QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 12:21 PM) I'll use as much freaking energy as I freaking please. It's my money, and I'll be damned if the government tells me what the hell I should do with. If I want a gas guzzling SUV, I'm getting me one. Cause you know what, I'd prefer to have a lot of steel between me and all the idiots on the road. And if I want to go with the safer incandescent light bulbs because I don't want the mercury possibly effecting my home and family, guess what, I'll use the incandescent light bulbs. And if I want to the AC to be on all summer, guess what, I'm gonna have the AC on all summer. Cause you know why, it's my money and my freedom. Go save all the trees you want, nobody is telling me what to do with my money. Just cause you feel like it's your responsibility to be greener doesn't mean it's mine and everyone else's. Hey man, you want to sit there on the tracks laughing in your SUV while the train approaches, go ahead. Fortunately, since the majority of Americans realize we're headed for disaster, the majority will support ongoing efforts to make your choices more expensive. We, the majority, feel it is OUR freedom to do that to you. And we don't feel badly about it.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 12:11 AM) Dan Remenowsky has 53K's and just 7BB in 30.2 IP. 2.05 ERA and .191 BAA, not bad for an undrafted FA. Anyone know what kind of stuff he has??? Those are damn impressive numbers. Welcome to the Remenowsky train. If you want some further background, check out his AAP page I put together. He's apparently got plus control on his full set, and good movement. His K numbers dropped his last year of college pretty seriously, as did his velocity, which is probably why he wasn't drafted. But our scouts picked him up from independent league, and I'd guess he must have put the velocity back on. He needs to be promoted.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 07:18 PM) I love the argument that it won't change my life anytime soon.... Guess what, I'm 18 and plan on being around for a lot longer. It's gonna affect me and everyone else at some point. I guess if your 92 years old or have a death wise, you really don't have to worry about this stuff, but because it might not effect me in the short term doesn't really please me all that much. In fact, I know my life won't change in the short term. It's the long term that's got me worried. Enormous amounts of debt, hyper-inflation looming if we don't stop printing money, bills that do nothing but tax me, government telling me what type of car to buy and what type of medical treatment I do and don't need, etc... It all adds for a very rough time for everyone. Being young, all the more reason you should be thinking long term. All the more reason to support alternative energy push.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) The funny thing is that if it is really the continued pressures of being one of the main targets of the national democrats, they just screwed themselves, because Palin winning the GOP nomination would have been the best possible thing to ever happen to them winning again in 2012. This is true. Anyone thinking that Obama or the Dems wanted this, needs to think it through. They would have loved to run against Palin, who has zero appeal for independents outside of Alaska.

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 06:36 PM) I deal with distressed businesses every day and to a person they say the stimulus should have went to businesses that can put people to work, pay their bills, get credit lines etc. Not to banks who hoard the $ and to companies that were terminally ill. I dont know anyone that got "laid off" that has been called back. Thats the failure of the stimulus policy. If people work, they buy, travel and spend $. Not enuf middle class people can get work-executives dont get laid off I think you are confusing TARP, which went to banks, and the Stimulus bill, which did not.

On another angle, anyone consider the timing? 4th of July weekend? Kind of adds to the weirdness I suppose. What she does the next few weeks will tell us if she just wants out, or if she is doing something to protect her political future, or if someone has seriously incriminating pictures.

Tyler Kuhn hitting .410 since being promoted to W-S. Who is this Serafin fellow at Bristol?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 04:31 PM) but even so, at it's face it looks like she's quitting because of investigations and media scrutiny. That effectively ends her chances of ever getting elected to a higher office than governor, though she may be able to go for mayor! This is just the end of a terrible farce we've dealt with for months. edit: seriously, look at her speech: millions of your dollars are being wasted, so I'm quitting, I can do more change from the outside. Bulls***. I would hope this is the end, but I doubt it.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) There wasn't a 7/2 thread. There is now. You can do this 7/3 thread, I gotta split.

Charlotte lost 8-6 to Durham. Marquez got rocked (5 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 3 HR), Negron and Armstrong homered for the Knights (Armstrong hitting .314 with 4 HR and 10 RBI in his last 10 games). B-Ham lost to Mobile, 6-2. McCulloch pretty crappy - 6.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER. Gartrell 3-4 with a HR (now has a .918 OPS on the season). W-S won a barn-burner, 11-10, on a Logan Johnson 2-run walk-off HR. Johnson went 5-5 on the day with 2 doubles and 2 HR, has an .854 OPS on the season, and is hitting .441 in his last 10 games. This from a guy who was just transferred to catcher this year, as I recall. If Flowers gets promoted or called up, look for Logan to go to B-Ham. A Carter had started and got rocked in this game. Kanny swept a double-header with 5-1 and 4-0 wins. More great pitching in Kanny as usual... Leesman 7 inning CG in game one, 1 R (none earned) on 5 hits, 1 walk, 5 K. Game 2, Kevin Asselin made his first start, threw 5 scoreless. All runs in that game came on a Jorge Castillo grand slam. Great Falls had an 8-1 lead in the 7th, blew it and lost 14-9. Four bullpen pitchers gave up the big bad innings, ruining a decent 3 inning first start by Justin Collop. Bristol lost 5-4.

This is not overly complicated, it seems to me. Palin's popularity in Alaska has been plummeting. The last thing she wants is to lose an election, or look unpopular. Cutting her losses to protect her image. I suppose there is a chance there is something brewing we don't know of, but, I think the above is more obvious and simple.

So I thought this was worth discussing. A new offensive started today (or yesterday) in Afghanistan, as we are seeing the first new moves under Obama and his military staff. So things may start shifting there again. In the last day or two, the US started a large new offensive in the south, trying to clear out Taliban forces prior to the August elections. This is the largest marine offensive launched since the 2004 Fallujah wave. Also fun to watch regularly, the Trib sent a reporter to Afghanistan to blog and write on the new progress (as well as the Illinois guard units there), so he provides regular updates here.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) Scheuer showed up on the Alan Colmes radio show today and Colmes asked him point blank if he thought President Obama cared about protecting this country. That is ridiculous. Even if you think Obama is a buffoon, I can't see how anyone in their right mind can think Obama doesn't care about protecting the country. That is just assinine.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) Yeah, he's one of the ones that sees Islamic militancy as a threat that's going to get worse and worse and that we need to do something about it. Which is kind of ironic since he also criticizes our foreign policy and says that it feeds into their propaganda as an unintended consequence. So I'm not sure what exactly he'd want us to do, it's my opinion that whenever we leave Iraq (whenever that is) that it's something that's an intelligence and special operations problem that shouldn't involve a whole lot of conventional military if it can be avoided. Yeah, I think people of his mindset tend to ignore that our meddling is one of the reasons they hate us so much to begin with. Meddling more may not be the brightest idea ever. I am more of the mind to get us off foreign oil ASAP, and put us in a position where that region has nothing we need. That way, any involvement we have is because we want to be involved, plus we'd be in a much better leverage position.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) Ok that makes a LOT more sense and ties better into what I know about him. For the record, Obama's strategic vision of the entire concept is much better than the generic Republican vision (and by extension, Bush's policy) we originally countered with (i.e., invading Iraq for no reason). That is indeed a lot more logical, though still over the top IMO. ETA: I was referring to the dude's statements, not yours, as over the top.

How many White Sox games have you been to?
NorthSideSox72 replied to Marky Mark's topic in Pale Hose Talk
In the buying tickets option, I'd think you might want an option for Season Ticket holders. I have been to more games than I could reasonably count. Been to minor league games, but never a Sox affiliate, though I'd really like to. -
QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 12:49 PM) Ah this thread is my homerun in the bottom of 9th to win an Intermediate Mens Softball League Championship. And you blew it on SoxTalk? Your coach is not happy.

A US Airways plane en route from Charlotte to Los Angeles, decided to divert to Albuquerque because of a medical emergency on board. That's a little unusual, but then it got a lot weirder. Some dude decided to take off all his clothes while in his seat, refused to put them back on, and became combative with the flight crew. All on the same plane.

Of all the things to get upset about... seriously, this isn't even on the list. For all the reasons previously stated. And I want to add... Robin Yount? Frank Thomas? You are talking HOF players there. Beckham is probably going to be very good, but let's not get carried away. I'd be ecstatic if he can be Robin Yount-like (relative to era) for his career, but that goes beyond "special".

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) On another sad note, we are going over 10% unemployment very soon. The June numbers were worse than expected. lost around another 450,000 jobs http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...id=a5utvno88qDM 9.5%, for now.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 09:43 AM) Better him than Coleman. Seriously. Besides, I thought you were going to be living in WI, not MN, anyway. Or did you decide to find housing in MN instead? -
QUOTE (VAfan @ Jul 1, 2009 -> 10:07 PM) It ain't happening this season, but the "solution" is for the Sox to get a left handed power hitting RF who is much better defensively than Jermaine Dye and hits better than Jim Thome. Then the Sox could re-sign Dye for his bat, which is still better than any other player the Sox have, and move him to DH next season. (The same player could also play LF or CF and we'd accomplish the same thing.) No way would I trade Dye or Thome. I think the most likely thing is for us to keep them beyond this season, frankly, on cheaper short-term deals. The real defensive move should be to put Beckham at 2B in the infield, where he ought to field as well or better than Getz. I'd even do that now, and give Fields another chance at 3B. But that's me. It's apparent it isn't going to happen. Does such a player even exist? If he does, he'd be impossible to get. Do you realize how high a bar you just set?
