You know it. Where do I get one?!
-
FZ had it right -'People, we is not wrapped tight.'

Dang, I knew you were going to beat me to it Soxy.

I see Soxy on here and I'm sure she can put you straight. If you want my penny-ante theologizing, I think both of those translations are correct interpretations. In that one sentence, with one word – 'Logos' – John linked the God of the Old Testament with God in the person of Jesus. The Word was God and the Word was with God. And the Word (Jesus) was part of the plan from the beginning. And Steve, that verse ggets at the heart of it. For Christians Jesus is God in the person of the Son. Fully human yet entirely divine, yada yada, Father, Son, and Spirit are all faces of the tripartate Christian God. Makes your head swim. No wonder priests drink during mass.

Isn't It a Pity and Give Me Love are my two favorite George solo offerings. I don't think George would have easily forgiven EC except for the fact that Patti screwed around on and eventually left him too and put him through way more pain than even George went through. EC's Wonderful Tonight is one of those songs nearly everyone interprets the wrong way, as it was really about Eric being at rock-bottom and just going through all the motions in life when he and Patti were falling apart. Did you see the Rutles tv special from 1978 or did you first hear the songs out of context? I have never encountered a Beatle fans as to-the-bone as you that did not adore the "All You Need is Cash" special for the loving homage it really is. Knowing the Beatle legacy and lore as well as you do, how can you not watch that special and not be blown away by how well they nailed it on so many different levels. "Their legendary debut album took 45 minutes to record, their second one EVEN LONGER..." "Then there was the Fifth Member of the Rutles - Zeppo, who couldn't play a note but knew how to have a good time, which in Hamburg at the time was much more important." "If you listen to the track backwards it supposedly says, 'Stig has been dead for ages and ages... honestly'. And the most telling evidence is at teh end of the track Nasty is heard to say 'I buried Stig,' but in fact what he really says is 'e bure stigano,' which is vary bad Spanish for 'Have you a water buffalo?'." John Belushi as Ron Decline? Bill Murray as Bill Murray the K? Good stuff, give it another try if you get the chance.

Seeing you noted the George/Python connection, I assume you are a Rutles fan? With the exception of This Is Spinal Tap, there has never been such a well done rockumentary sendup. And Neil Innes' songs are just supurb. The George/Python connection helped launch Terry Gilliam's directing career as well. Handmade Films, producers of Time Bandits, was a project George backed and financed.

OK, I just signed up. The draft on that saturday afternoon might be hard for me but I'll try to swing it. Later.

I know he mlb Sox page's game notes say Shingo will NOT pitch today, they'll keep him until Monday. Coop thinks his prro first outing was due to his overthrowing and he's giving him more time to concentrate on just throwing like he did in Japan and not overthrowing. Other than that, i can't find who's scheduled to throw today.

Kilmer and Clooney did indeed suck ass. The only memorable line of that last one with Clooney in it was where Robin says something to Batman like "It's like I hardly recognize you anymore," an obvious self-reference to the crapfest shark-jumpery the Batman film franchise had fallen to.

Well whaddayaknow. The statue is a good Curt Swan style Superman, too.

I like the plan, win early and often. Let's do it!

If you'll only have one computer, I'd say definitely get a laptop. Then buy or make stand to elevate your laptop, buy a full-size keyboard and mouse and a good 15" flatscreen for less that $300 to use at your desk and it'll be better than a desktop maching because you'll have a 2-monitor setup. Especially for a college student, having the mobility to bring your computer to the library, to class, coffee houses, or out on tthe quad on nice days is really desirable. And more and more places are putting in free wireles networks -- with a wireless card in your laptop you'll probably just happen upon several free networks across your campus and environs.

In like the last three weeks I have become so jazzed about this really turning into a fun year.

Wi-Fi is so great. I'm at my favorite coffee house this morning doing a little work, drinking some yummy Sumatra, listening to good live classical guitarist, and in the Web with their free wireles network and my Airport-equipped PowerBook. Better still, at noon I'll run home and pick up the kids to take them to an Expos/Cardinals ST game up the road this afternoon.

I'm the Bold and Shiny Globe. That bites, I wanna be a gnome.

That frog in itself is only unusual in that it has survived to adulthood. More and more amphibians are being found with extra limbs, heads, organs, and other deformities. At the same time the population numbers of amphibians worldwide has plummeted. Biologists pretty much agree it's a really strong indication that most of the natural systems these animals inhabit are majorly screwed up. Amphibians are very sensitive 'indicator species' especially during their embryonic and larval development. Environmental labs have used frog eggs for nearly a hundred years in pollutant and toxicity assays for that reason. That these indicator species - known 'early warning' species - are dying out and being born with increasingly common deformities has made national news in recent years, but largely the world has yawned and switched channels. Given the importance of amphibians as a link in a lot of food webs, the disturbance is reverberating through the remaining linkages. Not good.

Why I didn't renew my tickets this year.
FlaSoxxJim replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I appreciate that sentiment, but I'm on the other side of the argument by virtue of location. I can't come in for the opening home series this year -- I have students on a field trip down to the Keys that was set in stone before I found out about a ($%#*&$%! Tuesday) home opener. I was dealing with that OK because basically a week later the Sox were going to be down here against the D-Rays, but my wife has immutable oblications for that weekend so that's oyt. The series down here with the Marlins in June and some subset of Games against the Tribe and then Cubs at Sox is all I can swing for a summer trip this year. I hope I or my dad or Bro scores some tix when they go on sale, but if I have to pay through the nose I'll suck it up and do it. Between the away Fla series' and a couple of Chicago jaunts I had hoped to be taking in maybe 10 games this year (the most I had made since moving away). Now I'll be lucky to make 5 or so. Grumble grumble. [/rant] -
I agree Coop is a huge asset. I think he, Kusnyer, and Nossek are the hidden coaching assets that will make Ozzie's first year as manager bearable (sp?) for us. Two good wins today, nice way to kick off the year. Go 2004 White Sox!
-
Kudos to you both for getting one year closer to death. I kid because I care

Chicago is a good choice for Gotham, and most people think Gotham was the DC comics version of Chicago since Superman's town Metropolis was obviously their New York. Hopefully the film is nice and grimy.

Was the fourth song A taste of Honey? I vaguely recall that as a B-side release from the Introducing/Please Please Me sessions, but I can't recall if it was a Brit or US release.
-
Anna b/w Chains and Twist and Shout b/w There's a Place are the two original US 45s I have stored away back up in Chicago somewhere. Theu were both on the "Tollie" label, and not on Capital or VeeJay, right? Anna and Chains are both readily available on the Brit-Parlaphone Please Please Me, which is essentially Introducing the Beatles with a different track order (and cooler album cover imho – that's the one of the four of them looking down from a building railing that was reused on the Capital Greatest Hits "Red" 1964-1966 double album).

Yep, your response exactly mirrors that of a good friend who also experienced all it first-hand. He talks about what it was like to go to the neighborhood record store the Saturday morning of a new release (Teusday release dates must not have always been the norm, huh), then going home and eating bowl after bowl of cereal while listening to the new album while meticulously pouring over the album cover and liner notes (and damn the small format of CDs for ruining album art). This guy cringes at the different track sequences of the Parlaphone albums. Where I think the extra songs on the Brit Revolver are not only a bonus but integral to the album, he curses and says that stuff is supposed to be on Yesterday... And Today, because that's the way he experienced it first hand. He is as passionate about the US catalog being the way it should be as you are, and I respect the opinion because it's only though people like you and him that I variously get the first hand impression of the experience. Actually a LOT of thought has been put into how the entire Beatles catalog should be released in a definitive way on CD. With the Brit albums it gets difficult because the mono releases outsold the stereo releases at least until Sgt. Pepper (versus the States where stereo versions outsold mono almost from the beginning), so there are arguments over which mixes should be released if the point is to recapture the original releases as closely as possible. Most audiophiles want to see 2 disc dual-format editions released in those instances. I personally don't give it much thought because I have most of what I want on original vinyl releases and – pops. hisses and all – that sounds as authentic as anything ever can to me. My stone age Technics turntable is slowly dying however, so I may soon be in trouble.
