QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 07:37 AM) But which gets more media coverage? What gets talked about more? Meh. It's expected, sadly. Let me see, what is the media going to cover more? Protesters or members of the media arrested and pepper sprayed and treated like protesters? I think that police tend to be a little heavy handed in general during conventions, and many of the protesters that you hear about are pretty ridiculous and deserve a lot of the treatment they get. The Donna Brazile story is odd, because she won't comment on what happened that got her pepper sprayed in the first place.

OK, so nobody saw the three hour first day. Rumor is tomorrow will be back to a more normal schedule. Laura Bush and Cindy McCain sought out help for the victims of Gustav this afternoon. http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmart...ef_efforts.html Bush and Cheney will not appear in MN, something that might be a hidden benefit politically for McCain. Also, McCain will accept nomination in person because the storm was less powerful than thought. However in stranger news, today - CNN analyst Donna Brazile pepper sprayed outside the Xcel Center http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail..._pepper_sp.html

2008 General Election Discussion Thread

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 11:32 PM) It's not a smear, because honestly, none of it's stuck. Rev. Wright - that was RSO's own doing, not the right wing. He stepped in his own s*** spot on that one. Birth Certificates? WTF? That's just stupid, and I've never heard of it. Ayers - ok, let's face it, the guy worked with RSO. Period. Closely at that. Yet, no one can prove a thing there, and so that's all the further it's gotten, so what? It's not about "fighting back". It's about taking the high ground, something neither party seems to know how to do. I'm sick of the "gothca" bulls***. Let's just stick to the issues. The birth certificate was a big thing. Big enough that the campaign actually had to produce it believe it or not. If the McCain campaign failed to vet Palin, that could be a problem. With all the s*** that came up in just a couple days from someone who was basically unknown on Thursday, it's not a good sign. If the McCain campaign needs to send ten more lawyers up to Alaska to retroactively further vet her? Even a worse sign. Actually leaving Wright and Ayers out of it, there was the "Secret Muslim" thing, the "Terrorist Fistjab" thing, the bulls*** Rezko mortgage thing, there have been plenty of "gotcha" attempts. Very little of it really stuck, because its mostly all untrue crap. The "Troopergate" issue is a google search away, and the active investigation gives a very real possibility of a deposition from her before the Election, which could look really really bad for someone who's trying to run on a "Reform" slogan. A lot of the stuff that has come up from Palin hasn't been super deep opposition research, that stuff won't pop up in 36 hours. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Shotgun wedding FTW. First off, for the record I'd like to clarify that I believe this has no bearing whatsoever on the presidential race, Palin's personal character, or anything like that, and that it's the business of her family and her family only. Now, having said that, it's my personal belief that getting married just because you're knocked up is a terrible idea. You're either meant to be married to someone or you aren't (and I don't believe in soul mates btw but that's another subject), and having a baby is NOT going to automatically make it work. However, I do hope it works out for her. You are absolutely right lostfan. This has no bearing on anything. Her daughter isn't running for anything. And in the end, it really doesn't matter. -
QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) According to DTV 361, which is the local NO channel, less than 5000 people stayed and those were mainly business owners who couldn't leave and the workers from the 2 hotels that remained opened. The rest there are media and g'ment officials, so I don't think that # is accurate. Good news so far that the rain and wind hasn't been as strong as they thought it would be though they are far from out of the woods. Reports I heard last night estimated about 10,000 people but that may have included emergency workers.

Bad timing for the convention, but good timing for Sarah Palin who just announced that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant. I heard it on Fox News but can't find it yet. -
Big changes to the convention. Basically nothing but business Monday, and probably Tuesday. Possibly the delegates will be employed in a service activity. Bush and Cheney is a no show, McCain may not even speak on site, but rather by satellite.

The good news, if there is any about this, is that the storm seems to be looking to make landfall west of New Orleans, near Morgan City which would spare New Orleans the storm surge that is one of the biggest threats to the Levees.

I'm starting to read stories about people who want to leave, and aren't being able to for fear of losing their job, or not being able to afford the trip out. (It's not about the gas, but about the fact that there isn't a lot of money being thrown at the average New Orleans employee to be able to get a hotel room for a week or so. The City of New Orleans is offering no shelters for obvious reasons. Are shelters being set up elsewhere?

Maybe its all the time in Brooklyn, but the new T.I. track that leaked this weekend - "Swagger Like Us" is a-mazing.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 10:43 PM) Oh that's right, they had it on the ballot, right? Is that what you mean? Yeah, there was a concerted effort to put Gay Marriage amendments on the ballot in swing states, to help boost turnout with conservative and evangelical voters. It worked in a lot of states. -

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 07:52 PM) You honestly think "gay marriage" as an issue turned out enough voters for GWB to win? I do think that's the difference in Ohio. And therefore the difference in Ohio. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) What do you know that the rest of us don't? I believe they spoke on the phone a couple times and literally only met once.

I did not vote Democrat until 2004 on a Presidential level. I left the Presidential ballot blank in 1996, and in 2000, voted for Nader (although would have voted for Gore if in a state where it mattered.) Since entering adult life, I've come to realize that there is a lot of importance to individual freedom. The freedom to marry who you want. The freedom to conduct your private life appropriately and privately without fear of retribution. Only one party supports the steps necessary to get to a point where equality is truly something that all people can support. In the last four years, I've watched one party grow to become a party that welcomes dissent, disagreements and various groupings of opinion. I've watched a party decide that everyone is important to its success, and to the success of our country. I've watched a party that wants its members to take an active role in determining their political destiny. That, more than anything, is why I'm a proud Democrat today.

That's from Zoolander if I'm not mistaken.

So I'm closing this thread. Too many people can't play nice.

Before this thread becomes nothing but piling on of each other.... This thread is about McCain's Vice Presidential pick. It is not about the appropriateness of snark, or who is a fanboy of what candidate. If you'd like to continue that discussion, please feel free to do that here. If you feel that you have issues to iron out with yourself and another poster, that may be something worth doing in private.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) Well, if she's really into "fighting corruption" and "small government", I'd say she's a good choice. I still don't know enough about her to make a good comment yet. I believe she raised corporate taxes actually.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) also doesn't count Cspan and PBS I heard, and I was watching PBS I couldnt watch the cable nets for more than 45 seconds at a time, would immediately switch to C-SPAN.

Personally, unless either candidate embarrasses themselves during the last three months of the campaign... there's not much that the VP does to change anything like this.
-
There might be something that this pick lacks, and does so in a way that might actually affect something. Latinos are a key swing constituency in this election. Bush picked up over 40% of that vote, and McCain really needs to hold on to that. Unfortunately, his party's actions since 2004 have done a great job of moving the Latino vote more solidly into the Democratic column. McCain might have benefitted most from a pick that could be seen as both friendly to hispanics and the conservative base. That might be a tall order, but I think its really the only way that either VP candidate could really have a lasting effect on the race.
