What do we want from the Braves?
NorthSideSox72 replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
One thing I think is true - I doubt these teams are scouting Dotel. If they were, Thornton would not have gone 2 innings last night. We would have seen Octavio out there. -
I thought for sure this would be a thread suggesting we re-acquire Ross Gload.

Concealed Weapons Proposal Up for Vote

Per the Trib, there were scouts at yesterday's game from at least three teams - ATL, BAL and ARZ. Not sure if they were there for Carlos, or someone else.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) I'm looking at tickets on stubhub, and I want to sit in a row with a little extra room because of the kids. That is one of the reasons I am never giving up our 4-seat location in the front row of the UD.

Kanny won, Remenowsky with his usual line to close it - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. He hasn't given up a run since EARLY JUNE.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 04:13 PM) Awesome! Someone must be in the front roooooooooooowwww.

I see no good reason to, and won't, but that is just my personal philosophy.

Minor League Catch-All thread 2009 edition
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
So here's a sort of random thought... a name we aren't hearing much about is Logan Johnson. He was converted from OF to C for this year, he's at W-S now. He's got an .858 OPS. If his defense is half-decent at C, that's a pretty good offensive performance for a catcher. He's also 25 at High A so he is by no means a great prospect, but, if he could put up similar offensive numbers in AA later this year or next year, and be a good defensive C, I think he might be someone to keep an eye on as a potential backup to Flowers in a year or two. Anyone have any info on how is transition to C is going? -
OK kid, make us proud. You could pitch yourself into a 2010 Sox job, maybe, if you show something good. QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Showcase for a trade? It could happen.... He's 26 and wasn't exactly near the top of anyone's lists of prospects, even in our system. FS Mid-Season I think he was #13, so people associated with the Sox had started to catch on. But he's not someone who is going to get you a lot in return by himself, unless he puts up some solid numbers in the majors this year. He could be a throw-in to sweeten the pot in a multi-player trade, though.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) People still do tend to over-exaggerate Wise's lack of defensive ability (and I'm one of the biggest Wise bashers on this site). He's no worse than average, if you hit a fly ball to CF he will catch it. He's not good, but he's not Mackowiak bad by any means. I'd say Wise is average on the corners, a little below average in CF, based on what I see. But he's just not in the same league as BA defensively.

QUOTE (hogan873 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) The drinking age should be lowered to 19. DUI laws should be stricter. Child molesters should be jailed immediately in a general population prison (people who harm children are very unpopular in prison). There is a such thing as reverse discrimination. It happens a lot. Ghosts exist but only interact with those that believe. Marijuana should be legalized. Evolution is a much better answer than creationism. Heh. Funny those are next to each other.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) "Blooper reel"? Wise has a career .991 fielding% with only 3 errors with 322 PO, And in CF it's .993%. Brian is also a career .991% with 5 E to 540 PO. I'm not saying Wise is a great fielder or that he even deserves to be in the majors at all, but you make him sound like a bumbling fool. FPct is a relatively unhelpful fielding statistic, particularly for OF's. Most OF's make few errors, and the pct doesn't give you any idea on range, arm, jumps, reads, etc. There are a whole host of other measures you could use to get a better picture. But really, with defense, your best tool is your eyes. Wise gets really poor jumps and simply doesn't get to a lot of balls that Brian does, which won't show up in your PCT measure.

Baltimore and Atlanta scouting the ChiSox last night?

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 05:43 PM) Clayton Richard's average fastball this season is about 92 MPH. According to PitchFX he's topped out at about 95. I believe that is pretty much what I said earlier. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) Still looking for answer to question, what other team possesses what we have, not to mention Poreda as well? Second, Richard had numerous starts when he was 93-95 MPH this season, on various guns. Why WOULDN'T we be able to extrapolate that he could easily/comfortably throw 93-94-95-96 coming out of the bullpen? Did anyone predict Richard would be throwing 2-3 MPH harder than Poreda this season? I don't think so. Or that he could possibly be one of the two center pieces in a trade for Jake Peavy? Do you ever stay on subject for the full length of a post? You said Sherrill was the equivalent of Thornton/Richard, I pointed out that saying Thornton/Richard is like saying any lefty/any lefty. You then asked how many other teams have lefties who happen to be in the 94-98 range (which is a pretty broad range), which is not what I was talking about, nor is it what you were talking about originally. I need to go beat my head on a brick wall. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) What other team has two lefties that both can throw 94-98 MPH consistently out of the bullpen? Richard does not throw 94-98 consistently. He throws 92-93 consistently, occasionally hitting 95 when he reaches back for extra. Thornton is 96-97 like clockwork, occasionally 98. They are entirely different in delivery, pitches, velocity, strengths/weaknesses... again, except for the lefthandedness. -
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 09:43 AM) the red light ticket should just be a petty offense meaning they wouldn't issue a warrant, what they would likely do is call your name at the court date and if you're not there enter a conviction on your driving record and take judgment on any court costs, meaning it could jack a few things up. Change your address though ASAP. Jessie White can suspend your license for that and you really wouldn't have any notice. Just get pulled over one day and arrested, because that is a misdo, not a petty. Part of the neat little trick with those cameras is, since they didn't want to put in a robust appeals process, they made then non-moving violation fines. So it doesn't go on your record as a traffic ticket, its more like a parking ticket. So definitely no arrest warrants.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) I wonder if KW is going to consider trading for veteran players Melvin Mora or A. Huff for 3B, with Beckham moving to 2B? Maybe 10% odds? Sherrill is the other Orioles player reportedly being offered up in trade, but he would be way too expensive to acquire...plus, we already have his equivalent in Thornton/Richard (eventually) down in the pen. Thornton and Richard are nothing alike other than being left-handed. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) I just don't get where people think we'll deal a pen arm. Probably because we have one of the best collections of pen arms in baseball, one of whom is a pending FA, and we have a few apparently good RP prospects ready at AAA, and we just traded for a younger, cheaper one. Makes perfect sense to me. -
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) and you would be wrong. A healthy tcq is a top 10-20 player in all of baseball. LOL, I love when people respond to a purely subjective description with absolute statements like "you are wrong", as if there is a right or wrong on the subject.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) Saint Brendan, but he was before the Vikings. You may be thinking of Madoc, who was Welsh. But ya, i've written a couple papers on the subject for history classes when I was in college and there is so much evidence. It's just when you say it to people they think you're a nut. People used to, but I think most people now acknowledge Columbus was just one in a long line. I think I was confusing Brendan and Madoc maybe, wasn't 100% sure, some of the details were fuzzy. I also take pride in the fact that I was an early adopter of the Sandia Man theory and other detractors from the idea that all the Indians came over on the land bridge, and now the general thought is starting to agree. Too many findings now of evidence prior to when that bridge was even there, plus the obvious differences in body types (skull shapes, etc.) between Eskimo/Aleut and the Indian cultures. I'd love to know the back story there, but we may never know, who they really were.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:22 PM) Not really. I haven't seen/read any of the Harry Potter series, so I'm not going to comment on that specifically. Certain books are impossible to portray on screen well. Lolita comes to mind. In cases of these books, well, the audience is s*** out of luck unless they read the book. These books are rare. Adapting from text to screen is a simple process. Where it gets ruined is generally in the business side of things. I imagine if Hollywood was less worried about how much of a cash cow their movie is, they'd sacrifice less creativity to cater to a focus group and concentrate more on making a good film. That said, filmmaking and writing are two different arts. A certain amount of the story is bound to be lost in translation, but that doesn't mean we need to cut out big, important chunks of a story to 'make it work' -- in cases like this, Hollywood should be required to open the film with: "Based on the Harry Potter novels." All true, except that ALSO, some books have too much going on to really fit into a normal length movie. Any of Clancy's books come to mind, only one of which was made into a decent film (Red October), and that still was missing huge plot lines, major characters, etc.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) Kinda feels like calling up AP was a massive waste of time for everyone involved. If anything using him that little, may have stunted the development that he could have had in AA or AAA. I tend to agree that it was a mistake, I see nothing useful from having done it the way it was done.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:06 PM) All somewhat connected: Christopher Columbus had knowledge of the New World, at the least, and at the most possibly even maps. Henry Sinclair landed in present day Canada roughly 100 years before Columbus landed in Hispaniola The Templars were not eradicated in 1307 and the survivors fled to Portugal and Scotland. There were a number of groups who were in the Americas before Columbus. Corte-Real landed in Nova Scotia in like 1481, the Irish priest whose name escapes me has a pretty believable story a few centuries before that, of course the Vikings are now thought to have gotten as far south as Massachussets in the 10th century or so, the Chinese have some good evidence they were there. And of course since the whole Bering Land Bridge thing is no longer a viable explanation for most Indian groups (other than the Eskimo/Aleut cultures), they came from somewhere else, with the best theory I have seen talking about Asian-spawned Pacific Islander cultures. Columbus really wasn't much of a first, at all.
