  1. QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:57 PM) There's this thing called Hurricane Katrina. I know it sucks for us with this price, but at least our homes and cities aren't destroyed. Still sounds like price gouging, which is illegal. Anybody who sees some astronomic spot price jumps ahead of the other gas stations around should make not of it so that they can report it to the Atty General's office when the price gouging investigations begin in earnest down the line.

    QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) Bush says they'll have 24,000 troops in N.O. by next week, next week? Well, this is from the guy who always seems to show up a day or two late for national tragedies.

    Agreed, it is much easier said than done. A lot of poverty-level families simply couldn't get out, didn't have the means to do so. an 80% compliance rate (which some now suggesting will be revised downward) with evacuation orders is pretty damn amazing. And 10K + people with medical conditions or no means to get out did exactly as they were told and got to the Super Dome. It is not their fault it failed them as a rescue center. Right now, the lack of a coordinated national emergency response is appalling. People are no doubt dying where ever they are huddled up in attics and among the remains of collapsed houses. For the neighborhoods that are completely inundated with floodwater, response crews should have been going systematically from house to house and busting holes in the roofs to check for survors.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 01:00 PM) They've officially been eliminated from playoff contention(including the wildcard). Didn't they make that announcement around April 2nd?

    If she markets this device I think I've come up with a catchy name: The Wrong Shlong-Be-Gone® Dong Prong.
  6. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 01:01 PM) I just read in the Southtown someone stole the collection money from my church two weeks ago (about $2000). God helps those that help themselves?

    QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 12:52 PM) I pack heat. I don't own anything outside of a couple rifles and shotguns. I BRING THE HEAT! (I also announce my presence with authority.)

    I can only imagine how many times these terrible events have replayed. And now my very dark thoughts on the ongoing rescue efforts: Even with water starting to fall (thankfully), some of the neighborhoods were under 20 feet of water, so there are still trapped people going through similar horrors even now. Think of all the people that chopped through their roofs from the attic below and were rescued by the helicopters. Now think of all the people who likely managed to get up to the attic while their houses flooded, but didn't have anything with them to chop through the roof, or were to sick or old to do so. many of those folks certainly drowned when the water caught up with them. Others may have stayed above water, but were then trapped in theor attics, with no way to break out and no food and water. And no electricity in 90+ degree weather, forcing the temperatures in an enclosed attic space up well past 100 degrees easily. That's where the thousands of victims have died, and are in all likelyhood still dying while nobody knows they are there.

    Meh, my first experience with the service has been underwhelming. Seems like it will be very cool though. And, seeing how friends can freely share stations with nonsubscribers, on the off chance anybody puts together a station based on an artist input of Zappa, Rundgren, xtc, Belew, Costello, Big Star, Bowie, Material Issue, Aimee Mann, Beatles and then sort of happens to share the link to the station with me that would be tits.

    QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 10:40 AM) Better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it. I thought that was condoms?
  14. QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) I installed a similar device in the local public pool and I was arrested! How times have changed... You're not supposed to install the cameras in the locker rooms, Ribbie.
  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 08:58 AM) Ask me what that "rev." in front of Pat Robertson's name is worth. It's worth one hell of a tax break, for starters...
  16. Ah, here's the reference from the piece posted: So basically, if the 4% dissimilarity in sequence runs ands up amounting to non-coding regions ("junk DNA", although the jury is again out on whether there is such a thing), then the older dogma that there is 99% similarity in the coding sequences between chimps and humans holds true.
  17. It's actually 96% to 99%+ shared DNA, depending on how the comparison is made, so we're still brothers removed by a measly 6 million years. Yes, Science Rocks Hard! Science!

    QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 10:59 PM) I was aware of the old Cooter festival, but as yet have not been an attendee. Soxy, at times in college it was a cooter fest, and then during the leaner times it was more of a cootie fest.
  22. FlaSoxxJim replied to Goldmember's topic in SLaM
    Cooter is one of my favorite words - even before finding out about Grandma Cooter. Down here, we call slider turtles cooters. My kids have an aquarium with a couple of cute little red eared cooters living it it. I think my wife was getting annoyed that I would snicker like a fifth grader when I talked about having to clean up after the stinky cooters. So to try to appease her now I call 'em SNAPPERS!

  25. if Repent America's God really was looking to take it out on the gays then wouldn't he have waited until they actually arrived in New orleans for the event? I contend therefore that the fact Katrina struck 3 days early either exonorates gays completely, or proves that whatever narrow-minded and petty little God Repent America has concocted for themselves can't read a calendar and is just as f***ing stupid as Repent America is.
