  1. I would use this opportunity to make an old person joke and take a cheap shot at Tex, but it's not really worth it. Memory is the first thing to go so he wouldn't even remember reading it tomorrow. Hope it was a good one!

    QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) http://www.ironpigsbaseball.com/home/ Well yeah. . . but . . . those pigs are made of iron and pig pigs are made of. . . uhm, . . . pig. Still not the same.
  3. QUOTE (SnB @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 11:49 AM) We cracked open our bottle of Buehrlot last night. It was FANTASTIC. How the hell did I not even know this even existed. Well, at least I still have my 2005 MB Wheaties box.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 09:35 PM) She's been on Bill Mahr's show a few times. Pretty smart, quick witted woman. What's funny is that she's agnostic but still thinks the attack on the religious right exists. I tend to agree. Welcome to the agnostic fold. We're happy to add you to our ranks.
  5. Stoopid work kept me from tuning in on the Gameday, but I'm happy with the outcome. :gosox3:

    QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 01:34 AM) 1) Dolphins are seen as "cleaner" animals because of their water habit, and the friendliest/most intelligent because of their performances at places like SEA WORLD 2) The Miami Dolphins, there's no professional or collegiate team with the moniker "PIGS" I am sure, anywhere in the world 3) Dolphins are beautiful to watch in their natural habit, and among the fastest and most streamlined/aerodynamic animals 4) There are no world religions that consider eating dolphin to be unclean or unkosher...kind of a reverse argument on its face, but it supports the overall point, since nobody around the world really loves to eat dolphin in the first place unless there's no choice 5) People have been conditioned to eating pig meat for centuries Arkansas Razorbacks get no love.
  7. QUOTE (Cali @ Sep 1, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) Awesome Jackson. Stupid Tigers. Yeah, after as big a win as this it would be nice to make up a little ground in the standings.

    QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2010 -> 12:54 PM) I also understand that raising livestock is ridiculously unsustainable. Gallons of water needed to produce a pound of wheat: 25 Gallons of water needed to produce a pound of California beef: 5,000 Calories of fossil fuel expended to get 1 calorie of protein from beef: 78 To get 1 calorie of protein from soybeans: 2 There's no question that eating lower on the trophic ladder is more sustainable, though I've seen reputable sources putting the water cost for a pound of beef at half the value you list (Then again, there are estimates that it might actually be more then 10,000 gallons/lb, so your point is valid). But it's the same trophic transfer inefficiency that makes your earlier equating of eating domestic pig with wild cetacean illogical. And that is not getting into the maturation rate/fecundity/gestational differences. I get that this is a devil's advocate position for you — "How is eating dolphin any different than eating farmed livestock?" And of course you understand that it is different.

    QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) Why can't dolphins be used to feed the population? Kyyle more or less answered this, but I know you are smarter than that question. Domestic pigs have a gestation period of less than 4 months, a litter size that averages between 8-15 young, and they are weened in well under 2 months. Both males and females are sexually mature in under 1 year. Contrast that with dolphins, most species of which take around 8 years to sexually mature (females), reproduce onle every 2-3 years, have a 12 month (!!) gestation, and only have a single calf at a time. From a sustainability standpoint, do you really believe these are equivalent situations? Eating low on the trophic ladder as you do, you can also appreciate the per kg trophic cost difference in consuming an apex predator like a dolphin verses consuming an animal that primarily eats seeds, fruits, roots, and leaves (or a pelletized artificial diet consisting primarily of grain and vegetation). Humans also domesticated pigs about 10,000 years ago. Of course you understand the sustainability differences in farming stocks versus abstracting them from wild populations.
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 08:04 PM) When we were in Chicago my girlfriend purchased a bag with Chicago and some of the landmarks listed, Oak Street Beach, Water Tower, etc. One thing caught me eye, Prarie Avenue. I can't for the life of me remember Prarie Avenue. Prarie Avenue, Chicago
  14. Sounds like it was a good one.
  15. QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 27, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) And can people stop saying "all the sudden"? I mean really. I have honestly never heard anyone say that.
  16. Well, I thought I was going to see Xavier Rudd at House of Blues next Friday. But, due to a series of horribly botched negotiations, it now seems I will be babysitting four kids while my wife and three girlfriends goes to the show. Dad Gummit!
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 10:52 PM) http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/24-thi...-wrong-2338028/ I would put this squarely in the "cart-before-the-horse" category. Let's start with the "there/they're/their" tutorial first. (Yes, Jason, I'm looking in your direction. . . )
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 08:08 AM) I've always wondered how a gay person could be a Republican. Man Who Managed The Most Anti-Gay Presidential Campaign In Modern History Comes Out Sounds like Mehlman really does regret not having been able to come to terms with himself 20 years earlier. Not that I dislike him any less now. And you're right — you'd have to be packed full of a lifetime of self-loathing to be a gay member of the party that uses the "abomination" of the gay individual to whip up a foaming-at-the-mouth party frenzy every time they need to get the radical right "moral voters" to the polls.

  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace...till-there.html Lack of evidence of lethal toxicity in this case does not rule out BP oil as a direct cause of these large-scale sealife kills. Summer hypoxic kills do occur when dissolved oxygen availability is too low to meet the needs of aerobic organisms. Hundreds of millions of gallons of oil remaining in the environment is expected to exacerbate the situation because the oxygen demands of the microbial community chewing down all of that oil are huge. More oxygen uptake by microbial communities (remember, it's already a potential limiting parameter in the heat of the summer) translates to less oxygen available to meet the metabolic needs of the rest of the system.
