's not really a waste of money, but still...it's a collection. Heh. You sure about that?
  8. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) I don't condemn people for thinking one way or the other, but just hope you're not on the wrong side of it the day you die. You just said, I don't condemn you, then said, you are condemned.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) You're in an infinite regress problem--where did those membranes come from? What existed before those? And before that etc. etc. Turtles, all the way down.
  10. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) Got a question of the most boring day of the year. But it is related to Buehrle (mods, feel free to break off into new thread, if needed). Is Mark Buehrle a Hall of Famer? OK, so he won't get to 300 wins or 3000 strikeouts and he's only been in the top 5 of Cy voting once... But, let me give you some stats off the top of my head: - Been more or less the #1 starter for the Sox since 2001 - Double digit wins in ever season he's been a starter - Lifetime ERA of 3.79 - More than 200 IPs in all but his first season, which was mostly as a reliever anyway - Top 10 in ERA 4 times - Won a World Series. - Been to 4 AS games - He is currently eighth all-time in wins and innings pitched by a pitcher in a White Sox uniform. - Started every season opener from 2002-2006, 2008-2009 - Threw a no-hitter I know his career obviously isn't over and a lot of things can happen, but let's say MB continues on his same pace until he retires. Here's why I ask...of course if you look at the pitchers that are currently or will shortly be in the Hall, MB doesn't stack up. BUT, how much cache does a player get for the little known stats? Also, the criteria is going to change. Do you think the Hall will look at the fact that he was the White Sox best pitcher for so long? Discuss. Right now? Heck no. If he pitches like he does, until he's about 41 or 42, then he's got a decent shot. If he does that, and wins a Cy somewhere in there, I say he's probably in. He's just really good, he has a WS ring already, is only 30, has a low effort and highly consistent motion (longevity), he's a great citizen and a gamer, he's stuck with one team (so far), and he's not reliant on velocity that would diminish over time. He's Jamie Moyer, but better. So, as I said, if he keeps being MB until he's 41, maybe gets a Cy Young in there somewhere, he's got a good shot.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) Now we're to the part of the thread where people start insulting each other. See my warning.
  12. OK, we're getting close to the line here on the religious comments. Saying "people who believe X are morons/retarded" when many people here believe that, is not going to fly. So before it gets more out of hand, let's just drop that s***, mmmmkay?
  13. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) People who follow a religion are weak minded? The hell? Even as an atheist, that may just be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Yeah, there are few if any more complex issues we all face than religion and faith. Hard to call anyone a moron because of their beliefs or lack thereof.
  14. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 12:55 PM) 30 of my opinions that tend to be unpopular: 1. Abortion should be legalized. 2. Stem cell research needs to be 100% unrestricted. 3. The Bible is a book of lies. 4. People who follow a religion are weak-minded. 5. People should never submit themselves to a religion. Muslim women should not wear hijabs or burquas and nuns should not wear habits. 6. Nuns and clergy are morons and they're wasting their lives. 7. God didn't create man, Man created god. 8. Churches, Mosques, and other places of worship should lose their tax-exempt status and pay taxes. 9. Churches, Mosques, and all other places of worship needs to be outlawed. 10. People should be able to arm themselves against cops. 11. Killing a cop should not warrant an automatic death penalty sentence. 12. It should be illegal to have kids recite the Pledge of Alliegence in schools. 13. The quality of education in all public schools should be equal, money should be diverted from high-performing schools in the suburbs and given to the low-performing inner-city schools. 14. White women are usually unattractive compared to women of other races. 15. White people are more ignorant to racial issues because they blindly benefit from white privledge. 16. America needs to stop corporations from outsourcing jobs overseas by levying them big fines. 17. Corporations should not be able to get as much power, wealth, and influence that they do. 18. Drivers should not have to stop for pedestrians, pedestrians should wait at the curb until the street is all clear, even in front of supermarkets. 19. More neighborhoods need to have more affordable housing and refuse to allow developers build million dollar+ homes. 20. Rich people need to pay more taxes. 21. Rich people doesn't need to live in giant houses, they should be forced to live in modest homes because it's bull to have poorer people's property taxes go up whenever rich people invade a neighborhood. 22. Illegal immigrants should have an easier way of getting legalized once they enter the United States. 23. One exception to #16 is to let corporations outsource jobs to Mexico instead. Doing that would help Mexico's economy and reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the United States at the same time. 24. Red-light cameras need to be outlawed. 25. Those guilty of spamming need to face prison sentences. 26. Raise the prices on alcohol and tobacco. 27. Health care need to be more affordable, further taxing the rich should solve this. 28. The FCC needs to go f**k off and stop censoring everything even remotely offensive. 29. It should be illegal for the military to recruit kids at high schools. 30. SUV's need to be taken off the roads. Tell us how you really feel.

Books - lots of books, I don't think I've ever gotten rid of any. And lots of outdoorsy bits.
  16. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) Lucy's back in Charlotte, Ricks is back in B'ham. Don't know what's going on. Are you going by what is on MiLB.com? That's not too reliable. No way they keep all three in Charlotte. One of Armstrong or Lucy has to get sent down, traded or released.
  17. QUOTE (Shamrock4Life @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) yeah slow internet through various satelites really leaves no room for streaming media either, plus the whole company's internet filter screws it all up. What company has placed you in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) De-desalinization plants? As far as I know, those are highly inefficient in their current iteration. Doesn't mean they can't improve though. In any case, yet another reason to develop these new power sources.
  19. D Lucy has been demoted to AA Birmingham, to make room in Charlotte for Tyler Flowers. Adam Ricks was sent back to W-S. Lucy will now be starting in B-Ham, with Jared Price backing him up. Lucy's final line at Charlotte: .216/.259/.307/.566 That line had actually improved, with Donny going 7-for-20 in his last 6 games with a 2B, a HR and a couple walks. But still not looking good for a guy about to turn 27, demoted to AA. Its hard to tell what this means for Lucy vis a vis Armstrong. It gets Lucy more playing time, whereas Armstrong will be backing up Flowers. So does this mean they think Armstrong, or Lucy, are potential backups to Flowers in the future? Or neither? In any case, Donny needs to make his last 6 games the new trend for the rest of the season in B-Ham if he wants a shot at the bigs at some point. Its a very long shot now. I'd have to speculate that this is at least partially due to the May 2008 knee injury, since he was hitting pretty well in Charlotte before that happened. But who knows.
  20. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 10:46 PM) So....Lucy was demoted to Birmingham? Yes. And Ricks went back to W-S.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) Housing is one thing but I'm talking about natural resources like water. As I've said before, 50 years from now, when oil is less of an issue, the battles over fresh water will make the battles over oil look tame.
  22. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) Coercion. A guy may get turned on and then decide he doesn't want to have sex--you have a right to change your mind. If consent is not freely given, if someone is too drunk to get consent. I'm sure there are multiple ways for women to do it. We just don't do it as often. I was going to say, also, statutory rape. Not forcible rape like you'd think of, but, say, a 28 year old teacher playing with a 14 year old student. That does happen, and its rape for a reason - its high manipulation and abuse.
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Filming on the last Two Potter movies has already begun. David Yate’s, the guy who directed Potter 5 and 6, is doing them. buh? That stinks, I had thought it was Del Toro.
  24. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) What are you talking about? All I stated was that Barry and friends (friends being the congress) were up to the their magic act. While everyone is watching the right hand (Sotomayor hearings), the left hand is really the important one you should be focusing on (Healthcare Bill). Actually, you said this: QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 10:06 PM) The Obama administration and it's tricks. Once again, while everyone is looking one way (Sotomayor hearings), Barry and Friends are coming up with a bill for nationalized health care already, and no one in the MSM is reporting it. The Obama Administration is not the CBO, has nothing to do with the CBO. You were responding to the post about CBO estimates. If you don't like the estimates, blame the CBO. Even better, provide an actual, material reason why you disagree with it, other than "tricks".
  25. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 09:24 AM) Can I get proof that most cases of rape are about power and control? I honestly thought that was common knowledge. Maybe you are thinking of child abusers, which is a different breed of scumbag.
