  1. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 04:20 PM) Well hopefully for their sake that should change when they move to Intel technology for their PC base. They should have used a standard chip set from the get-go, but that was Jobs screwing Woz around and withholding money on the Atari Breakout development deal. Since he had no money, Woz couldn't afford an 8080 processor when he was cobbling together the mac in his garage and had to go with something cheaper. Possible the single biggest f***-up in personal computer history. :headshake
  2. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 03:48 PM) The deep dish pizza pisses my Dad off. He grew up in Chicago (born in '40 and lived his whole life in the area until 1993) and claims the true Chicago Pizza is an extremely thin crust pizza. But he says marketing and time turned the think abomination into the now standard "Chicago Style Pizza". Your dad is absolutely right. Though I quite enjoy the Uno's deep dish and Malnati's/Giordano's-style stuffed pizzas, they are not classic Chicago style. Cracker crust, loads of fresh mozzarella, good Italian seasoning in the sauce, and spice Chicago sausage, with the slices cross-cut into squares and NOT pie wedges – that's Chicago pizza. And I refuse to vote in the poll. Three-way tie, and the commonality between all of them is the good Chicago beef that is our hallmark and legacy as the former stockyard capital of the world. Damn I'm hungry now.
  3. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) but treason is treason, it doesn't matter how famous or anonyamous you are. Unless you're on the White House staff.
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 12:11 PM) And I already know with the parents my kid is going to have, she is going to be doomed to the same nerdy fate At least there will be sports to balance it out. Hell, my girl is a crackerjack at second base, and she led her little league team in batting avg. this year. I like t think it is because of superior coaching, of course. Sadly, her younger brother showed almost zero interest in his first year in T-ball this year. he doesn't look all that much like me either. Parhaps a paternity test is in order...
  5. I understand the sentiment, but certainly it is an over-reach. The McDonald's I had for dinner last week was clearly not in my best health interests, but I don't have a death wish. Similarly, most smokers fully intend to quit, know they are putting themselves at risk etc., But for smoking-related, alcohol-related deaths, etc., death is a side effect of the bad choices and not the primary goal (as it is in suicide).
  6. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 11:58 AM) What does "w00t" mean? You are so tragically unhip it boggles the mind. All of your coolnezz are belong to me!
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 11:16 AM) I chaperoned field trip there with my wife's upper level bio classes and it was really incredible. For you personally Jim, I would recommend it as a "must see". It is an awesome exhibit whether you are a complete layman like me, or way, way advanced in your knowledge. If you want some specifics let me know. Thanks for the review. My plans were to make Sci&I in a July trip to Chicago to catch some ballgames, but my plans unravelled on me. I was excited to see a similar exhibit coming to my neck of the woods. We also get a return of the Tut exhibit to Florida in January which will be great because my 7-year old girl is obsessed with Egypt and mummies and such at the moment. I think she's crepping her classmates out, telling them how the Egyptian mummy-makers pulled the brains of their subjects out through their noses and cool stuff like that. Yes, I have doomed the poor lid to a life of science-geekery.
  8. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 11:32 AM) Interesting CNN article Ah, there's the rub. That is much easier said than done. I'm sure Sony, Samsung and others will eat at some of the market share, but only internal Apple blunders can kill the iPod. So far, they have had almost a Midas touch with iPod technology AND branding, something they sadly never had with the branding of their computers.
  9. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=1060873 The arrival of the "BODIES" exhibit to the Tampa museum has been much-anticipated, and there was an earlier effort to keep the exhibit from opening because some people obkected to its content (i.e., plascticized human bodies and parts in various exploded views to display their internal workings). The exhibits are prepared in the same manner as those of Gunther von Hagens' "Body Worlds" exhibits currently on display at Sci&I in Chicago and the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland. Although the bodies were legally obtained from the Chinese company that does the "Plastination," the fact that no relatives of the deceased wver gave permission for use in this manner was cited as the reason for trying to keep the exhibit from opening. Getting such permission would be impossible, since most of the bodies were unidentified and unclaimed Chinese. Has anybody here seen the exhibit at Sci&I, and if so what were your impressions? I personally can't wait to go see this exhibit next month with my family.

  11. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 08:47 AM) I found out yesterday that I need a colonoscopy. Bummed.......YES! Please don't post pictures.

  13. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 08:22 AM) 'kay...we have three of you who voted "no". Let's have your reasons. Be brave. I have always wondered why on earth somebody would NOT be a donor, if not for medical reasons of some sort. Not looking for a "fight", but I am after a discussion. MAN: Hello. Uhh, can we have your liver? MR. BROWN: My what? MAN: Your liver. It's a large, ehh, glandular organ in your abdomen. ERIC:[sniff] MAN: You know, it's, uh,-- it's reddish-brown. It's sort of, uhh,-- MR. BROWN: Yeah,-- y-- y-- yeah, I know what it is, but... I'm using it, eh. ERIC: Come on, sir. MR. BROWN: Hey! Hey! Stop! ERIC: Don't muck us about. MR. BROWN: Stop! Hey! Hey! Stop it. Hey! MAN: Hallo. MR. BROWN: Ge-- get off. MAN: What's this, then? Mmh. MR. BROWN: A liver donor's card. MAN: Need we say more? ERIC: No! MR. BROWN: Listen! I can't give it to you now. It says, 'in the event of death'. Uh. Oh! Ah. Ah. Eh. MAN: No one who has ever had their liver taken out by us has survived. MR. BROWN: Agh. ERIC: Just lie there, sir. It won't take a minute. MR. BROWN: [screaming] MAN: Zip it up. MR. BROWN: [screaming] MRS. BROWN: 'Ere. What's going on? MAN: Uh, he's donating his liver, madam. MR. BROWN: [screaming] MRS. BROWN: Is this because he took out one of those silly cards? MAN: That's right, madam. MR. BROWN: [screaming] MRS. BROWN: Typical of him!
  14. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2005 -> 05:53 PM) Its a tough thing. The problem is if we let people have the right to choose, do we take it back if we don't like the results? I wish I knew what public support for an Islamic style government was like there. It is pretty high amongst the more observant Shia, but like you I don't know what percentage of the population that really is. It is important, and a positive point I think, tht as al-Hasani pointeed out, the compromise langiage on the role of Shariah wnt into the draft - invokint that Islam is "a" main soiurce of law and not "the" main source of law. What that concession would actually mean for women's rights, etc., remains to be seen. It wil be quite the kick in the pants if it turns out we're just getting another Iran for all our trouble.
  15. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 22, 2005 -> 12:23 PM) Wasn't there once an old idea of if you wanted to improve your countries economy you just start a war? So...what the f*** is happening here? Is it because this war isn't creating any jobs at all? Do we need cars to run on gas. My buddy, who is a chemist, claims they can make a car that runs on hydrogen. But there is no money to be had for the oil tycoons in that, so we will never see it. He says the hybrids are bulls*** because it is technology that doesn't need to be there. Watch out, Kid, you're almost sounding... political?!? Better go lie down, or better yet have a beer until it passes. There was a pretty good discussion on here a couple weeks back on hybrid vs. hydrogen, and the need for hybrids as a stopgap solution while many serious roadblocks to economically feasible and truly renewable hydrogen power are hopefully addressed. My wife and I figured out that we're now spending $500 a month between our drives to and from work.

  17. I have been an organ doner since I first got my license at 16. Hopefully that makes up for my bad veins and my inability to give blood.

    Blood Donor

    QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Aug 22, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) I usually donate when there's a blood drive (every two months or so at a church near my apartment). But I have bad veins and very low blood pressure, so often I'll get sent away with a bruise and no blood taken. I'm the same way and I don't really get why it is. I tried to donate every year or so, and my vein collapses or something and it takes 30 minutes to fill half a bag and they usually cut me loose and throw out the bag. The last time I tried was 9/12/01. Waited along with everybody else for like 5 hours, finally got in, and exactly the same result. I just took up a spot for a half hour and they only got a half-bag that I'm sure they threw out. I got really frustrated, cursed my veins and haven't tried again. I honestly feel very guilty about not being able to be a regular doner.
  19. QUOTE(The Critic @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 05:34 PM) I kinda wish I didn't know that song. That is SO not my kind of music. Aaach?!? Despite Robbie being Canadian-born, the Band is an American treasure. Turn in your headphones!
  20. QUOTE(winodj @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 04:41 PM) If I'm not mistaken, the big fear is that the Shia will get an autonomous state to the south, the Kurds get one to the north. All the oil money in the country is kept more under the control of each of these areas, leaving the Sunni area - which would not be an autonomous area - to suffer from a lack of funds to develop their infrastructure. Plus, this model would allow for the Shia and Kurds to make rules for the Sunni center that would be "exempt" for autonomous regions that would consist of the rest of the country. At least, that's what I got from a few minutes of NPR this week. Yep, that seems to be the size of it. Without an oil revenue sharing system that gives the Sunni region of the country some development money they'll have a hard time. As well, they would have to deal with whatever national rules of governance the majority agrees to. It will be hard to find a compromise that they will agree to, but they don't have a whole lot of leverage.
  21. Man, that feels good. Let's rattle off a few more now!

  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2005 -> 12:49 PM) The Sunnis refuse to be a part of anything that doesn't involve them staying in power like they did in the days under Saddam. Back then they had a practical monopoly over all of the power and the resources of the country. Now that it looks like they are going to be at least a minority in the power structure, they have resorted to guerilla warfare on their fellow countrymen, and have refused to be a part of elections and of any constitution that doesn't keep their power. Really there isn't much that is going to change here. The sun has set on power monopoly of the Sunni elite minority to be sure, but none of the Sunni representatives in parliment honestly think they're going to remain in power. They do hope for fair representation in a new Iraq, and they understandably fear retribution once they lose all to the Shia majority. Blame shortsightedness for not thinking there might be some serious issues between the former Sunni power wielders and the Kurds and Shia. Simply letting the chiips fall where they may in the new power balance is just formenting civil war. If we approach Iraq like it is a vaccuum, then it's an understandable strategy to allow the Shia majority to put together a government in which they hold all or most of the cards (the denials of political scholars notwithstanding, sometimes 'democracy' does equate to majority rule). But in the broader view, the dangers of unchecked power in the hands of a religious Shia majority ar eapparent. Simply capitulating to the Shia majority will set the stage for a quick warming in Iraq-Iran relations. They are already in broad discussions about their shared futures, with Iran already urging that one of the first things an established Shia-controlled Iraqi government should do is thanks America and show them the door. It will be something if several years out the new-look Iraq looks less like the Amreican-style democracy we are hoping to introduce and more like their neighbors still on the Axis of Evil list. It's not impossible for us to see the eventual emergence of an Islamist state in Iraq if/when the experiment in democracy fails. That is, unless, our policy becomes to completely equate Islamist Muslim states and terrorism and declare war on them all in the next phase of the GWoT.
