  1. It means you should have stopped stalking whoever she is two weeks ago
  2. Cliff should not have started the 9th,a nd he certainly should have been pulled after the first walk. I completely agree with JimH about trying to keep the relievers in their stated roles - at least for the first game! That said, I really liked what I saw through seven innings before I had to get out to my kid's T-ball game (yes, at least I was spared having to experience first-hand the wheels coming off at the end )
  3. Chevy Chase? Barth Gimbal?? BG: "I'd like to thank you all for coming... or however you reacted."
  4. Wow. Many thanks for sharing such a deep and personal story. I have a family friend who's story is roughly parallel to your friend Rick's. Different mysteries of the organism, but again just WAAAY too much to heap on any one person, and such a marvelously beautiful person at that. He's still fighting every day, despite being an effective quad and racking up $2 mil in uncovered medical expenses as of this writing. I look at him and I shrink to nothing inside knowing I could never ever deal with the s*** he has been dealt. And somehow, he does it with grace and dignity and it is phenomenally unfair... Rick. Charles.
  5. My assumption was that it was a reference to musician Midge Ure, guitars/vocals/synth for Ultravox from 1979 until the group disbanded in 1987. Of course I could be wrong.
  6. Letterman and Conan is still a good lineup. Leno's writers write to the lowest common denominator audience - it's accessible, safe as milk, and never particularly witty or thought provoking. That's exactly why he has the huge market share he does.
  7. What, no Harold's Chicken Shacks in Streamwood? When I come up in June/July Harold's will be one of my first food stops, along with some real pizza and killer burritos. Oh, and like 10 boxes of Selerno Butter Cookies - the anti-Atkins Diet.

    Too funny website

Those are stunning - I have lots of people I need to forward this fashion crapfest to... Thanks Soxy!
  9. Yep, Desmodus rotundus, the vampire bat is a little one, the body is about the size of an adult thumb, but the wingspan makes it a lot larger. I have not tracked down the CNN story, but that picture looks like a little brown bat or an Indiana bat (Myotis sp.), and not a vampire bat. If it's a National Parks Service file photo it is probably not a South American species, so it may have been misidentified. A lot of bat species can be rabies vectors but the insect eaters only rarely bite people and only then when they've been caught and manhandled. The fact that vamps are blood drinkers (sanguinivores for you scrabble players) makes them the most likely to transmit the disease. Bats rock.

    Official proof

Wow! Well done. Now if you're standing behind Kerry during a speech, I don't want to see you fidgiting and nodding off like that kid at the Bush speech last week.
  11. The way I look at it is that you have to at least be open to other women hitting on you around your girlfriend/wife, otherwise how are you ever going to cross "girl + guy + girl 3-way" off of your to do list?
  12. And again I say... :fyou Corporate Scumbags :fyou
  13. CW I'm sure will chime in, and probably others too. I try to be very objective in considering all of the Beatle solo efforts - they are all uneven and there are some clunkers in each of the post-Beatle catalogs. All Things Must Pass should be right where it is, and is not only the best GH, it's probably the best solo Beatle album. It will likely only get better when the re-released and Phil Spector-free version finally comes out. On the 5 star system offered here, ATMP should rate about 20 stars! I think Dark Horse (much more deserving of 2 stars) and 33-1/3 should both be up there in the second tier with Bangladesh. Brainwashed should also be right there, it was a really strong showing for his last album. I think both of the 'best of albums' should be either moved down or excluded from the list - not that I don't appreciate the function of 'best of' albums, they just shouldn't be considered as adding anything to the artist's catalog. Cloud 9 is an oddity because it has some really dated-sounding production (Jeff Lynne) on some very strong compositions. It probably deserves to be where it is, but based on heavy-handed overproduction and not musical content. I'd love to hear the stripped down demos of these songs some day. The other slots are probably pretty fair. Wonderwall and Electronic Sounds are what they are, and weren't designed to yield any top 40 radio hits but I especially like Wonderwall quite a bit. Some of the low-rated albums had hit tunes on them ('Blow Away' on George Harrison and 'All Those Years Ago' on Somewhere in England) and some other decent offerings but were not stellar overall. Gone Troppo is just plain bad - I've listened to it maybe 3 times since I bought it the week it came out in 1982. Maybe this is the album that made Cloud 9 seem so good in comparison.
  14. 'Sex pest'... I think that's what my wife calls me when she doesn't want to do it.

    Getting Hit On

Carefully now, Tex ... step AWAY from the Smiley palate...
  16. It's not so much that -- crappy Intel cheap iron is crappy Intel cheap iron no matter who's logo is on the box. They just got away from a business formula they knew and understood when they branched out from online direct sales and started sinking resources into the stores. Dell, on the other hand, saw what Gateway did successfully and improved on it when they started getting serious about direct sales.
  17. Damn, I was using the pending guilty verdicts as an argument with my wife for NOT throwing her that $2 million birthday party she's been hinting at. Now I guess these guys are free for the time being and I have to go rent a Greek Island... Seriously, this is a disheartening turn in that case - especially for this recent SarBoxer in the midst of our own corporate reform battle (My guys have apparently only bilked us out of $60-100 million, though, so what am I grumbling about?!?) :fyou Corporate Scumbags :fyou

    adoption

Spay and neuter those stray kids like Bob Barker says, and the problem will go away. My cousins adopted an eastern European girl and a Korean boy very many years ago. They grew up as a regular part of the family. Some friends have adopted a boy and a girl from India and they are about the sweetest kids you could ever hope for. Steff's right about is taking lots of time and money if you want caucasian infants, but if you are willing to adopt kids a couple of years older that is substantially easier. And that is far and away a group that needs more parents willing to make them part of their families. Special needs children of all ages/races/needs are also out ther in karge numbers and are in desparate need of loving families, but you have to be a special type of person to take that on. Good on ya if you do decide to adopt. Work on that getting engaged/married thing first, though.

    Music

The Clash should be mandatory listening for any teenager who thinks he/she gets rock and roll. I pretty much wore out my copy of London Calling in high school. Death or Glory... Becomes just another story... The Ramones were interesting enough, but they were product, way more form than substance - the Replacements were the real deal dissatisfied and adrift suburban-product. Talk about a great group that never got they're full props...
  20. That would be somebody else's problem, as my day as Dubya would be over. FairTax needs to be seriously considered. About the only thing I give Baby Bush credit for as he has at least allowed some debate on this.
  21. A constitutional ammendment is not the way to go about this, but I'll play... I would completely do away with income tax and go entirely to sales tax als Fairtax. People woudl be taxed on how much they spend, not how much they make (Heather, your +1 mil luxury tax sends the wron message by punishing success and drive - not that I'm in danger of making your cutoff...). The rich buy more and thus pay more taxes, but only at a rate commensurate with what they purchase. Plus, mobsters, drug dealers, etc., don't pay income tax but they do buy stuff, and that will also be taxed. Finally, without the need for armies of auditors and tax income tax processors, the IRS can be pared down to like a tenth of its current size and they will be re-deployed to keep the Fairtax system running.
