  1. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 02:40 PM) I saw this on the front page of Yahoo! a few hours ago... I assumed there was already a thread about it... You guys are slipping. Don't blame me... my Britney fan letter arrived late this month and I didn't get the news... :puke

    Reality Bites

    Gosh, Britney Spears is going to star in a reality TV series. I never, ever, would have seen that coming. The shark is so far back in her rearview mirror it's hard to tell exactly how long ago she jumped it. Some time in 2002 I'd say.
  3. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 09:43 AM) Some times things have a funny way of hitting home. I, not 15 minutes ago, found out that my father has prostate cancer. Reading that article, and the odds that Cowley faced, kind of helped me put things into the proper perspective. Lots of good thoughts pointed in your Dad's direction, YAS.
  4. QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 10:54 AM) More evidence? Now, THAT'S funny!
  5. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 12:28 PM) The only time we've ever done good on National TV is in 2000. ALCS excluded, I presume?
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 01:23 PM) Send me a dollar, and you will know the true meaning of life Can you lie to me for free?
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 01:21 PM) I ride the south shore everyday to and from work, if you have anymore questions let me know. What is the meaning of life?
  8. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) I don't have a problem with that. Nor do I, as long as Americans will require the equivalent documentation to get into Canada.
  9. That is great news. I've always liked Joe.
  10. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:24 AM) That was one of my favorite books in High School. 20th Century French Lit is about all of the French lit that I can stand. Camus, Sartre and St Exupery. Hats off, gentlemen! Voltaire is pretty damn good pre-20th Century French Lit, but largely I concur.
  11. OK, Shagar, I've been patiently waiting for a grade from you on my 'Kafka's soldier as Everyman' allegory, but to no avail. C'mon, man – you're as slow at getting grades back to your students as I am!! Well, ok then if that's the way you're going to be. Just don't come asking for help when you need to do that report on Albert Camus' The Stranger.

    The Pope...

    QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 01:37 PM) Has there ever been any mention of who will be next? I have bets that Fox has a Reality show in the works for it. VOTE THE POPE! On Fox, Wednesday nights after "The Simple Life"!!! I'm not sure. It could well have been Cardinal Bernadine if he had lived. That was probably the best shot at an American Pope.
  13. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 09:27 AM) I friggin hate April Fool's Day. OK, who got you and how?!? Clearly, what you need is some Refreshing Google Gulp.
  14. Safe Travels to a better place. JPII.
  15. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 01:05 PM) I thought there was here too. Here's the deal...

    The Pope...

    QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 12:51 PM) I'd put Simon Peter a bit ahead of John Paul II The first and still the Greatest, eh? I'd have to deny it. I'd have to deny it. I'd have to deny it. Cock-a-doodle-doo... [/ex-Catholic Geekery]
  17. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) I haven't posted many true, but others do to balance it out. And I encourage you to post bad articles about Canada if you want. Well, for one thing, that stuff you guys call "bacon"... It's f***ing HAM Gawddammit!!!

    The Pope...

    QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) If anyone cares officially the "last rites" are made up of two parts, and I'm certain our resident expert FlaSoxJim will correct me if I'm wrong here. The Catholic Church tries to avoid the term last rites, because it can be confusing. The first part is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick followed by the Sacrament of Penance. Both Sacraments can be given at any time, but special significance has been given to that these as the person is dying. Probably way more than anyone wanted to know. Well, as the resident Recovering Catholic (took a wrong turn one day on my way to Seminary) I can chime in, but first things first. JPII is a first-rate human being that most of the world should respect regardless of affiliation with the Church of Rome. Of course I don't agree with everything he has said during his papacy, but if I did I would be a Practicing rather than Recovering Catholic. Still, I have an enormous amount of respect for him and agree his shoes (robes, tonture, etc...) will be hard to fill. As to Last Rights, I think Tex has part of it right and part of it a little off (real Catechism Catholics please step in if I get it wrong). Yes, because "Last Rights" sounds so final, I think the preferred term is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It is a sacrament that can be received multiple times - during relapsed illnesses, if the person takes a turn for the worse, prior to surgery, etc. Another out of date, downer term for the rite is "Extreme Unction" which is what my grandparents always called it. As far as the order of operations in teh sacrament, Tex, usually at the end of life there are three distinct sacraments bestoewed. In orderm they are Confession, then teh Annointing of the Sick (the actual ceremony consiste of laying of hands on the sick individual, and annointing with oil), and finally Eucharist. My HS theology teacher - a Lating geek after my own heart - referred to this last Eucharist as "viaticum" wihich refers specifically refers to a journey that is the 'passing over' to eternal life through Christ (via = road or way, as in "I am the Way, the Truth and the Light..."). My same theology teacher suggested that this sacrament might be the most non-Biblical and Catholo-centric, as nearlly all of the rules governing it come from the Cathoic Church Catechism, Summa Theologica, etc., rather than from direct Biblical sources. Mark alludes to the sacrament (according to Catholic interpretation) in relating Jesus instructions to go and teach all nations, anointing them with oil... etc. But, the more substantive Biblical source for the sacrament is from James, IIRC. There. Now, THAT is way more than anybody wanted to know.
  19. QUOTE(mreye @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) Is that a shot at me and my 9 toes? Not at all, Stumpy, not at all...
  20. My kids each have 10 fingers and 10 toes, are happy and healthy, and at 7 amd 5 years of age are already way smarter than me. My wife still puts up with me for the most part. We officially moved into a new (to us) house last week, but there's still lots to do. 3 days until Opening Day!!! I just saved a bunch of money on my auto insurance...
  21. Cutting to the chase, for Kafka the condemned soldier represented all of us. Just as he never truly knows what his verdict is, the jury remains out on our lives and the verdict is never actually revealed to us - merely etched into our flesh until we die. Nobody's going all cockroachy in this one, but a good read nonetheless. And, if your teacher is an old 60's throwback, you can probably get bonus points by working in somewhere that Frank Zappa in his liner notes to the album "We're Only In It For The Money" specifically instructs his audience to read The Penal Colony while listening to his composition "The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny." I did, at the tender age of 15, and I haven't been quite the same since...
  22. You be nice or I'll run you down with my Rascal...
  23. They'll only be able to go forward with thie plans for the town after settling their lawsuit with BET. I guess theay should have looked into copyright laws before going forward with their "Deaf Comedy Jam" fundraiser... Is there room on that Hell Express for one more?
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 01:02 PM) Now there are reports of stem cells coming from hair cells. http://news.dcealumni.com/474/290305-hair-...-of-stem-cells/ That is crazy cool. I can't wait to see more research on that front.
  25. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 27, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) I think the greatest hope lies in the umbilical cord. Much greater R&D is being done in the eastern nations with this than in America. It's reaching a point where many hospitals there are providing services for retaining the cords after birth. It's fascinating stuff & again you can read all about it at sciencedaily.com. They are looking at everything from fighting cancer to manufacturing blood. I agree I'd like to see saving cords/cord blood be a standard practice here. As it is, they'll charge you about $700 for the elective service now.
