QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) The slippery slope thing is the WHOLE point. What is to prevent this from becoming an all-encompassing program with citizens of all ages having to do 'service' work? Seems right now that there are a whole bunch of people in here that have no problem with the government telling them that their kids have to spend 100 hours or so doing something that they probably dont want to do. So, willing to give away your freedom for this? Where is your line that can't be crossed? Will you all feel that way when it evolves into adults having to do service work in order to get a tax refund? You don't HAVE to do the work, but if you want a refund, well, then you know what your 'choice' will be. And it is not far fetched to think it couldn't happen. Have you ever known a government program to STOP growing? Whoever administers this will find some way to expand their power and scope, and none of the possibilities are good. Drawing the line is the art of all politics and all legislation. We can't (IMO) be afraid to enter into something positive, like volunteerism, just because we don't want to draw a line. My line is 18. You are less than 18, the states and the US see fit that you are required to go through some formative educational process. I see zero problem with mandating that include community or civil service. Over 18, you are a legal adult, you are free of your obligations. You then go into incentivizing it, via scholarships, etc., just like with military service. Drawing the line is not that hard.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:19 PM) I dont know much about him either, other than he exists. I'm guessing thats what most people know about him also. I know a little, and just read a wiki about him. Kind of an interesting history there. One thing that stood out - he was the main sponsor of and introduced the 2007 global warming reduction act. He calls himself a Democrat-Socialists, caucuses with the Dems, but does not necessarily have a smooth relationship with them.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) I wish there were more people like him in government. Those who represent both parties and dont let party politics stand in the way of what their opinion is on an issue. Its funny, I never hear anyone say this about the other I in Congress (Sanders, VT). Then again, I don't know much about him either. I may have to do some reading up.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) Whoa Tex. No where did I say or suggest that volunteering was bad. Perhaps you missed it in the very forst post that myself, wife and oldest son all volunteer. Forcing someone to volunteer is wrong. Making it a condition to graduate is wrong. And how do you feel about giving scholarships for community and civil service, similar to the GI bill?

Obama giving his first post-election press conference right now. Markets dipped a bit, but are still up pretty decently on the day.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:32 AM) If a gay is ever elected as president of the united states, I'm moving. And those of us left after the bigots leave will be better off. Enjoy Iran.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) Keira Knightley I love her... She has very nice facial features, but she's built like a 12 year old boy. Ew.

QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Yep and it's gross. Natalie Portman in between the 2 Pirate's movies was pretty close. Natalie Portman was in a pirate movie?

QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 11:47 AM) You gotta be a -2 to wear that thing. Is there such thing as a size -2? That would be disturbing.

Alpha, you have taken this thing and carried it waaaaaaay beyond what is being suggested. Free labor for life? Its debatable if even the school-age segment is required, and there is NOTHING in there that even HINTS at requiring adults to do anything. You've taken this to an extreme as if to prove a slippery slope point or something, but you are stating is as if it was fact.

I LOL'd at most of this article... "Moderates to blame for GOP losses, conservative leader says" This guy thinks they need to move further right on social issues. Wow. If guys like this are going to lead the GOP, then they are going to be relegated to being a purely southern party. They can kiss control of either house or the executive goodbye for some time. Fortunately, I am pretty sure that these FRC-type folks are not in the majority of the GOP leadership any more.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) So children from low income families should just get handouts in order to go to college? Huh? Where are you getting that from? I think you should re-read my post. I said nothing about handouts. ETA: Quite the opposite, I said that income should not be used as a determinant for requiring or not requiring this sort of thing.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) If people are healthy and able to work, why not? They would then feel they were contributing members of society instead of just being catagorized as leeches. I think you will naturally get more poor and underprivileged folks anyway, as SS2K5 said, doing the volunteering for the scholarship. But I'd prefer that we NOT require civil service for only some people, based on income. That, to me, is a big step towards national indentured servitude, and that is not a good thing.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) Wait! Are you suggesting we make people work when they are being subsidized by the taxpayer. You barbarian! So you'd be OK with the requirement based on tax bracket?

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 09:15 AM) And so it begins...... Chicago: Arrests at Obama Victory Rally, Woman Yells "White [expletive], [expletive] McCain--you White Police Can't do Nothing Anymore"...Then Proceeds to Slap a White Cop. Much to her amazement, they can, and did, do something. http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2008/11...bama-rally.html She's an idiot, got arrested as she should have, and hopefully will be prosecuted for ag batt. But your "And so it begins..." line is ridiculous. What exactly are you saying is beginning? And who are you applying this to?

I am glad to see we are looking to emphasize community service or national civilian service in various fashions. I think we all agree on that. As to "requiring" it... For kids up through high school, I am OK with requiring it, as long as its not much more than that 50 or so hours. These kids already are doing a LOT, typically. But I think its a positive thing. Now, once they turn 18 and are set loose on the world as "adults"... then it should NOT be required. Emphasizing it by way of scholarhips and grants and loadn guarantees, and by supporting groups like peace corps and americorps, I am good with though. Very good with. I think giving people the opporunity to serve their country in ways beyond just the military, in exchange for help with college, is a very, very good thing.

I still don't think that a Guillen-managed Sox team will have a lefty hitter backup catcher behind AJ. Maybe, but, I doubt it. If not, at least Armstrong is upping his stcok. He could probably fetch a little something in trade (maybe to help a larger deal over the top), and if not, he'd be good insurance at AAA next year (especially with Lucy such a huge question mark).

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Something remarkable, either in a good way, or a bad way, seems to be taking shape out here. There have been spontaneous, unorganized demonstrations against prop 8 just randomly popping up, usually organized only through Facebook, with a couple thousand people showing up, happening here or in S.F. COuple arrests, the groups seemed quite angry at a mormon church for some reason. OK, so, if the church in question did indeed funnel money for a political cause, doesn't that mean they should lose their tax-exempt status?

Who are you watching tonight for E coverage
NorthSideSox72 replied to bmags's topic in The Filibuster
According to the Trib, the equipment CNN probably purchased to make that crappy, goofy hologram thingy work likely cost them between $400,000 and $500,000. -
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:56 PM) This is kind of ridiculous thing to go over, but assuming Obama has a successful presidency there will be a glutton of Democrats to succeed him. I wouldn't be shocked to see Michelle Obama running for office at some point in her life after Barack's presidency. The Republicans have a real problem with young, energetic people in thier party. I believe you meant "glut". Unless you were referring to a bunch of people wanting to eat Barack Obama.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:32 PM) Can't really argue with any of this. But lostfan's point is the main reason I think it's Jindal. He's WAY to the right socially, but he's quite reasonable and relatively moderate otherwise. Seems like the perfect guy to bring the party together. Policy-wise, that sounds like the opposite of what the GOP needs. I mean, that's what they have already been pedaling, and what we saw from most of their primary field. What they need is someone more moderate socially, and more conservative fiscally and intergovernmentally. Now of course, as we saw this election, the discussion is not entirely about policy.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) Lindsey Graham = sane GOP = not sane I have a suggestion. Well two, really. 1. How about we take the lead from Obama and McCain here, and try to keep an open mind as to how the parties will deal with each other with this new administration, before we go labeling an entire party not sane. 2. And I'd like to hope that we, the relatively knowledgeable regular posters in the Buster, wait to see how the cabinet forms up before we start yelling "PARTISAN!!!!!"

QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) I heard on the news that Lugar told a reporter he would not accept the Sec. of State job if offered. So its Kerry or Richardson.
