  1. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 12:01 PM) John Hughes is the North Shore. Or more accurately, the North Shore made John Hughes.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) I saw him at an Al Gore dinner last year and he looked like a mess. If I didn't know he was the mayor I'd have thought he was some schlub off the street. Hair was messy, suit didn't fit well, goofy mannerisms. And you were surprised by this? Its those sorts of commonisms that are among the reason Chicagoans love the guy. He comes off as the regular guy (sort of).
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) Like others have mentioned above, I think he's been swinging the bat rather nicely of late. Honestly I'm surprised Kotsay didn't play for Dye yesterday with the way Dye's been playing the last few games. Quentin seems on the verge of a breakout game and I thought Santana would have been the perfect pitcher to go up against. Dye definitely needs a day off. He is impatient at the plate lately, and his defense has been worse than it already had been. And Kotsay is hitting the ball hard, so, why not?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2009 -> 11:04 AM) Yeah that is surprising, usually when I have run into him, he has his detail with him. Plus he is really short, how did you even notice him way down there His female assistant was taller than he was. And I must confess, I think she was the one that caused me to glance in the first place.
  5. So yesterday, I was walking to go pick up some lunch downtown. A man and woman walk up next to me, waiting for a light. I glance over, and the man is Mayor Daley. The woman was an assistant of some kind I assume. Having met him on a couple occasions but not knowing him well, I give the courtesy head nod, and he does the same. Just thought it was odd that it was just Da Mayor and one assistant, wandering through downtown, unnoticed by anyone else apparently.
  6. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) ROFLMAO remains my favorite piece of internet lingo. I try to use it in everyday i speech. How does one work an acronym like that into conversation? Do you sound out the letters, or make it into a word?
  7. CJ Retherford has 32 doubles in 366 AB. That's good.
  8. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 06:05 PM) I live a minute from Shermer Road. It's really cool to see my high school and others in the area in his movies. Breakfast Club is a classic. RIP Yeah, I actually went to New Trier, in the late 80's. Felt like Hughes was somehow, oddly, intruding in our lives. Still though, RIP.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 04:13 PM) So is the cost arguement garbage? The Sox had the team with the best record in baseball in town, had perfect weather, had discounted tickets, and perfect weather. They drew 30k, 32k, and 28k. For a weekday series, including a day game, against a team with very little national following (despite being a good club, no one here cares about them)... I'll take a 30k average for that series. That's a lot better than the, what, low 20's average we got for LAD?
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Either way I think we gave up too much. You realize it was NORRIS Hopper, not DENNIS Hopper, right?
  11. Also interesting to note when looking at the 2010 outfield options, Stefan Gartrell was just promoted to Charlotte after posting an .895 OPS for B-Ham. He's a corner guy though, not a CF. But worth noting when considering 2010.
  12. QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) The Nationals added players to their Triple A Syracuse roster on Thursday, acquiring first baseman Daryle Ward and outfielder Norris Hopper from Triple A Charlotte, a White Sox affiliate. This is Ward's second stint in the Nationals organization. He played for the Major League club in 2006, hitting .308 with six home runs and 19 RBIs before being traded to the Braves on Aug. 31 of that year. Ward was hitting .255 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs for Charlotte. In stints with Triple A Louisville and Charlotte, Hopper was hitting a combined .293 with 25 RBIs. http://therocket.mlblogs.com/archives/2009...ard_hopper.html Clearing space for the Cubans I hope? Stefan Gartrell was promoted to Charlotte yesterday (see FutureSox forum), so the Hopper trade is making room for him. With Ward, not sure, but it seemed like Charlotte was overloaded with OF/1B or 3B types, so Ward had no place to be. I wouldn't look too much into it.
  13. QUOTE (The Baconator @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 12:59 PM) I just feel like it was very similar to Sphere which was a great movie and better book. Event Horizon was 'ehh', I'd rather watch Sphere I thought Sphere was a disappointing movie, but the book was definitely good. That was back when Chricton was actually writing stuff worth reading, not bad movie scripts for the SciFi channel.
  14. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 11:31 AM) What exactly does Hudson have to work on in the minors, though? That's the issue for me. And if this idea of overcoming first start jitters were true, well, lets throw up Hudson and get his out of the way too so he can dominate. People are just transfixed with prospects and this idea of them progressing bit by bit, year by year. Sure, if a player needs to work on some aspect of their game against increasing competition this is the set standard, but if they're already put together (as Beckham was) then what use is there in the minors? Then, even when they're ready, it seems to be a collective feeling among fans that every other option should be explored before doing what's right. Yes, not everyone is Beckham; but Hudson doesn't appear to be challenged -- so why delay him? Our organization obviously doesn't believe much more time is needed if they've promoted him so far, so quickly. I don't see what Charlotte can possibly do for his development. What's the worst that can happen with Hudson, that he's terrible? Ok, then demote him after. If he's any type of man he wont fall apart in the minors upon returning. He'll learn from his mistakes. I'd honestly rather try Hudson and risk whatever he brings than stick with Torres. This goal here should be putting the best option on the mound, and we all know what that is. Also, here is another danger with promoting someone that quickly from low levels. Its possible they are just riding a streak. Less than a season could do that, and give you a falsely positive outlook on them. Less likely with more time in. And with pitchers, you have an added polluting factor - if they are only at each level for a brief period, the league's hitters never adjust to him, and he may be getting by more on deception and newness than his actual pitching skills. That won't hold up as well in the majors. So you may, again, be getting a more positive picture than is realistic. The Sox have a good option in Torres, so there is no reason to run the risk of bringing up Hudson right now. If the best we could muster was Whisler, then, that might be another story.

I'd honestly rather try Hudson and risk whatever he brings than stick with Torres. This goal here should be putting the best option on the mound, and we all know what that is. Hudson started the year in Low A, and for a pitcher, his ascension has been absurdly fast. Pitchers take more time to mature and develop than most position players. Its not about what he has to PROVE in the minors, its about where his game is at in regards to how he'd do in the majors. Its possible he's ready, but, seems unlikely to me. Plus with Torres, he truly isn't learning any more down there, he's got major league experience now (1 game), and I'd like to see what he is worth NOW, before he gets so old that he loses more value (as I think its likely he is trade bait anyway). I'd rather go with Torres. If he stinks it up in a couple starts, and Hudson gets in a few successful AAA starts, then they can be flipped. And please no Whisler.
  16. So, Kevin Dubler was on a good run, finally hitting well, for the past week or two. He was playing every day, pretty much. But now he hasn't played since 7/30, which was a week ago. I can't decide if that means an injury, or what. I doubt its a promotion, since Phegley is in Kanny. Also, just want to point out Remenowsky's stats again: 78 K and 13 BB in 46 IP. .178 AvgA, 2.54 ERA and a sub-1 WHIP. And still no promotion.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 04:27 PM) See how funny/misleading/manipulative statistics can be? According to avg ticket price Stros are top 8. But the graph Chi Sox posted would lead one to believe they are the best bargain in MLB. Its not that its misleading - it just shows different stats. The graphs shows high/low price band, not average price.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) Not even close. Disclaimer: I don't know how accurate this is, so if it's off I take no responsibility for it haha Further, the Sox are 9th in average ticket price, and same rank for fan-cost-index, in 2009. So, top third in price, barely. The 8 teams more expensive, in order of expense: Red Cubs, Regular Cubs, Yankmes, Cards, Mets, Giants, Phils and Stros.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) Dipsh*t in Cincy has a sign that says "Wrigley Field South". Someone needs a geography lesson. Cincy IS south of Wrigley. A few degrees S of SE, specifically.
  20. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) The only bad thing about his transition to AA ball is that he is GO/AO ratio has dipped. In AA, it's 0.71 whereas it was above 1.0 in his previous stops. If he keeps that up, that will probably inflate his ERA because the next two potential stops for him are hitters parks. Still though, he looks like a great piece for our future. You have to be careful of GO/AO, because it is ALL outs. If he strikes out more guys, it will drop. I would rather they did GB/FB ratios on there, but they don't.
  21. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) I always thought it would be awesome to go to space, but than I watched Event Horizon. Now I think not. That should just teach you not to see really bad movies.
  22. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 10:16 PM) We all love what Hudson has done in the minors this year, however is anyone else concerned about the fact that he only throws a 4 seamer, but no 2 seamer nor cutter? I always thought that a starting pitcher in the major leagues must have one of the two moving fastballs in addition to the the 4 seamer in order to be successful. Makes it all the more amazing he is doing as well as he is. He'll get taught that stuff soon.
  23. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 10:34 AM) But which would you prefer? Me using the term limp-wristed or saying "bicylists are ***'s"? See, even I won't even use the "f" there, at least I'm trying to be as non-offensive as possible while still getting my point across. These competitive bikers DO wear tight spandex, after all. You actually think they wear tight spandex because they are gay? Because as far as I can tell, that is the point you are trying to get across.
  24. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 10:26 AM) You're not getting my point. My point is that I didn't call anyone out or anything. People should only get offended if they're called out, as if I called NortsideSox72 and said "You're a _____!" Or whatever. I got offended once when Duke Nukem came out and said I'm a racist in another thread, that was calling me out. But too many people on this site get offended over every little thing, even when their name was never called out. Sheesh!!!!!! Also, what do you think is more offensive? Calling some imaginary competitive biker "limp-wristed" or calling someone ignorant? Cause NorthsideSox72 is quick to throw the ignorant tag out at people. He said I was ignorant of the law even though I made every effort to say that I knew the law (such as saying bikers were discouraged from using the sidewalk). There is a huge difference between being ignorant of the law (like NorthsideSoxFan accused me of) and knowing the law but disagreeing with it (which describes me). Also, for the record, last night I was reading this thread at the dinner table on my phone, and NorthsideSox72's post actually made me laugh out loud, and my 51 year old mother asked me what was so funny. I showed her NorthsideSox72's post, and my earlier post, and even she thought it was funny and not offensive, and she usually gets offended VERY easily. I honestly think NorthsideSox72 has a vendetta against me that's bigger than the alleged vendetta Ozzie had against Brian Anderson. I always feel like I'm being singled out on this site. Vendetta? I can't even remember the last time I responded to one of your posts, before this thread. Anyway, your statement is ignorant of the law, as I said earlier. The law does not "suggest" bikes don't use the sidewalks, it specifically says that bikes be on the road, where they belong. Also, rollerbladers are pedestrians, they are not on a vehicle. Also also, you stated that most of the riders on the street are these "limp-wristed" racers, which is patently false - I and most other adults ride on the road where we belong. Also also also, you said you believed cars have the right of way, not pedestrians. And although certainly, peds can be stupid, there is a good reason why cars have to be responsible giving peds the right of way. So, I stick by my statement - your post was ignorant of the facts I just stated. That isn't to say you are dumb, which I'm sure you are not - it is to say you don't appear to know the law.
  25. QUOTE (RibbieRubarb @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 06:39 AM) Trailer for "The Lovely Bones" new film by Peter Jackson. I loved the book and the movie looks amazing! I can't see that preview here but will when I get home. I was recommended that book, and it didn't seem like my style, but I read it anyway. And loved it. Hopefully this will be a nice treatment.
