  1. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) There's also the fact that there was no tension in the movie and no narrative drive. That kinda drives a film into the ground. It looked to me like a video game with some really bad acting, and scene shots that were trying so hard to look kewl that it was just silly. I saw no appeal in it.
  2. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin I think of that quote anytime I see one of the many frightening steps taken/ideas thought of by the last administration following 9/11. Yikes. Exactly. That is why I used the word cowardice, which I think applies to people who choose the illusion of security over the real security of personal freedoms.
  3. It turns out OK, but, I see nothing funny about stuffing an animal into a sealed box, where it may suffocate, and at least ends up inhaling fumes that would do who-knows-what to it. I say charge the guy.
  4. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) Zelig, Alpha, Thank you for backing me up, I appreciate it. I do feel like I'm being targetted by NorthsideSox72. He always seems to nit-pick at my comments such as my post in this thread, how I made a bold prediction of Viciedo passing Frank Thomas' all-time Sox home run record, and how I said I was tired of how energy-conscious our country is becoming. I felt I had a right to defend myself because I interpreted Nukem's comment as an accusation that I'm racist, which I'm not because I'm a white guy and my girlfriend's black! How much more non-racist can I get??? Mr. Don... I am not trying to pick any nits. Your comments were getting close to the line, you are relatively new here in the Buster, so I wanted to make sure you understood where the limits are. You labeled people here as ignorant, which is not appropriate. And Nuke wasn't actually talking about you, he was making a snarky comment about the world's treatment of Muslims (in his view). Finally, regarding the comment about Viciedo and Thomas, I referred to your post as "silly". It wasn't intended to go after you, I just thought it was silly, so I called it that. I apologize if that offended you. I make comments like that to people all the time, as do others, but I suppose I shouldn't assume that is OK with you. By the way, as far as I can tell, you still have not read the MUST READ Thread at the top of this forum and posted your acknowledgement in it. This is necessary to continue posting in this forum.
  5. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Watchmen is getting pretty bad reviews. Not surprising, considering its the same guy who brought us 300, one of the most laughably bad movies I've ever seen.
  6. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 12:41 PM) DISASTER i have no hope, but some change (in the cup holder thing in my car) LOL, I liked this post.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 12:09 PM) i always that a sporting event would be a target for them, cause of the sheer amount of people there and comfort level people have there and with sports in general... For anyone who hasn't yet, I recommend reading Tom Clancy's last good book (before his writing took a serious nosedive): The Sum of All Fears.
  8. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 12:09 PM) I have a sinking feeling 2009 is going to be a disaster. Not only the stock market, but unemployment is going to go up substantially. I think you are right, though I think the equity markets, and commodities as well, will go up noticeably sometime in the 2nd half of the year. Unemployment, though, is a trailing indicator, and will continue to dive, probably. Will be an ugly mess.
  9. I've said before I disagree with Obama raising taxes on dividends and capital gains, and I disagree with other tactics he is proposing that will effect the markets. But, I have to say, I am starting to get the impression that a lot of big time financial market players (and small time ones) are deciding to revolt against these policies they don't like for selfish reasons. Unlike the futures markets, the stock markets aren't tied enough to real value to be held as quick to true valuation. The ratios and value numbers are just way, way under what the should be. I think we are seeing something I have said for a while was rare, beginning to appear in the equities markets - human bias having such a large factor as to put the markets far, far out of whack with fundamental financial reality. I think the next couple months will be ugly, we're going down a bunch more probably, and its not for any good reason anymore. We've gone past that. Fortunately, I think that eventually, the masses are going to key into this, it will be reported enough, and the markets will suddenly correct themselves in a big way. They'll say it is because of the first hints of recovery showing up, which will be partially true, but it will also be that they are covering their own asses for what they have created.
  10. We aren't really calling Jim Cramer "respected" are we?
  11. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) The real story is the Obama Admin using this to try and distract from the terrible economic news. This is barely a story, we need to stop talking about George Bush and focus on the problems we have no. Complaining about the previous Admin(s) does nothing. While I'm sure it was indeed used (partially) as a distraction, I do think it is a story. I think its important for us to know more of what went on during that administration.
  12. Its scary what the combination of fear, power and cowardice will do to a person. Fortunately, things didn't get this far. They went too far as it is, but, this could have been disastrous.
  13. Rudy Law in '83 was better than average as a leadoff hitter. That was 1983, not 1998, you have to have the perspective of the time. A .283 average and .340 OBP would have been pretty good, and 20 doubles with 7 triples is pretty good for a non-power hitter. He was also a very good contact hitter, striking out only rarely. But the guy also stole 77 bases, caught only 12 times (86.5% success), which is a huge number. He was a better than average leadoff guy. And yes, I confess, I'm old enough that I have watched him play in person.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) That's the funny thing about market mentality. Common sense can tell you one thing, but mob mentality ends up being right in the end. If the system doesn't believe, it is probably going to be a failure. The author is probably getting ahead of himself in already declaring failure, but I understand where he is going. Sometimes its right in the end, not always. I don't like that we spent as much money as we did on this "stimulus", and I don't like how it was done. I liked TARP even less, even though we did need to do something to soften the fall a bit for some banks. I just think that this stuff is all very, very complex in its effect, in so many ways. So I love discussing individual elements of it, but, I just can't see coming to an overall judgement of Obama's economic plans yet.
  15. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 28, 2009 -> 11:59 AM) I'm getting tired of how "energy-conscious" our country is becoming. This is even sillier than your statement that Viciedo will surpass Big Frank in homeruns.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) Its both, because its not as narrow as you (and others) are making it out to be. Bush wasn't responsible for the first recession, as well as Obama isn't responsible for this one. Now the recovery is a different story, and this is exactly what the article is talking about. In general, the Presidents don't have a lot of effect on day to day economy. BUT when they go out of their way to craft a trillion dollar law that does fundamentally change the way business is done in the country then they do, by definition, have a very large effect on things. W passed a very large package which affected the economy. If he had stayed out of it and let the Federal Reserve do its thing, he wouldn't be a part of the solution or responsibility. Obama is doing the same thing today. What big action did Bill Clinton take that changed things? Its pretty easy to go back and apply individual looks at each situation and understand what the Presidents' did or didn't do to be, or not be, responsible for what happened under their respective watches. I agree with some of the individual points made in the article. I do think the system needs to work through some things naturally. However, the overall implication that Obama "is running out of people to blame", or the idea that we can now say for sure that some of these things are failures, are incorrect and way too early IMO.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:31 AM) http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123604419092515347.html I've heard a lot of people on this board, Republican and Democrat, tell us that the economy is cyclical, the President can't do much about it, Clinton wasn't responsible for the 90's heyday times, Bush wasn't responsible for the recession during his term, etc. So... which is it?
  18. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 07:39 AM) From today's LVH sports book: 7:2 to win the AL Central (3rd btw) 15:1 to win the ALCS 22:1 to win the World Series I remember being in Vegas in Jan of 2005, and putting $20 on the Sox to win the WS. Odds that year at that time were 30:1. Then after the season ended, I couldn't find the damn ticket. Found it 2 years later when moving some furniture, after it had expired for reimbursement.
  19. One of the reasons why I felt Obama was a better pick for President was that he had some understanding of the fact that it is in the best interests of the US to cooperate internationally whenever possible. The Bush administration showed us how much damage can be done to our country if we overplay the bully card. However, there is a BIG difference between cooperation, and subjection. The UN has showed us time and time again that they are not mature or effective or impartial enough to justify us giving up ANY of our sovereignty to them. I am not OK with any international body forcing themselves on us, and I am sure as hell not about to be OK with allowing an organization as ineffective and poorly managed as the UN to do so. Its not time for that, and the UN is certainly not the right body either. Someday in the far, far future, in a different world dynamic... it may be time to start down that road.
  20. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 07:22 PM) It's all fun and games till the games start to matter. Yeah! Then its... fun and... games... again.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) Just lost 401(k) matching for this year At least it wasn't my job. That sucks, sorry dude. But as you said, could be worse.
  22. Awesome, glad to see Donny Lucy in the game. And yes, it really is a big deal to see him back. Unfortunately, I think he's still going to Charlotte to start the year.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?g...seamlb_chamlb_1 Muchos gracias.
  24. Anyone know how to find the MLB Gameday for the game? I saw in previous games, people said it was there, but not linked from the scoreboard.
  25. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) He was elected because someone managed to get ahold of sealed court documents that showed the white guy he was running against was a little pervy sex-wise. Otherwise he was on a path to be trounced into obscurity. Obama should be thanking whoever released those documents daily for his salvation. Except that Obama was up in the polls even before that came out (albeit by small margins).
