  1. QUOTE (MAX @ May 2, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) I am being honest. We really don't need more tax. What we need is less bureaucracy wasting away all of the revenue. This country really sucks my ass when it comes to fiscal responsibility. War might be expensive but its only about half of the problem. Max- Please read, agree to and post acknowledgement in the MUST READ thread at the top of this forum, prior to posting again here. Its something everyone has to do. --- But on the subject, I do not see how you can say that war "might be" expensive, or that its only half the problem. Its INSANELY expense - Iraq has cost us a TRILLION DOLLARS for crying out loud. We could have solved world hunger by now with that kind of money. Or more seriously, we could have put ourselves on track to become energy independent, and dramatically improve our schools, with money left over. Its 90% of the problem easily. That said, I certainly agree with you that a lot of money is wasted by our inept bureaucracy. No doubt about it.
  2. Per White Sox. So they will indeed carry an 8-man bullpen and a 3 man bench for the TOR series. I really think this is a mistake. Better to bring up Bourgeois or Owens. The staff had a day off to rest - why carry so many pitchers?
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 2, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) The DP would be tough to turn, and anything hit to his right, he would have to have some pretty good footwork to get the throws there consistently. Yeah probably. Eh, nevermind.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 2, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) Since he is left handed, 2B is out of the question. Yeah, I wasn't sure how out of the question that was. I guess I don't see why it would be a huge hindrance , but, I wouldn't call myself an expert on the subject either. I understand the tough turn to throw, but thinking about being RH at SS and throwing to third on a GB, it doesn't seem so automatically horrible. Just a thought.
  5. I know this is something this board does too often, and its not as easy as its sounds, but I feel it should be raised... Given Owens' obvious athleticism, and his speed, his weak arm, and the fact that he was able to adjust to CF pretty well in a short time frame (arm aside)... is it possible he could adapt to playing 2B, at least part time? Maybe if he was on the team's bench, playing OF once or twice a week against tough righties, and then also picked up a game or two a week at 2B in those same scenarios? Is that just out of the question?
  6. Donny was carted off the field during the 5/1 game with what has been tenatively diagnosed as a disclocated knee cap. Here is a thread discussing it. I'll update this AAP thread with any further details.
  7. I'll be keeping an eye on the Charlotte papers to see if they make some sort of announcement in the upcoming days.
  8. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ May 2, 2008 -> 10:18 AM) Why is everybody so quick to jump on me for the 2007 comparison? I already listed why this feels like 2007, although I admit it is EARLY. Lots of solo home runs. No base-stealing ability (okay, CQ is good at that). No oppo hitting. Very few bunts (at least BA tried the suicide squeeze, props for that call from Ozzie even if it didn't work). TONS of men left on base. Lots of pop-ups. Uribe is still in the lineup. We seem to score 9 runs or none, almost like every other day. Yes, on PAPER it is not 2007. But on PAPER the 2006 team was better than 2005. Oops. BTW did anyone check out SoutsideIrish's cool link to the breakdown by Cheat? Check this out: our BA with bases loaded since April 15th: .077 COUGH, COUGH. How poetic is that? No one is saying the offense isn't struggling. And certainly, their situational hitting has gone into the s***ter in the past 2 weeks. But it was ridiculously good the first two weeks, and frankly was bound to regress closer to the mean. Saying this offense is struggling, which the 2007 team's was too, is true. But this lineup is just nothing like the 2007 one.
  9. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 2, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) True, but he's only 22, so the organization may not give up on him yet. Although, he was available in the Rule 5 draft and nobody took him and the White Sox didn't protect him. The sad thing is that he does work counts very well. It would be nice if, as a shortstop, he at least either hit well or played good D. He's on his third trip to B-Ham and he's hitting .138, which is pretty pathetic, even for a short timeframe. His previous stints he hit .208 (06) and .177 (07). And if his once-vaunted defense is slipping, what value does he have?
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) How is that question relevant to anything? That's my problem with it. Agree. Seems pretty trollish to me to even ask, even if there is some evidence he may have said it. Its completely inappropriate in a public forum like that, in front of families. If there is some sort of evidence he did, then I think a column or whatever on a website is more appropriate.
  11. I guess I'm in the minority, but I actually think that Wood is likely to develop into a good closer. I think he's perfect for it, and have been saying so for a couple years now. He needs time to adjust of course, but by the 2nd half of the year, I'm thinking he'll be pretty decent. Until he gets to that point though, maybe best to flip Marmol and Wood at least some of the time. Pitch Wood in the 8th, Marmol in the 9th - until Wood gets situated.
  12. QUOTE (shipps @ May 2, 2008 -> 08:31 AM) I know you have more of a chance to really mess up your knee if its dislocated than if its your shoulder or arm. Yeah, probably. Yikes. Anyone on the board with connections with the Knights? If so, any sort of status on Donny would be appreciated.
  13. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ May 2, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) Sorry, but this is 2007 creeping back in all over again. How many freakin people left on base? Lots of solo homers? No thanks. Bunts. Slap-hitting. Opposite field. Taking walks. We aren't going to do squat unless we start doing this. It's called f-u-n-d-a-m-e-n-t-a-l-s. Remember? Way back in 2005? Back then they called it smallball, Ozzieball, smartball... whatever. We better fix this, and fast. Although I don't know how you do that with a lineup of feast-or-famine big boppers. This team is 6th in the league and 9th in baseball in walks, and that's playing 2 less games than most teams to this point. They are taking plenty of them. The 2005 team won because of pitching, but secondarily, the many home runs they hit was also a factor. They were not a slap-hitting team. Big boppers are not a bad thing. And since when is slap-hitting part of fundamentals? I agree that going oppo is part of good fundamental baseball, and they haven't done that lately - but they were in the earlier part of the month. Hopefully they can get back to that.
  14. QUOTE (shipps @ May 2, 2008 -> 09:23 AM) I would think there would be some serious ligament damage if his knee cap dislocated. You'd think. But, I've actually known people who have that as a repeating problem, and all that happens after is some swelling and bruising. Hopefully no serious damage. I'm pretty sure he's Plan A for the backup catching job in 2009.
  15. Apparently, Donny Lucy dislocated his knee cap in last night's game, which is why he left early. From the local paper: Hopefully this is not too major. He was just starting to hit. In that game he had lined out hard to third, and flew out to deep left.
  16. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 1, 2008 -> 10:58 PM) Check out this real classy guy asking McCain a question at a town hall meeting. I guess he was trying to see if Johnny has anger issues or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOl4iT46Eec The guy asking the Q is identified as a former Biden worked who is a minister and a Huffpo contributor. http://iowapolitics.com/index.iml?Article=125056 Maybe John should have responded with "No, but I DID call your mom that while I was a&&-f*cking her in the breakroom in the back. perhaps that is what you overheard", or would that have shown too much 'anger'? Well, one good thing to note is that it appears McCain's "Town Hall" meetings really are open to the public. That as opposed to the Bush "Town Hall" meetings that were basically just groupie pep rallies. But on the subject... why do people feel the need to do s*** like that?
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2008 -> 08:17 AM) Anyways, here is my night with the President, for anyone who is interested... http://www.citybythelake.org/forums/index....post&p=9358 Cool man, thanks. Neat experience.
  18. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 1, 2008 -> 11:50 PM) Most every pitch is between 85 to 89 mph. Every once in a while, there is a pitch around 75. I'm seeing a lot of fastballs, with a split or sinker thrown in that isn't very affective. He wasn't helped tonight by Valido's cringe worthy throwing arm. The box score says 2 errors, but there were a few more that were called hits or fielder's choices. McCulloch isn't fooling many batters. I can't comment on location because I sit on the first base side, only high and low. A lot right down the pipe though. Valido is pretty bad. Lots of errors, and he's hitting .136. I think he may not be long for the organization.
  19. Highlights from the other games... Charlotte lost to Buffalo, 5-2. Of note... Owens: 1-5, 3 K (he's still at .299) Bourgeois: 2-4, BB, 2 CS (hitting .194, not starting well) Fields: 0-3, BB, 2 K (avg down to .247) Huffman: 2-4, 2B, RBI, R *Lucy: 0-2, was removed from the game and replaced by Paul Philips - don't know why. Hmmmm. Ohka (L, 0-5): 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K B-Ham lost to Mobile, 4-1. B-Ham just isn't hitting well as a team - Nanita is the only guy in the lineup with an average over .241. Of note... Hudson: 2-4 Cook: 1-4, HR (hitting .226, not starting too well this year) Armstrong: 1-4 (hitting .164) Valido: 1-3 (and hitting .138) McCulloch: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K Winston-Salem beats Wilmington, 6-4. Highlights... Orlando: 1-4, R, 2 K (hitting .207 in the leadoff spot) Colina: 3-4, 2B, 2 R, CS (hitting .304, .892 OPS, but he's a 29-year-old minor league free agent pickup) Allen: 1-4, R, 3 K Cruz: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R Poreda (W): 8 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
  20. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 1, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) these are some good comparisons. I might add that Pods in 2005 was a .349 SLG.... i guess most people here would say i have some lowered expectations, but I think this team could badly use someone who is even a little worse than the '05 Pods; by no means an excellent leadoff hitter, but someone to get bigger things going. It could be JO, but at this rate he'll be 28 before we find out. If this team was carrying a 5 man bench like they were in previous years, and Owens was around as a backup OF along with Anderson, as well as a PR and a PH against righties, then I think he'd add value. But this is a 4-man bench, and BA just seems more valuable right now in the OF. Actually, if Owens could play an IF position, given his strength hitting RH pitching and his speed, I think that could make him a decent Ramirez replacement. But he doesn't. Or, of the team had traded BA in the spring, then Owens would be a fine 4th OF. These are all "buts". The current scenario just doesn't support Owens.
  21. So, the lead regional EPA investigator for Region 5 (Midwest) was pushing Dow Chemical to clean up the Dioxin found in downstream waters leading to Lake Michigan. Investigations and hearings determined that the dioxin (a carcinogen) was clearly Dow's fault, and the sediment damage included the largest dioxin spill ever found in the U.S. Dow stalled and hemmed and hawed, so the investigator used her emergency powers to force Dow's hand. The result? I'm sure you could see this coming... She's been fired.
  22. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 1, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) Well this is the GOP thread... When I come across an article I like....I post it for others to check out. I'm not posting it in the main thread to put it up for discussion...so we can all rehash the same things... Just putting stuff I read out there.... EDIT: If people in the GOP sink or swim club...wish for me to stop posting articles...I'll will gladly do so. I for one like that you post these articles. At times I've condensed some into single threads for various reasons, but I like that people are posting professionally written stuff in here, even if I don't like or agree with the content.
  23. QUOTE (Soxy @ May 1, 2008 -> 01:26 PM) Congrats! That's super awesome! ^^^That^^^ QUOTE (Soxy @ May 1, 2008 -> 01:26 PM) And one small piece of advice: Don't go to grad school. ^^^And definitely that^^^
  24. QUOTE (scenario @ May 1, 2008 -> 02:06 PM) Sort of sad to think that the four pitchers we have going today have one win between them. And two of them (Poreda, Rice) seem to actually be having good season, but aren't getting run support.
