This is the Daily Herald version of the story Frank Thomas has plenty to prove this season, both to himself and the White Sox. The veteran designated hitter tailed off at the plate last year after missing most of 2001 with a torn right triceps and has been dismissed as a washed-up talent in many baseball circles. Thomas looked a lot like his old, dominant self in spring training, batting .385 with 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 14 RBI, but he has struggled during the regular season. Mired in a 3-for-18 slump that has dropped his batting average to .222, Thomas was held out of the lineup Sunday. He took the move in stride and again said he'll be teaming up with old hitting coach Walt Hriniak at U.S. Cellular Field. "We'll work this week,'' Thomas said. "He wants to help and he knows how to make me click. When we get together, everything clicks.'' Hriniak, a gruff, no-nonsense instructor, was the White Sox' hitting coach when Thomas came up in 1990. Hriniak was fired after the '95 season and has been out of baseball since. "He still watches the tapes and he knows what's going on,'' Thomas said. "He's bored. He's retired now and loves to see us do well. I'm one of his last guys left, me and Robin (Ventura), and he wants to see us do well.'' Thomas picks up the travel expenses, but he doesn't pay Hriniak for his services. "He loves it,'' Thomas said. "With my style of hitting, he's the one guy that sees the holes, sees where I'm leaking. And he knows how to fix it quick.'' Even though the season is still in the infancy stage, Thomas is trying to avoid falling into a an early hole. "I don't care what it takes, I have to get better,'' said Thomas, who batted .252 with 28 home runs and 92 RBI last season. "I've got to do it now because you can't keep throwing away at-bats. I've seem it slip and that's why I want to get back with (Hriniak).''

i havent seen it yet. to bad maggs doesnt get the attention he deserves he is much better than PK where is maggs comerical. I would doubt that Maggs has an interest in doing TV ads in English. He just doesn't seem comfortable in social situations in English. Plus he doesn't seem like he wants the extra attention that comes from being a celebrity.

I am glad they hate us. To me it says that they are afraid of us. -
The definition of a save is the same as it was when Thigpen set the record.

Kind of a side note. I am really encouraged to see JM getting the guys on the bench plenty of AB's early in the year. I really believe that this is the deepest bench we have had in a long time, and I was worried if he would use it or not. Guys like Jeff Liefer just rotted on the bench and were of no use when they needed them to PH. I like the idea of any of these guys being able to step in and start everyday, without needing the first 3 AB's just to get comfortable.

I think we all learned a lesson with Joe Crede last year. Plus when you look at the struggles that guys like Kip Wells had from being up here too early... It really seems like we should leave these guys down there until they can't keep them down there anymore. I think it was a good move to bring in more vets into camp to compete for those starting positions versus just giving it to Rauch or Stewart for the #5 spot.

Unless he is injured you know that Maddux is going to pitch well. He never has relied on his abilities as much as his knowledge, and that doesn't go away with age.

My personal theory on trolling is I go more for the specific trolls and tear them apart instead of trolling a teams board. Most of the fans on a board are usually pretty cool, and have no interesting in getting into stuff like that. That's why I look for the fools and eat them for lunch.

This is out of today's Chicago Tribune. Sounds like he might have been misdiagnosed... The White Sox were stunned to hear that Bobby Thigpen, the team's career saves leader, needed nearly three hours of surgery Friday to stem massive internal bleeding caused by a fall as he was leaving a hockey game the previous night. Thigpen, who lives in Florida, fell on the stairs as he was leaving the Tampa Bay Lightning-Washington Capitals playoff game at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. He was listed in critical condition and placed on a ventilator, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Dr. Kevin Hirsch, a trauma surgeon who operated on Thigpen, told the newspaper that Thigpen had significant bleeding around his pancreas and kidney. "But he was lucky in that the damage wasn't so significant that anything had to come out," Hirsch said. "I expect he'll keep his organs. This was a terrible situation that could have been a heck of a lot worse." Thigpen, who saved a major-league-record 57 games for the Sox in 1990, has participated in fantasy baseball camps for the team. Former teammate Frank Thomas, who learned of the accident from reporters, called Thigpen "a clubhouse leader, someone who would lay it on the line every day." "He's one of the guys we were hoping would come back as a coach here because he's such an inspiration when he's in the locker room," Thomas said. "I hope he gets through this." Trainer Herm Schneider planned to contact Thigpen's wife, Keri. "He's the best," Schneider said of Thigpen. "Pure wonderful." Thigpen went home Thursday night after being treated by paramedics at the arena. He thought he had merely bruised his ribs. After his condition grew worse Friday, Keri took her husband to Bayfront Medical Center. He will remain hospitalized for several more days, officials said. Thigpen, who retired in 1995 because of arm and back problems, saved 201 games for the Sox.

Frank Thomas will return after being rested Sunday. But Aaron Rowand, in the midst of a 2-for-18 slump, will likely give way to fellow center fielder Armando Rios, who went 2-for-4 Sunday with an RBI single. "I'll probably run [Rios] out there Tuesday to see if he can keep his little streak going," manager Jerry Manuel said. "I still really believe that Rowand is our center fielder, but if this guy (Rios) is hot and driving in runs, then I have to go with him." Said Rios: "I'm not in a position to be saying, 'I should do this, I should do that.' We've got good players here and I'm sure he'll run out there whoever's hot. Of course I want it to be me all year. If not, I'll be ready to pinch hit." With the Sox leading 1-0 in the seventh, Rios stroked a single to left that scored Brian Daubach and moved Carlos Lee to third.

This is from today's Trib Frank Thomas will get to the ballpark early Tuesday, perhaps seven hours before the game's first pitch. Thomas, who's on a mission to end his early-season slump, will work overtime with hitting guru Walt Hriniak. "I have to get it right," said Thomas, who's batting .222. Thomas knows it's unusual to have his own hitting coach, but Hriniak served as a coach for the White Sox from 1989-95 and remains close to Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. So much so that the team will pay for Hriniak's flight from Boston to work exclusively with Thomas this week. "He's still part of the organization," Thomas said of Hriniak. "He and Jerry Reinsdorf are very good friends. They've never lost that rapport. "[Hriniak's] a real focused guy who's always willing to help. With my style of hitting, he's the one guy that sees the holes, sees where I'm leaking. And he knows how to fix it quick. "We'll be out there early and we won't disrupt anybody else. No charade, no secrets. Just work." Thomas believes his mechanics are out of whack after facing a steady diet of inside fastballs. "I'm trying to stay patient," he said. "But it's early in the season and you want to hit. I've probably gotten myself out 12 times in the last four days trying to hit that ball in. And it's impossible." Thomas, hitless in his last eight at-bats, had no problem with manager Jerry Manuel's decision to rest him Sunday. "He wants to keep everybody fresh," Thomas said. Manuel said it was important to give Thomas a breather. He might do the same for Magglio Ordonez next week. "Even though we have a day off [Monday], a guy really doesn't get the full benefit until he comes to the park, comes to work but doesn't have to work," he said. "He can relax his mind and watch a ballgame. "When everybody gets a day off, it's not the same."

Knotts did come over in the Mark Redmon deal.

There is no arguing anyone in our minors over D'Angleo. He has more ability that anyone. Miles is a likable player but he has zero upside. He strikes me as a Tony G type of contributer off of the bench at best.

I looked it up and opposing teams have only 4 SB vs 4 CS. I couldn't find a breakdown of which catchers were reponsible for what.
