2016 Minor League Catch-All thread

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 02:02 PM) Danny Mendick to High A https://twitter.com/kevinoDandC/status/725034830333894656 Likely means Johan Cruz is returning to Kanny. I expect Lassiter to move up soon too. He's 23, he's clearly passed the challenge at the level, and that Kanny outfield is crowded with Sullivan, Adolfo and Rodriguez also there. -
2016 Minor League Catch-All thread

Jake Fincher took a pitch to the face in Ext ST. Tweeted his photo via FS. Had surgery, looks pretty beat up. Yikes. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 09:38 AM) Keenyn Walker is quietly off to a pretty solid start at Bham. And Nick Basto, fairly high round draft pick long forgotten as a prospect, is hitting the world in Winston-Salem. He's repeating there, but also not too old for level at 22. Just doesn't have a defensive home.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 26, 2016 -> 08:38 AM) It is very much the against the federal law of public record keeping. I assume you may be referring to the confidentiality of these emails, which is 2 different issues, and whether she broke laws there. Seems very likely, especially with what we've seen released, but that's still being explored by the FBI. All the rules I have seen, even in articles that are very anti-Hillary on the topic, state that use of personal email this way is not per se illegal (unless it contains confidential or protected information). ETA: That said, I think it should be.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 09:01 PM) That's not true that she was cleared. Or at least by anyone who matters. I mean it's pretty clear what she did was illegal. I don't think there's any doubt at this point. We'll see what happens though. Investigation still ongoing so I wouldn't say she got special treatment yet either. True she wasn't "cleared", and it wouldn't matter really anyway because she RAN State. But it's not true what she did was illegal, from what I've seen. What I have said all along is that, at the least, she showed stunningly poor judgment. But nothing we've seen indicates that what she did was per se illegal. I will add, I think maybe the law should change - no government business on personal accounts, period. End of discussion. But right now, that is not the law.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 04:54 PM) I was really thinking about not being in the lineup at all. For example, Leonards (2014 pick) rarely plays for the DAsh, but an org. guy plays every day. Who is the org guy? Montilla? I'm not sure Leonards is much more than an org guy anyway.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:50 PM) When is it ok for a politician to change their position on an issue, in your mind? This is just a single example, but I want to point out Hunstman as an example (ran for GOP a couple cycles ago). He flipped his views on gay marriage, from anti to pro. Said it was because of his friendship with someone who was gay. May not be believable, except here's the thing - he actually changed to a view that was very much against his own party. In fact he probably knew it would play poorly, especially in a state like Utah, or running for President from the GOP. But he did it anyway. So that's an example of a change where I can look and say, OK, this wasn't a purely political move to get votes.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:46 PM) I understand how the world works. I also understand when a politician will quite literally say anything to get elected. I don't respected candidates who don't have deep convictions on major issues, especially on a repeated basis. It's a thin line, but there is a key difference between a candidate who has strong convictions but has shown they can make things work with others, versus someone with strong convictions but doesn't play well with others. That's political leadership in a nutshell, really. Clinton can compromise I have no doubt, but she's slushy on her own stances going in which won't serve her well. Sanders has very strong convictions, and goes in with a positive attitude, but I am not convinced he can compromise. Cruz is outright adamant in his views, and I have zero faith he can work with anyone else. Kasich I think may be the closest to being able to balance these things, which gives him some appeal. Trump is the worst case. There is no core there, AND he plays horribly with others.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:17 PM) Obviously Sanders isn't a moderate, which is why I was assuming you thought Kasich was, since that would put him closer to Bernie ideologically. But since you said it's about personality over policy, then it's a moot point. They're both pretty douchey, so I guess that's a fair comparison. Again with the putting words in my mouth. It's not just "personality" (which I did not say). It's leadership skills, the ability to drive change, the priorities, the track record, the ability to work with people on a professional level, the ability to represent the country as a face to the world, etc. Lots of factors that aren't policy points, and they sure as heck aren't just "personality". But you go on ahead trying to pigeon-hole everyone.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 02:06 PM) I'd vote for Mitt Romney. He should just jump in the race at this point. I'd take any of the three candidates from the last 2 generals (Obama, Romney, McCain) over ANY of the current candidates, if given that choice. This is a horrible field.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) Saying that you liked Sanders and Kasich led me to believe you viewed him as moderate since that makes little sense in any other context... Sanders is by no measure a moderate, for one thing. Kasich, as I said, is RELATIVELY moderate for what the GOP has been rolling out the past few cycles. But I don't "despise" either one - I don't consider that to be about policy points, at least not purely.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 01:42 PM) You will have Anderson step in at SS next year. Fulmer will grab one rotation spot. May will take over for AJax. The only real question is how the team addresses the catcher position and DH. Cervelli is a nice option behind the plate, I bet he'll be a target. Edwin Encarnion at DH? Sounds like a disgusting middle of the order. Maybe Brandon Moss for much cheaper? They'll have options next year. I think it'll be interesting what they decide to do with that last rotation spot personally. Do they just hand it over to Johnson? A potential lineup of something like this next year is very enticing: RF Eaton C Cervelli 1B Abreu 3B Frazier LF Cabrera 2B Lawrie DH Moss SS Anderson CF May SP Sale SP Quintana SP Fulmer SP Rodon SP Johnson That's pretty nasty. I wouldn't rely on May taking over in center to start 2017. I'm not convinced at this point. Engel in the same boat. It's possible one is ready by then, but I'd go under 50/50 for that to be the case. Anderson and Fulmer have risk too, as any prospect does, but I think there chances are good enough to consider them a Plan A for now. I wouldn't say that for May.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 12:24 PM) Can't we dispell this myth of Kasich being a moderate please? I agree in terms of the general and historic trendlines, he's pretty far right. Just not as far-right as Cruz (no candidate in decades has been), and really, who even knows with Trump. Not sure why you replied to me on that though? I never said anything about moderate.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 08:01 AM) Well, the steaming pile of crap candidates for both parties this year have basically made that the case unfortunately. It's basically who do you despise the least? I actually don't despise Sanders, or Kasich. But Sanders' policies are just untenable and I think he's going to have a very, very hard time working with Congress (not that anyone is going to do very well with them anyway). Kasich has some appeal, but I have had a rising fear about his abilities around foreign policy. Trump, and to lesser but still large extents Cruz and Clinton, I certainly despise.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 10:48 AM) I also should mention Cooper does throw four pitches, FB, curve, slider, and a CH. He told me back in August he doesn't throw the CH much while relieving and the Sox could of seen something they like with it. That's one of those funny things about seeing guys in person only once or twice. They can sometimes be doing something unusual. I saw nothing but FB, CB, CH when I video'd him. You can see it on the channel. No sliders. Then he told you he wasn't throwing the change much later in the year.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 09:21 AM) It'd be great to see Coats get a shot. Although, I'd be nervous to move Melky to full time DH with how he's currently performing. I just don't want to mess with his head/routine. That's a good point. I have zero doubt Coats is a better defender, but there is a psychological aspect involved, so maybe it's not worth the risk. Or maybe you do it only some games, or whatever.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 24, 2016 -> 09:59 AM) Matt Cooper still looks interesting to me. I guess he's old for A ball, but after pitching only in relief his first 2 years in the org (and striking out a ton), he's now in the rotation and still striking out a lot of batters. More on Cooper in his profile, if you want to read it (some video links in there too). I was one of the people "on him", but even I didn't anticipate seeing him become a starter. My guess is, this is the reliever-working-as-starter to get innings thing, more than anything else. But that is ONLY my guess, I don't know that. If I see him when I go down there in June, I'll ask him.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 23, 2016 -> 08:08 PM) North, I notice that even in A ball, the manager players some org. guys ahead of younger guys whom I would assume are prospects. Do you know why? i guess you can get lucky with an org guy once in a while (see the Braves 3B) but it seems odd in A ball. With the Sox, what I've been told is, they usually dictate the top 3 players in the lineup. The manager then has discretion on how to order the others. I am sure that is not a hard and fast rule, more a "this is usually what we do" thing. Jacob May has been hitting 9th, despite being a real prospect, for example. I think that's being done because he's very challenged at AAA and they want to bring him a long with less pressure. It depends on the case of course.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 25, 2016 -> 08:28 AM) Agreed. And I don't know anything about his defense, but I'm sure he is an upgrade over Melky improving the team even more. If you want to learn about Jason Coats, start here. In specific reference to defense, he's an above average defender on the corners, with a fairly strong and very accurate arm. He also plays some CF, but he's stretched there. Coats is the anti-White Sox outfield prospect. No plus tools, but very little in the way of glaring weaknesses either. The only real issue I think he'd have in the majors is, he's a little too aggressive at the plate (see his low walk totals), and pitchers will take advantage of that. He's been able to get around that and succeed anyway with a combination of quiet load, quick hands and good barrel control. Even with that, I think he'd easily outperform what we are getting from Avi offensively, though Coats won't be spectacular by any means. And defensively he's an upgrade as well, and over Melky, if you DH Melky.

Recap posted Sullivan and Lassiter at the top of the I's lineup are fun. Too bad their pitching staff has been (mostly) getting torched.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 23, 2016 -> 06:49 AM) We don't have one of those. The closest thing to that right now is Sanchez. Ishikawa hits righties decently. Better than what Avi has done, by a long shot.

Recap from last night's games (sorry, forgot to post it back here).

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2016 -> 10:16 PM) Nope, serious. All his peripherals have been great in his minor league career except hits allowed. His command might be too good and throws too many strikes. Saying it's something to watch, or a concern, I get. Saying it prevents him from being a big prospect is just drama. I hope he's still in W-S when I get down there in June so I can see him in person.

Things that happened across the White Sox organization tonight: --Triple play --Shutout --Cycle --20-hit attack by one team --9th inning tying rally --10th inning walk-off grand slam That's one heck of a night.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2016 -> 08:02 PM) Another awful showing for the prospects tonight. Adams gives up far too many hits to be a big prospect. Most posters, I'd assume you were joking. But as you're typically so dour... really? Adams has been doing quite well so far.
