FutureSox will be interviewing Dan Remenowsky, Kanny's current closer. He's an NDFA who has put up surprisingly strong numbers across the board. For background, here is his AAP page. Submit here any questions you'd like to ask Dan!

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 09:25 PM) any of you drive a hybrid? if so, what has your experience been? *raises hand* You may even recall, I put a big thread in here before I bought it, showing how the math worked. Including in the tax credit and all else, I had projected a payback period of about 1.5 years, but variable depending gas prices. Well, 2008 gas prices were absurd until about August, so I actually did better than projected, and was in the black on the 4k difference in just over a year. Mine is a Ford Escape Hybrid, 2008 model. We love it so far. There are a few plastic bits on the dash that could be higher quality, they aren't too solid, and the car isn't terribly quick off the line, but other than that we have no complaints. Averaging about 31 mpg overall, which fits about right into the 30/34 rating that car is supposed to get. Be aware, the ECVT takes some getting used to if you haven't driven one before. Its weird to have the car not shift. Long story short, we have been in the black on savings for a while now, really like the car, and would absolutely to the same thing again.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 11, 2009 -> 09:08 PM) Another powerful outing from Renowsky. Anyone know what pitches he throws? I put together an AAP thread on him, that contains everything I could find (which isn't much). Plus control, velocity is a question mark because it apparently dropped his senior college year (but maybe is now back?). He now has 60 K and 8 BB in 33.2 IP, not to mention a sub-1 WHIP, a sub-2 ERA, and sub-.200 AvgA. For all the people clamoring for Dex Carter to go to High A, Remenowsky couldn't put up much better numbers to ask for the same thing. also, if anyone can find anything more than I did on this guy, please feel free to add it to his AAP thread.

Cole hitting .412 w/ 6 HR in his last 10 games.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) He's got a real nice arm. He's basically their version of Alexei Ramirez. He's just dumb out there. What? Alexei has issues but plays at least a mediocre defense at a premium defensive position. Soriano plays god-awful in a weak defensive position. Alexei's defensive value var outweighs Soriano's, they aren't really even in the same league.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:22 PM) I think you might be the only one. Kroeger has a sub 800 OPS in AAA. Why the love? Looking at his career, knowing the back story and why he stalled a few years ago after being a solid prospect, seeing what he did at Iowa last year, watching him in ST, seeing that his awful April masks partially a decent season so far... I just think he's got something to offer as a bench guy, more so than Wise, more so than Fields in certain aspects. But it doesn't matter much, he's got no place on the Sox barring some new injury issues. When TCQ got injured, I would rather have had Kroeger on the team than Wise, but that was a different scenario at the time.
-
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I think it says more about Kroeger's outfield ability (or lack of). Learning to play first base is probably his best shot of making it to the majors. If he can learn to play 1B competently, he can be somewhat like a Ross Gload type player, but lower average and more power. 1B/OF LH hitting guy for the bench. Which isn't really something the Sox need ATM, but next year they might.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) bahahaha I knew Berlusconi was bad but not THAT bad. That's my kinda guy. He's an Italian politician.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) No one's dumping Josh Fields for Josh Kroeger. Yeah, they are not seen as the same, plus they have different position sets. Both can play 1B and hit DH, but Kroeger is a corner OF backup, and Fields is primarily a 3B. I actually think Kroeger could hit better than Fields right now probably, but the team doesn't need a corner OF / 1B guy with Quentin coming back.
-
QUOTE (Faztradamus @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) Can we trade him for Cleveland's Gatorade machine? Welcome to the Board! Gatorade is good, but we may then have to sell it to the Cubs, they seem to need a spare ready at all times.

QUOTE (CSF @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) Baseball America is also wondering why Carter hasn't been moved up: From their Hot Sheet: I've said before, Kanny has a whole pile of pitchers who look like they have nothing left to prove in Low A. Dex Carter is probably #1 on that list, certainly among starters, but he's not the only one. Not enough room to move them all up. By the way, the W-S rotation is: Anthony Carter, 23 (who seems to be right where he should be right now, not promotion-ready) Johnnie Lowe, 24 (same, not promotable, probably not a prospect though, but doing OK as a starter) Jacob Rasner, 22 (who has been doing very well, maybe ready for a promotion, but no slot open in B-Ham) Gregory Infante, turns 22 today (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!), (just got promoted to W-S, he's going nowhere for now) Justin Edwards, 21 (just got promoted as well, and he's young) The only one in there I'd want to have Dex replace is J-Lowe, who I suppose you could move to the pen. No one there looks like a demotion candidate, or release candidate, and no promotion opportunities exist. So what do you do?
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) He is still throwing lots and lots of fastballs. So if its still 89 to 90 and he doesnt trust his secondary pitches, the same result will occur. This. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) I cannot even begin to fathom why anyone would be down on Poreda right now and NOT give him an opportunity to start. And this. I'm not opposed to Torres either, as a plan B. But Poreda should be Plan A at this point. And with Richard and Thornton in the pen, that gives Ozzie his two lefties, so you don't lose that. Colon should be plan C.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) I wouldn't mind seeing Torres get a shot on the 24th. He's having a great year. What's the book on him, anyway? If you search via Google on this forum, you'll find stuff - we had this discussion about him, maybe a month ago, and some folks dug up some scouting reports.

I tend to agree. If Q can come back and be pretty healthy for the remainder of the season, the Sox lineup starts looking pretty damn good. And with the pitching staff (sans starter 5) looking good, I like the way things are lining up.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) The Indians would want Gobble for the same reason the Sox did. Lefties are in demand. He can pitch in the bullpen and still has some value. What is a fair return is a question I can't answer. His leftiness has to be a major factor. Heck, the Sox have a handful of relievers in AAA that I'd think they would rather have, and could be had for near-nothing, but they pitch righthanded.

Also, important point - someone's level of education is not the same as their level of intelligence. Nor does it give you the depth of color in regards to various aspects of intelligence, some of which do not handle schooling well.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) That doesn't make him stupid, it just means he supports some dumb ideas. Even dumber that he tried to link it to fighting terrorism. lol. There is no reason for the average American to have a machine gun or any automatic weapon, honestly, and I'm a big 2A supporter. The only reason you'd need to use one is if you need to spray on a crowd and kill as many people as possible as fast as you can, that's what they're used for in combat. How many people need to do that? Military, sometimes police. And also people whose houses are getting stormed by like 12-15 terrorists close together, which is pretty much... nobody. So yeah, dumb idea. There is however the paradoxical issue that 2A was most primarily intended as a check against oppresive government. In that vein, as was stated in the Miller case opinions, it's natural conclusion is the protection of the most powerful weapons available. Obviously, this needs to be tempered by not only technology, but also simple public safety. And therein lies the paradox. So, as nuts and as intelligent as Keyes is, I can't fault him for making this particular argument, except for the silly terrorist angle.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) It's like nailing jello to a tree. I have never heard that analogy before, but will now be on a mission to use it in conversation whenever the next opportunity presents itself.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 08:59 AM) Where do people get the idea that she is intelligent? After reading and watching her I'm 100% convinced I could run circles around her on international affairs, I'm no economics expert by any means but I know she would probably have trouble keeping up with me in a discussion, and I'm pretty sure I know the Constitution better than she does. Oh, and I can construct consecutive sentences in English. She obviously has better political instincts than I do and that's about it. And I'm nobody special. She gets around this by mocking intellectuals, and people buy it. I agree. Part of that is a schtick of course, which makes it worse, because she's mocking the people whose support she gains by hamming up the hick act. But part of it is, I really think she's just not the sharpest crayon in the box. I think she is charismatic at times, and I think she's gifted in the sense of social networking (she's the neighborhood gossiper who gets people to support her and they have no idea why), but that is the main reason for it. She really doesn't come off to me as some great intellect.

With Cook taking Allen's spot in Charlotte, they moved Kroeger from RF to 1B. Makes sense. Remenowsky strikes out the side, again, to close the Kanny game. Over 32.2 IP, he how has 57 K and just 8 BB, a 1.93 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and batters hit .181 against him. He hasn't given up a run since a month ago (June 10th), which is ten outings. When does this guy get promoted? QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:02 PM) Lucy heating up. Got his average up to .218! Both Charlotte catchers are, after both were doing dismally. Armstrong started heating up earlier though. I think the Sox were hoping one of those two guys would stand out this year so they could choose who would be the future backup C. But both have disappointed. Unless one of them can stay hot for another month or so, they've both pretty much punched their ticket out of the organization. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) If he doesn't, maybe the Sox are looking at Torres as a possible bullpen option. Not that there is currently any room right now though. That does seem interesting, to put Torres in relief, but that may have been the only option short of going to a 6 man rotation while Colon is there.

I like that we are still getting guys on base, and have 3 more innings against CLE's pen.
