  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:00 PM) But, that is true. So we should encourage and amplify it? Makes no sense. Its wrong, the HOF has rules beyond stats for evaluation (as I am glad they do), and this guy clearly violated those standards. He's not a Hall of Famer.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) And watch we'll still lose. Their team is in shambles and we look like we have no chance against them. So frustrating. Shambles may be a bit strong, no? This team was 6 or 7 our and 6 or 7 under in early June, and raced back to tie for 1st, now fell back 2 games with some recent suckage in the past week. Let's not assume we're tanking quite that quick.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:13 PM) In case you missed it, Liriano is officially scrated and Duensing is starting in his place. Have we faced Duensing before?
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) It could be because I live more in the downtown/loop area, and I bike as well, and I am in the minority of people who stop at a light or a stop sign. Most of the time bikes just fly through the sign on madison especially and then get angry when they almost get clocked. It is illegal not to follow traffic laws, and I think the police need to step up and issue tickets. Well, I will say I don't usually come to a full stop at stop signs while on the bike. I slow down to a crawl, pull up to the line, and take my turn. But I don't just fly through.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) Link There's your answer. So really, its teen births that make it so high (at least compared to Canada)? Seems weird, as I'd think some other countries would have far more teen births.
  6. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) honestly, conservatives should embrace this. they favor smaller government, and a quick way to reduce the size/scope of government, is to sell off things that they own/manage. (parking meters, tollways, buildings, etc) so if Arizona does this, they just reduced the size of their government, probably reduced some government workers too and moved those jobs into the private space. There is fiscally conservative, and then there is fiscally moronic. This falls into the latter category.
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) Not when Q is doing his best Wise impression. He's really not though. He's been hitting the ball better as games go on, looking more comfortable at the plate. The results will show it in due time, unless he reinjures himself.
  8. QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) Podsednik CF Beckham 3B Dye RF Konerko DH Ramirez SS Kotsay 1B Quentin LF Nix 2B Castro C Contreras P Interesting. I like Beckham at 2. But I'd flip TCQ and Ramirez.
  9. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) Who is he going to pinch hit for...... Wise.
  10. QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) Sample size. 67 AB is actually a pretty good number of PH at bats in the modern game.
  11. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) Makes you wonder about NSS72's night job... LOL, I'm 6'3", 245, with minimal coordination and I'm slow as molasses. NSS dancing = epic disaster. I think the injury was a break while playing basketball in college.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) HuffPo- So, in order to plug a budget hole, they are going to put themselves over a barrel and become renters? WTF? The state of Arizona must have some real estate or hard assets they could sell if they were that deperate, that they can function without, and that they don't have to rent back.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) Commodities have never had the uptick rule. That is purely an SEC and stock rule. Besides that what else are you talking about that isn't already being done? That's what I am wondering - what other regulations should there be on listed derivatives that would be in any way useful?
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) I have a list of fractional/decimal equivalents taped to the side of my monitor. It's much easier to use a base-10 system like metric since that what we use for just about everything else. I think we should convert all measures to Base 36. Takes up less bytes.
  15. Kinda surprised Mike Strong hasn't signed. He's a small-time community college pitcher, who went in the 25th round - I'd think he'd jump at the chance.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) Seems to be a recurring theme. From BearSox, yes. But from most of the rest of us, not so much. Hard to say for sure this early, but we've actually got a significant number of 2009 draft picks doing well so far. Now with Thompson signed as well, I'm pretty happy with the draft. Phegley is really the only guy who seems to be havign value issues, and its still early on him as well. If we can sign one of the couple remaining big time draftees before deadline, I'll be pretty happy.
  17. QUOTE (vandy125 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) I just did a quick search on the percentage of health insurance plans that come from for-profit vs the non-profit and found this out: Non-Profit Stats So, that seems to me to point that a good percentage of health insurance companies are not out there focusing on profits. Granted, I did not follow through completely on the source of the information from that web site (Primary AIS's Directory of Health Plans: 2008), but it does seem to be legit. 48% of actual subscribers is a more meaingful number. But still, I am pleasantly surprised at even that number.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) The only way it will ever work is if we start teaching kids about it starting in kindergarten so they grow up with it. But for everyone, adapting would be a major annoyance. So far that isn't working for soccer either.
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) WTF what? You don't think the government sees the healthcare industry as another stream of income? Give me a break. I think his WTF was not understanding your cookie jar. I don't understand it either. But I could sure go for a chocolate chip cookie right now.
  20. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) That. Except I don't. Why is it everyone here assumes I like the idea of universal government-run healthcare? Have I ever said anything of the sort?
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) I think Kap, and myself to some degree, are going to extremes to make a point. People are taking these extremes in a very literal sense, which is their right, but the point is that neither of us (from what I gather here) trust the government to run health care any differently than it runs everything else -- right into deficit and right into the ground. Healthcare is the cookie jar the government has never been able to get near -- every time they've tried to reach in for some, the bad ass cookies inside beat it down when it tried...and they smell blood in the water now. The people have turned on healthcare...so strike while the irons hot. Why? Because they realize the cookies overflowing in that jar are made of money...and they want it. All of it. Regardless of what happens after they get it. And in my opinion, all chance of good discussions flies out the window when you decide to use silly extremes, strawmen and ALL CAPS POSTZZZ to make your point. Think about it for just a second. If you are at a party, do you really want to talk to the raving lunatic who has no personal space and gets all frothy at the mention of politics? Or would you rather talk with someone sane? Because you, and kap, are probably smart folks. But if you don't post like one, I know no different. Sorry if that is a bit stinging, but its what I see.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) Heres the thing, MOST cyclists in chicago DO NOT obey any basic traffic laws, and yet get upset when THEY cause almost every collision with a car. Circling in the middle of a busy intersection so you can blow through a stop light ILLEGALY warrants a ticket, and if you are struck, YOU caused it. I will say that most of the bicycle assholes in chicago are of the same cloth, messengers and delivery people who have zero regard for laws or cars in general. 1. Let's just put aside the lunatic bike messengers for a moment, because, yeah, they are insane. That isn't commuting or recreational riders. 2. I don't think its MOST cyclists, any more than I think its MOST drivers, that are being stupid about bikes/cars in traffic. In fact, I think its a minority of both. As I commute home (my commute inbound is super-early so there is little traffic), I'll be at a light with a small pack of bikers. There will always be one guy, one idiot out there bobbing and weaving in the intersection. The others, that you probably don't see, are sitting there waiting at the light with all the cars.
  23. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) Why, because he has strong feelings against big government? Or because you (and a lot) of people here disagree with him? I'm happy he joined this conversation, I was feeling alone. No. In fact, if you look carefully at this thread, you won't see me disagreeing with kap at all. I've suggested a few alternatives, but I don't agree with either party's stance right now, which I think I've made clear. I say that because... QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) Yep. I just bend over and take everything government and shove it right up my ass and smile! Because, they are the only ones that can take care of us.
  24. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) Why? Kotsay is now the backup 1B. Beckham plays almost every day at 3B. Wise can play all the outfield positions better than Kotsay. Wise shouldn't be on the team, but Fields has nowhere to play at all now with Kotsay here. I'm not so sure there. And Kotsay can hit a baseball.
