  1. That is horrible. My heart goes out to the family and any who have lost a loved on needlessly and senselessly to a drunk driver.
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 4, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) I loved Gareth Edwards "Monsters", and from what I read his sizzle reel at comicon last year blew people away. I havent heard that the script has changed too many hands, but it seems like nowadays that is old hat. The funny thing is, the Japanese have done so many silly things with Godzilla's story and we consider that ok. We hear a US director is gonna change some things, and we freak out. One consistent thing I have read is that Edwards wants Godzilla to be terrible event that people react to, and really have no answer for. I like that. Agreed that Godzilla as an unstoppable force of nature like in the first two Toho films is a better way to go than the campy Godzilla that the bulk of the films went with. The Heisei series films from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s actually did a much better job of portraying Godzilla as a force of nature than most of the original Showa films did and picked up as direct sequels to the original film and ignored the rest of the Showa series. Hoping this one turns out good.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 3, 2013 -> 01:12 PM) Really looking forward to this and Godzilla next year, I am glad that the Kaiju/gigantic monster movie is making a small comeback. I think Cloverfield and Monsters had a nice little hand in that I am concerned they are going to screw up Godzilla on his 60th anniversary. The script has been in so many hands and it sounds like they are going to revision his origin to tie into climate change rather than atomic weapons. I am sure it will be better than the 1998 Sony turd, but I still don't have a great feeling about this one.
  4. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) My brother placed first in the first round of the 2013 NHC (Kansas City judging center) for Fruit mead. Very Cool. If he sends me some I'll be happy to judge his mead as well.
  5. Hope it was a good one!
  6. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 06:58 PM) Folksinger, Richie Havens, 72. He was the opening act at Woodstock. Very sad news, I hadn't seen this yet. On the heels of Alvin Lee that makes two of the most powerful Woodstock performers we have lost in the last couple of weeks.
  7. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Apr 19, 2013 -> 08:29 AM) Storm Thorgerson passes away at age 69 from cancer. For those unaware of him, he designed the cover art for many of the greatest albums ever recorded with his most famous probably being The Dark Side of the Moon. Designed albums covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Audioslave, Muse, Steve Miller Band, Peter Gabriel, Phish and many others. As a huge Pink Floyd, this is rather sad news to me. Storm was a creative powerhouse for sure, but the majority of the album covers being attributed to him were actually products of his Hipgnosis graphic design group but Storm was not necessarily the principal artist. Even the Dark Dide of the Moon cover with which he is best associated was not actually drawn by him although the original design came from him. Another bit of trivia. . . The blue car Gabriel is sitting in on th cover of PG1 was actually owned by Storm.
  8. Well I hope I don't die too soon I pray the lord my soul to save Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live Long enough to savor That's when they finally put you in the ground I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down Mr. Costello about sums up my feelings toward Margaret Thatcher.

  10. QUOTE (chimpy2121 @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 09:01 PM) Worked the IndyCar race in St. Pete. Cool! St. Pete is where the research cruise took off from, down at the USF dock right where the race was set up.
  11. I spent 5 days on a small research vessel last week in the Gulf of Mexico instructing an undergraduate student research cruise. We taught the students a number of oceanographic sampling techniques including benthic dredging, trawling, plankton net tows, CTD, and benthic sediment drop-grab sampling. We caught a few fish and crab species I have never seen before which was pretty cool.
  12. QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 14, 2013 -> 10:57 AM) And in terms of high schools in the Chicago area, I know at least Loyola (Wilmette) and St. Ignatius (Chicago) are Jesuit. Ignatius Alumni in the house! Having been exposed mostly to Dominican and Carmelite clergy and thought as a kid, the critical, questioning, and somewhat more liberal Jesuit viewpoint was refreshing. I probably have them to thank/blame for my eventual flight from Roman Catholicism.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 12, 2013 -> 07:40 AM) Evil Dead getting really good reviews This is good to hear, I have been worried about a remake. Hadn't seen the original in years and made a point of watching it this past Halloween season and still enjoy it very much, terrible acting and all.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 13, 2013 -> 01:26 PM) I heard they are going through untold cases of Trappist Westvleteren 12 As the product of a Jesuit secondary education, I am edified that a Jebbie has finally made the Big Time.
  15. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Mar 7, 2013 -> 01:44 PM) wow didnt know that he passed. Saw him on TV about a year ago and still played well. Very unique sound out of his guitar. When you heard it you knew it was him. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Mar 7, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) My second all time favorite guitarist. Nobody could play like Alvin and I mean nobody. Listen to the album "Ssssh" and you'll know what I mean. One of my main inspirations to start playing guitar. He really was a great player. No crazy scales, just crazy badass pentatonic and you did immediately know it was Alvin when you heard it.
  16. Not Beiber, but still a musician. Alvin Lee, front man for Ten Years After and Woodstock fame, dead at 68. CNN story here.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 10:20 AM) Could you imagine fried smelt Doritos Tacos? Those would rock!

    Smelt Fishing

    QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) Fresh water sardines kind of. You catch them in gill nets that are run out on long lines which are thrown or launched from shore. They are deep fried while drinking large amounts of beer. Actually, smelt are more closely related to salmonids and pikes, and belong to the same superorder as them. Sardines belong in a different superorder that they share with anchovies. The lack of gill raker modifications typical of planktivorous clupeids and engraulids (the sardines and anchovies), and the lack of a physostomous connection between the gas bladder and the gut differentiate the Osmeriformes quite a bit from the Clupeiformes. Smelts are often anadromous as well, traveling from saltwater environments to freshwater to spawn like most salmonids. The harmonious combination of fried fresh smelt and large amounts of beer is not in dispute.
  19. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 12:48 PM) Correct x3
