QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 01:18 PM) Oh, you are one of those self hating Christians . . . That would be a Roman Catholic.
-
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 01:17 PM) It is morally justifiable to act first to remove the bat from a person's hand before he bashes your face in with it. And here I was under the impression you didn't understand why some of us feel the need to take it to the UberChristians. Justifiable self-defense.

If I start telling people to "get debauched" you know who is to blame.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) That's because despite being a devout Christian, I hate Christians, and do everything I can to make their lives on Soxtalk miserable. You're so conflicted. Well, getting away from that left-leaning den of Admins and Mods is a step in the right direction.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) Actually, aside from the Gill Man battles as to who was the REAL Gill Man, Ricou does seem great, and is great in interviews. So sure, I am a Browning fan. Show off. Ach, he was sort of a childhood hero of mine, actually. When I found out the guy who directed Flipper (loved that show as a kid, go figure) had ALSO starred as the badazz from the Black Lagoon he was immediately elevated to hero status. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:44 AM) Yeah, tales of terror from the sea REALLY creep me out. I also enjoy William Hope Hodgson for these reasons. p.s. might also explain my crazy love for that guy in my avatar. Ricou Browning?

QUOTE(winodj @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) Pat Robertson isn't devoutly religious. By the by. He's a devout businessman. He's devoted alright. Devoted to those Jeez-O-Bucks he still manages to scam little old ladies out of. "That's right, you asked for it, remember there is a big difference between kneeling down and bending over . . ." --FZ He's Got Twenty Million Dollars In his Heavenly Bank Account . . . All from those chumps who was Born again Oh yeah, oh yeah He's got seven limousines And a private plane . . . All for the use of his Special Friends Oh yeah, oh yeah He's got thousand-dollar suits And a Wembley Tie . . . Girls love to stroke it While he's on the phone Oh yeah, oh yeah At the House of Representatives He's a groovy guy . . . When he Gives Thanks He is not alone . . . Hey, dig me – I'm a left-leaning jerk being unfair and intolerant of someone who's obviously a deeply spiritual man of God.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) Hey, I'm just going by what I have been told. I said, I've never had the cockroach of the sea in any way shape or form, and I fully plan to go to my grave having never had it. I have a strange hatred for anything that lives in the water, as far as meals go. It may be part of the reason I love HP Lovecraft. Aha! I think we've uncovered the root of both the aversion to seafood AND the love of Big Monster flicks...

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:28 AM) I think y'all need to reevaluate your personal relationships and understand that the love of a woman, and all she gives you, is far more important than any baseball team or internet site. We should all treasure, love, and honor our significant others. The wife posting as you again, Tex?

QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) I think it's being married to you that's the source of considerable friction. True that.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) So what is lobster really like from someone who's never had it before? !!!*** Do you mean you've never had Homarus (Maine) lobster, or and lobster in general? Down in the Disneyland of seafood?!? In NSW I know I had at least two different kinds of slipper lobsters and a blue-clawed Pacific lobster as well as some big-ass yabbi shrimp that could have passed for lobster. Anyways, don't pay Kid no atttention. A perfectly cooked (not overdone and rubbery) Maine lobstah' is heavenly. It is kind of buttery tasting because of the sweeteness and high fat content of the meat, but a side of drawn butter and a lemon wedge is standard.

I feel your pain. My Extra Innings package only works on one TV in the house, the one with teh digital box. Of course that's teh TV that gets all thestuff my wife wants to watch diring the games and so my monopolizing of the TV during baseball season has been the source of considerable friction. Watching the spectacular Freddie and Santana pitcher's duel the other night, my wife complained that "There's nothing happening" and "why can't we switch to something else?"!!! SnB, do you think your girlfiend can give my wife a call and tell her how things are supposed to work?

QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) I was the only born - male or female. You mean you can't tell which?

QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 09:46 AM) OK. Kill all male first born! Energy from biomass! There you go.

QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 26, 2005 -> 09:26 AM) Yeah, like saying we should force people to stop having kids and live in a Socialistic society. Exactly that. Outrage at the suggestion that global zero-net-population growth must be achieved if the species is going to survive is the appropriate response for those who champion personal freedom, certainly. But it is also quaint thinking that will very quickly become obsolete as some of the grim realities set in over the next several decades. There are way too many people on the planet and it is not sustainable. There is a net gain of 5 people every two seconds. In the 4 minutes it's taken me to consider and write this post, a net global increase of 600 people has occurred. That means that there will be almost 88 million more people on the planet one year from now. So, no, by all means let's not upset our sensabilities by discussing possible ways to address the human overpopulation crisis.

An excellent essay. I found the suggestions about how we will come to lament a "necrotic" suburbia and our decision to go that route to be particularly insightful. I disagree with his assessment of the importance of future energy-to-biomass operations, although they will only be viable in certain locations. Pyrolysis is a more promising production method than the older biogenic means of fermenting 'biogas', and the input issues regarding fertilizers are obviated if we harvest seaweed as the biomas source. Twenty years from now we'll probably have pyrolysis factory ships permanently out in the Sargasso Sea harvesting Sargassum to convert into burnable fuel. Of course none of that can be done on a scale sufficient to replace much of the lost oil production, and it won't solve environmental issues since these fuels will still be combusted in order to release energy. Hopefully somebody also gets serious about looking into the feasibility of OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) in addition to fuel cell and renewable alternative energy sources. But, largely I agree with the essay. Things will be very different for upcoming generations.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 25, 2005 -> 04:05 PM) I found the Mexican equivalent that is also great after a number of beers. Tacos Nortenos. Basically they sit on greasy corn tortillas, add bistek (chopped steak), cilantro, and onions. Some places add white cheese. Grease, beef, onions. Same as a slider. The corn tortillas are small, usually 2 bites if drinking, 3 if not. Added bonus, my favorite place also has a liquor license. I love that crumbly white Mexican cheese (queso fresca?). I can sit and eat a pound of it and think nothing of it.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 25, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) I've never understood the appeal of those nasty little things. People seem to just live and die for them, but they never did anything for me. I am about to give them another whirl though. The final attempt to find the "charm". Not me, I love 'em. But they don't make the Chicago-specific list even though they're a Chicago mainstay. The first White Castle was opened in Witchita, Kansas.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 25, 2005 -> 01:11 PM) The worst part is the first minute, than it goes numb and you hardly feel anything. I think that is the 'birds and bees' talk mothers used to give their dughters in the 1950s.
