Scott Boras' son got drafted? That should be interesting.
-
Proud backer of KW here. I've always believed in his moves and always given him his due credit.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) SoxFan1 you do of course realize you will be obligated to provide us with similar high-quality Sox wallpapers for the rest of this season. No obligation for me. I'd be happy too. But thats up to Knightni.

QUOTE (Nokona @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 02:27 AM) I've seen some people talk about it in the national media. Guys on SC were mulling over his firing midstory when it broke. I remember one guy on the 1st and 10 show saying we should fire him because he's put himself before the team and is too much of a distraction, and this was before his tirade in TB. This was after some random mention of Britney Spears or something. Little did the guy know (as if he even paid attention the the Sox) that Ozzie goes on these tirades to take the heat off his players for the most part. Do you ever hear the media talking about struggling players like Thome, Konerko, Cabrera, or Swisher? No. Because they are talking about Ozzie. He's a players manager and knows when to take the heat off his guys because it's only added pressure on them. But he also knows when its time for the players to take some of the blame and get it together. And thats the way I like it. When the media is talking about Ozzie when the team is doing bad and not the players, I think he's done his job just the way he intended.

IMO, if all the better picks are signed, next years top 10 will look something like this: 1.) Gordon Beckham 2.) Aaron Poreda 3.) Jordan Danks 4.) Nevin Griffith 5.) Lance Broadway 6.) Brent Morel 7.) John Shelby 8.) Jack Egbert 9.) Daniel Hudson 10.) Andrew O'Niel Our system is that bad. We could have 5 guys out of the top 10 being draft picks. Especially now with the Wilder thing, where guys are nowhere as good as originally though, or are way older than originally though.
-
Good to hear that he is going to sign for sure, and soon.
-
Beckham had a huge 2-run double yesterday and hit another RBI double today. He showed some good ability to go with the pitch, taking a fastball high and out over the plater to the right-center gap.

I played against 3 players drafted today, and I'm 99.9% sure I struck out one of the White Sox selections. Now, after doing a little research, there are a few guys I think have some promise and would love to throw some money at. Obviously Gordon Beckham is a guy you want to be your top prospect as soon as he is signed. Of the other guys, here's who I'm liking: RHP Andrew O'Niel: He was an All Big-Ten closer at Penn State and broke a lot of records there for relievers. He was picked in the 8th roudnd by the Reds last season and seems to have some dominant stuff, giving up only 1 earned run in his last 2 seasons in Big Ten play and completing 22 of 23 saves in his PSU career. He is regarded as one of the nation's best relievers, being up for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. He seems like he could move up pretty fast through the system and has been compared to Joe Smith of the Mets. Oh yeah, he allowed a TOTAL of 3 flyballs in 2008...all season. RHP Daniel Hudson: He is a strikeout machine, ranking 2nd all time at ODU behind a certain Tigers pitcher named Justin Verlander. Has pitched 5 complete games in 3 seasons at ODU and has good size at 6'4, 215. He struck out 15 in a game against Delaware and has many ODU and CAA conference records. OF Jordan Danks: We all know he has 1st round talent but the Boras factor played into him falling into the 7th round. A guy who can do it all, a 4 1/2 tool player as his power numbers aren't quite there yet. I'm hoping he turns out to be what we all expected, and more, of Brian Anderson/Jeremy Reed. RHP Steven Upchurch: We picked him out of high school and he has signed a letter of intent to play at Auburn, but we could lure him with the dollars. He's a big RHP and was rated as Alabama's #1 HS pitcher and #72 overall on Rivals top 100 HS players. He's a power pitcher with a plus changeup and has potential to be a top of the rotation starter. He was part of Auburns nationally 5th ranked recruiting class. RHP Dexter Carter: This is the guy I see Flash falling in love with. Apparently he has some "lighting" stuff, but with incredibly bad control. He's your Francisco Liriano potential pick. He's 6'6, 200 pounds and gets it up there. If they can teach him to get the ball over the plate consistently, he could be something special. Before transfering to Old Dominion, he was the 22nd rated junior college player. LHP Kyle Long: The guy is a monster. 6'7, 280 pounds and gets it up in to the 90s but he also has some huge power potential as a hitter. People are giving the Sox no shot to sign him as he is really bent on playing at FSU next season but I'm sure he can be lured in with money. He hit over .500 in his high school career with a .900 slugging percentage and struck out 100+ as a pitcher too. If the Sox could ink all these guys, as well as their top picks in Beckham and Morel, it would be a huge upgrade to a very weak farm system. And hopefully with the lack of a 2nd round pick, they'll have the extra money to sign some of these guys. God knows we need it.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 01:17 AM) What about after college? No major league team would have to worry about signability issues with me.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 12:16 AM) Whoops. Same draft though at least. Either way I could give two s***s if you want to take someone's kid in the 40th round. I have buddies that got drafted late in the game and I was better than them (it was just a matter that we all worked with a scout and the scout knew that these guys would actually sign (and they just wanted bodies). And no, I am not even close to good enough to be capable of playing in the minors (nor were these guys). In fact, they wouldn't dominate a softball league. I wish you would have told me about that before I finished high school. I could have sent you some videos and what not.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 12:13 AM) Buehrle was drafted after Carrie Schueler. OR at least I believe he was. Buehrle was a 38th rounder. Schueler was 45.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) You get the television gun or the one at the park? The one at the park had him either 86 or 84 with the fastball and 78 with the offspeed stuff. Unfortunately, that is what he was topping out at with the Dodgers. I like signing him, but really don't think I should expect much. TV gun. He hit 88 once, the others were 84-86, with 74-78 on the offspeed.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:01 PM) Broadway isn't very good. His ERA is almost 7.00 his last 5 starts. Loaisa was topping out at 86. He probably won't help much, but if he takes Masset's role maybe he gets lucky a couple of times. Masset is an upgrade over Wasserman and the long guy is used in games that probably will be loses anyway, so its worth the shot to pay Esteban the minimum and see if he can either pick up a little arm strength or somehow get by with some cunning and guile. They can always release him and he'll cost less than Jeff Nelson a couple of years ago. Loaiza topped out at 88 tonight, and still had very nice movement on his pitches. The HR to Casilla was bad luck, as it was tailing way in on his hands and he did a great job of getting out in front of it. And all this was without having any real game action in 3+ weeks.

I actually took a non-verbal communications class last semester and learned all about things like this. It's very interesting.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) Swisher was 1-4 with a run. Hardly deserves a He contributed to the inning of the year and hit the ball hard 3 times.

Never has a major league baseball catch make me burst out into laughter. Thank you White Sox for making my night.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:00 PM) No velocity on these pitches. I hate that we have to have Jenks warming up now. He hasn't thrown in 3 weeks and just hit 88. Give him some time.

Loaiza still has some really nice movement on his pitches.
-
You can't even blame Esteban for that. That was on Casilla's knuckles.

Zesty Esty.
