QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 10:53 PM) By the way, "Because the bible says so" isn't a theory. Don't let Don McLean hear you say that.

QUOTE(minors @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 10:41 PM) Personally no I don't but hey I am not in control of what is taught an what isn't the Governor is and they have made it clear that evolution will come with an asterik More importantly, science degrees from Tennessee will come with an asterisk.

QUOTE(minors @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) And neither does Evolution Surely you are joking? Evolution by means of natural selection continues to hold up under scientific scrutiny and continues to be bolstered by it. Every new tool researchers turn loose on the problem ends up amassing more evidence favoring neo-Darwinian explanations as the most likely explanations for the diversity and unity of past and present biological systems. It's not a political issue, despite the fundies trying to make it out to be one. And for all but the most literal of "I didn't come from no damn monkey" Christians it's not much of a religious issue as well. Scientific hypotheses live out their useful lives and are refined with time or discarded if they are shown to be incorrect in the course of doing sound science. Thus far, sound science continues to add to the preponderance of evidence favoring neo-Darwinian evolution over any other less plausible mechanisms.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 04:40 PM) Shouldn't Flaxx have commented by now? I'm having my own growing pain issues with the move to the Intel chips. I figured I'd not have to worry too much about the under the hood stuff for the Director authoring I do, but it's proving not to be the case. I'm at the mercy of Adobe and the 3rd party Xtra developers to get new developer tools released or I will be in trouble with porting some interactive museum pieces I've developed onto new hardware. As for Apple playing heavy to protect its code, I'm glad they are doing it. The last thing I need is for Apple to lose more computer market share to cheap iron and decide to get out of the personal computer business.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 09:47 AM) You're right, they'd have a much better shot of surviving if all the people had to do was bow down to Saddam and kiss his ring, or butt, depending on how you like it. Saddam was gone almost three years ago. And we're just getting set up for a long stay.

House votes to withhold UN dues unless they reform
FlaSoxxJim replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 12:05 AM) On the other hand, is it possible that through efforts to bend the U.N. more to our will, we'll wind up splitting ourselves from the people we should be working with, and strengthening those we should be working against? Wait, you're suggesting we can go bullying our way in to impose our will and actually screw things up and make the situation worse?!? INCONCEIVABLE! -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2006 -> 12:50 AM) Interesting piece on the U.S's. construction of the "Damn these are going to be here for so long they even have a Subway and a Starbucks but they're really not permanent" bases in Iraq and the U.S. media's refusal to ask any serious questions about them. We will leave when the Iraqi people want us to leave. But we're the only ones who will know what they really really want. Case in point, who would have thought the true hidden desiire of the Iraqi people would be for the US to come in and create a situation where they are 64x more likely to die in an act of violence before we arrived?

Vote for only 1 song in the three way match. Bold your picks. Section 1. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan vs. Baba O' Reilley - The Who Section 2. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix vs. Street Fighting Man - The Rolling Stones vs. A Day In The Life - The Beatles

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 05:06 PM) My love affair with the Stones pretty much starts and ends with Flowers. My cousin had it on vinyl and whenever we went to visit, I always wanted to listen to it. Looking back on it now, no idea why. Flowers is solid, with lots of good Brian Jones and some hints at what was in store on the flawed follow-up, Their Satanic Majesties Request - only waaay better. So much of Satanic is not even listenable anymore, but there's still a lot on Flowers (Between the Lines/Aftermath in the US catalog) that I quite like.

The whole song is not Taylor, but the extended solo at the end certainly is. And supposedly it's a complete accident it got recorded. Supposedly he kept playing while the others had stopped but then they fed off of him and picked it up again. Nobody knew tape was still rolling until they played it back later. I love most if the stuff that came out in the Mick Taylor Stones era. There actually is a good Mick boot called Can't You Hear Me Knocking that is a recording of a pair of Chicago shows (one had Keith Richards sitting in) from the 80s.

QUOTE(samclemens @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 10:09 AM) is anyone still going to say that bolton's not the man for the job as UN ambassador to the UN? Yes.
-
QUOTE(samclemens @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 10:13 AM) i dont agree with much of hacket's statements, but i have to agree that the man was shafted. if he was in another state (MI, for example) i think he would have done alright. the man refused to be a tool of the party, and got run out. But if the rumors about there being incriminating Iraq photos wre true (I don't believe it fwiw), or if enough doubt/controversy could thrown his way Swift Boat style then his bid was doomed from the start. This may have been a political necessity.

You see screwed up stuff happening on the news all the time, but you're never prepared for it to happen to people you know. Good thoughts and sympathy to har family, though there are no words at a time like this.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) No it didn't...they sucked. Is that still cooler than being the suck?
-
QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 05:14 PM) But here you go. I'll nominate 35 so that everyone is happy. And then some asshole will chime in and tell me that I don't know what the f*** I'm talking about because Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, and Honky Tonk Women are nowhere to be found here: hammerhead johnson is the suck I kid, natch. But these are the top 5 Stones songs and there will be no debate on the matter. So there. Mother's Little Helper Honkey Tonk Woman Monkey Man Far Away Eyes Last Time

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 01:02 PM) Actually, I'm not sure it's your fault, the Washington Post reported 30 yards and the NY Times reported 30 feet when this first started last weekend. Yeah I went back and saw that too just now. It however does not excuse my braincramp in just referring to yards as a metric measurement.
-
QUOTE(Cknolls @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 12:44 PM) 30 feet and he would be dead. It was 30 yards. Ah-ha. I'm like NASA, I get English and metrics confused at inappropriate times.

Thome Intent on Silencing Doubters No real news, but he's saying a lot of things I like to hear and is expecting to get a lot of at-bats at ST to shake off the rust.

Nothing like twisting the blade one last time, eh?

QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) Ozzie's probably sick of Harold's constant yammering on the bench. You just can't shut the guy up. Maybe the thinking is that Hal won't fall asleep if they make him stand at first for half the game.
-
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 12:20 PM) If Im reading this right this deal f***ing stinks. I'd have to agree. Security would still be run by the US but it seems like it sends the wrong messages in a number of ways.
-
The only way it makes any sense to me is if maybe Raines' lupus is flaring up again and he is experiening discomfort that can be dealt with on the bench but not standing at first. I dunno. I'd much rather see Tim at first and Harold on the bench.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 07:57 AM) Section 1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles vs. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix vs. Baba O'Reilly - The Who Section 2. Street Fighting Man - The Rolling Stones vs. A Day in the Life - The Beatles Dude, you got every one of those wrong!

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 07:41 AM) Oh, there was nothing manufactured about it. It took quite a lot of self restraint to keep myself from directing a few well chosen words your way. Plenty of it is manufactured, and it's not just you YAS. Accidental accident, yes. Did a beer at lunch have anything to do with it, I very much doubt it. But when the Vice President SHOOTS SOMEBODY (even if it is an accident), for BushCo loyalists to come on and say, "Oh I just know the left is going to say something about it" is manufactured outrage. To say with disgust that people would "fillet Cheney" if given the chance is essentially saying he hasn't done ANYTHING (not talking about the shooting) to deserve the animosity dircted at him. But I understand your statement is hyperbole, and vice versa. Few people literally want to fillet tthe veep, just as I'm sure there are very few people actually literally fellating him. Still your statement conveys your opinion of a lot of the left. As mine does for a lot of the right.
