  1. QUOTE (earthshiner @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:28 PM) similar styles but the lefty wins. Similar styles? They are about as opposite as pitchers can be. Broadway can barely scrape 90, and attempts to use control (which he doesn't have enough of) and a variety of breaking pitches to fool hitters. Richard can hit 94-95, has life on two fastballs but needs a bit more in the way of secondary pitches, and is far more athletic. I don't know of a single thing where they are alike, other than big toothy grins.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 5, 2009 -> 07:33 AM) Al Gore has made himself very wealthy off of this whole movement. Which I don't have a problem with. But I'd hate to see us go wasting money and effort on some stupid move like this, when that money could go towards... you know... actually helping the environment?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 5, 2009 -> 07:02 AM) Well by my recollection, Bush was labeled over his head from about Day One, and has been blamed for a recession that started even earlier. I guess Obama got a bigger chance in that respect. Did anyone really blame Bush for the 2001+ recession? That's pretty absurd.
  4. I'm usually all about the environmental stuff, but, this is just silly, and a waste of money and time.
  5. I think whichever of Miller and Stewart doesn't make the squad, is likely to be released. And they wouldn't send Lucy backwards to AA. I think we get Corky or Stewart in Chicago, the other being released. Armstrong and Lucy split time in Charlotte, Flowers starting in B-Ham. That is my best guess. An alternative is that Armstrong gets traded.
  6. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) You're killing me Ozzie. Hey, maybe you'll get some Gookie in the night game.
  7. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) Jesus, Ozzie didn't leave us much for the televised game tonight. Who of interest is even left? C: Pierzynski 1B: Konerko/Broussard/Myrow 2B: Getz/Nix SS: Beckham/Santos 3B: Fields/Betemit/Castillo LF: Wise/Kroeger CF: Owens RF: Dye/Restovich I assume they'll use mostly players from minor league camp to off the bench in the day game since that's in Phoenix. Hopefully we can see more of the backup catchers. That is a competition I am really interested in. Hopefully we'll see more Lucy and Armstrong, haven't seen much of them yet.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) Since it might come up again in a few years when Mt. Rainier buries Seattle under a Lahar and some of us point out that we shouldn't have dismantled all of our volcano monitoring equipment, the President nominated a new FEMA director today. No word yet on whether or not he'll be able to improve our relationships with horse-trading associations. How novel. A FEMA director who actually has a background in Emergency Management. Who'd have thunk it.
  9. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) They do this in the Boundary Waters, I visited there for an extended trip two years ago, wonderful...peaceful, not a lot of people. The answer is more limited access and MORE places, the fact is they're selling these places off and there are less and less of them. As for starved rock -- meh -- tourist attraction, nothing more. They need to keep these places on the wild side and not so overbuilt with pop-machines and easy services...it attracts the wrong people. :/ Exactly. The government already owns a ton of land that could be protected as wildernes, or set up to be parks, but aren't. Dozens of "Wilderness Study Areas" that you could promote to full wilderness, at very little cost. And, there are ecologically key areas that adjoin existing parklands, or seperately, that could be had for cheap in the current environment. This has some nice side effects as well, taking more land out of the system, thus increasing property values (which we could use right now). You spread out the use levels that way. And the BWCA is a classic example of doing it right - limited entry with fees to cover costs of maintenance.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 01:52 PM) True, but the more use, the more wear and tear on the area. They had to put boardwalks up over much of Starved Rock park because of erosion. Another good reason to protect more wilderness and green space.
  11. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) it might work as a temporary diversion, which the Democrats need. if it's a long term approach, most people aren't going to care about Limbaugh being mean to Obama. they will demand an improved economy. Actually, I don't think they need a distraction right now. Their support levels are pretty good. That economy and what it looks like in mid-2010, though, will have a huge impact on the 2010 elections.
  12. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) And for the record, I think there is something to personal accountability and we should all respect nature more. I'm an avid outdoors man, I go camping, fishing, hiking, etc...as a matter of fact, it's what I love more than anything else in this life. I do respect the environment, I don't just talk about respecting it. That said, I do what I can, but I also don't believe we're as much of an impact as we'd like to think. That is good to hear. I was just discussing with someone the other day, the subtle but important differences between being a good conservationist, and a good environmentalist. They are related but not always the same. But a lot of people talk about it, or expect the government to "green" everything for them, yet do nothing to reduce their own impact.
  13. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) the blame Rush Limbaugh for everything angle will fall apart. it's really a terrible strat. from an economy on the brink to Obama's major failures dealing with Russia it really appears that he is in over his head. I agree that it would be stupid to go after Rush. Let that jackass hang himself, just give him all the rope he wants.
  14. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) I thought the same thing, but not so. Apparently the companies accountant wasnt doing her job correctly, and as a result no longer has a job. Good to hear then.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) My solution isn't a very popular one, and probably not the most humane...but yes, if people reproduce to the point they can't feed themselves, than maybe they were meant to die off. The strong survive. It's how it's always worked. I feel our constant meddling in this is making things worse and worse long term. I feel that the Earth will eventually take care of itself in this case...if it wants to get rid of some of us, it will...and it has plenty of time to do it in. In the mean time, we'll do everything to make sure it doesn't happen -- as our human egos cannot accept the fact that the Earth doesn't need us, nor would it miss us when we're gone -- but we need it, and although I can't speak for everyone, I'm sure as hell going to miss it when my times up. This is all a very good argument for: 1. The fact that global warming is a result of, and earthly reaction to, human behavior (like a defense mechanism). 2. Being good conservationists and environmentalists, keeping our impact on the planet to a reasonable minimum, so that the planet doesn't react as badly in response.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) I expected this sort of response as this is a very touchy subject that some people are WAY TOO into, to the point they refuse to lend any credence whatsoever to the opposing viewpoint. No, I wouldn't say the same thing about gravity so please refrain from using hysterical examples when trying to make a point. Gravity exists even if a politician wants to fund a study saying it doesn't. We already know it does. I'm not speaking about politicians or cheap party-aligned scientists who sell out for funding and will say anything to get that funding even if it throws logic and reason out the window. I'm speaking of the fact that the science community is divided right now about global warming/climate change and our effect on it. I can care less about the political community, I'm speaking strictly on science, and right now there is as much science debunking it as there is supporting it. The world is overpopulated. Just because it's possible we CAN do something, doesn't necessarily mean we SHOULD. IE, just because the Earth can sustain more human life than it does, doesn't mean we need to "do it and see!" There really isn't anything in the vicinity of "as much science debunking it as there is supporting it". Just a few months ago, someone in this very forum posted a super-study looking at peer reviewed scientific pieces. And there were thousands that supported not only the existence of global warming, but specifically at least some degree of human effect on it. The number of those articles saying there was none was some very tiny number, or zero. There is no split of the scientific community on this - it is a unison chorus with one or two hacks interrupting from the gallery. And by the way, you were the one that brought up the hysterical example to begin with. Finally, how is it that you think overpopulation is having a negative effect, but somehow it isn't effecting the atmosphere?
  17. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) I know exactly how you feel. My wifes job bounced her last check, which caused a crazy spiral of fees and insaneness, which led to me and my wife fighting. Today is a mean little b**** day That might be a really bad sign for that company.
  18. I don't have the link anymore, but yesterday, Obama reversed one of Bush's midnight executive orders that undercut the Endangered Species Act. Decisions on development as they pertain to endangered species will now be made by the scientists who should be making such decisions, instead of bureaucrats. Bravo.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2009 -> 07:32 AM) Our tax system is progressive. They'll still make more money making over $250,000 than making $249,999 because its marginal, right? On income taxes, yes. But Obama is proposing changes to itemized deductions, cap gains rates, etc., that become effective if your income goes above that level. So it is theoretically possible that if you go just a little above 250k, and have a lot of itemized deductions and/or investment income, you could potentially make less at, say, $255k, than at $249k. That effect would decline quickly above the 250k line though, as the amount of deductions hits up against AMT anyway. If you have a metric s***-ton of investments with realized gains, then your tax bill will increase quite a bit, but those folks are already less concerned about actual income anyway.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 05:26 PM) Glacier National Park no longer has to worry about being glacier free in 2030. Now, they have to worry about being glacier-free in 2020. Edit...wow...the system edited out the guy's name. well, looks like we may need to change up our schedule in completing the Continental Divide Trail. We planned to finish with that northern anchor leg, in Glacier, around 2030-ish. I suppose we'd better do those Glacier segments in the next 10 years if we want to actually see glaciers.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 05:05 PM) The point is that those shouldn't even be options. Agree. Its amazing to me that someone like this yahoo John Yoo can get a job at that level, with that mindset.
  22. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) I agree. I loved that movie too. It's not supposed to be realistic, so the people who call it such are the ridiculously laughable ones. It's a graphic freakin' novel. Take it for what its worth...a badass action movie based loosely on the Battle of Thermopylae. Um... no, I wasn't taking it seriously. Obviously it wasn't meant to be. I'm saying, even as a fun action movie, it was an utter failure.
  23. Well, I have only seen a few video clips of him. But I've seen the stats he's put up, and I've seen multiple people who watched him play, rave about him. I personally think that he's simply seen as too old. But to me, he profiles like a late bloomer, and I have a strong feeling he could succeed at the major league level. I'm glad he is still with the club. If he puts up numbers this year in Charlotte like he did in AA and A+ in recent years, I think he should be slotted for a shot if someone like Anderson, Owens and/or Wise flops or gets hurt.
  24. There isn't a general Spring Training thread, so, I'll start a new thread. Anyone know if David Cook is in camp? Is he still in the organization, did he re-sign (I think he was a minor league FA)? I haven't seen him in any of the box scores yet.
