NY Times calls for Attorney General's dismissal.
Rex Kickass replied to Rex Kickass's topic in The Filibuster
Well, remember impeachment trials are basically political ones - not criminal ones. Someone impeached and convicted does not go to jail. He is simply removed from office. The idea of a death by 1000 papercuts wouldn't go unnoticed here. A deliberate attempt to subvert, obstruct and lie about its dealings regarding issues varying from Patriot Act to Iraq War to Gitmo/Abu Ghraib to these political firings could be argued show a preponderance of evidence of a lack of regard for the rule of law as it applies to the Federal Government. I'm not saying its a good argument. But it is an argument nonetheless. And because successful impeachment movements start from the grassroots (one of the reasons why Nixon's was successful and Clinton's wasn't), it may often be the very worst arguments for impeachment that light the biggest and best fire for removal from office. -

Kap, for once, you're raising a great possibility. I think the idea of impeachment is rapidly coming to the table and may have a fighting chance based on seeds planted in this fight. If there ends up being enough political will for an impeachment, it may come from this attitude of a lack of accountability to Congress or the American people from the White House. The way the case lays out right now is this: Several US Attorneys were fired. The stated reason is "performance related," the real reason appears to be political in nature. This is not an illegal act. It is a shady one and when questioned before Congress, the Attorney General flat out said that the firings were not political in nature. Recently several emails have leaked out related to this affair that directly contradict what the AG says. There now appears to be the possibility that the Attorney General lied under oath to Congress. Apparently there are several documents now missing from the recent dump surrounding the time frame when the firings occurred. And the White House refuses to let Karl Rove and other persons in the employment of the White House testify under oath and without any written notes being taken. So if nothing unforward or illegal happened, why isn't the White House allowing a transcript of the interview to take place? I understand not testifying under oath, but I have a hard time accepting the "off the record" status of an interview. Apparently, so does Congress. Subpoenas look like they will be issued. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8...;show_article=1 -

Happened during Desert Storm as well, pre DADT. These kind of discharges aren't traditionally pursued with the same vigor when there is fighting to be done. -
Anyone heard the new Ted Leo?

There are lots of stupid cover ups that get exposed every single week in Washington. Most are swept away because they don't matter and the person involved is liked enough to not be a big deal. But every so often, something like this comes up and the relationship is poor enough to cost someone their job. If you think this is about who covers up better, you need to take your blinders off. The Dems are no better at covering s*** up than the GOP. -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 10:58 PM) oh that's right... new laws. She is not required to have a passport to go to the Canadian side of the falls until at least January 1. However, a birth certificate would be required otherwise.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) Really? Have one of her albums from the 90s and virtually none of her Lennon-era stuff. I'll have to dl some of it. Can you elucidate - what makes it so good? It's a lot of songs from the 70s and 80s redone with modern artists. Some really great tracks, but the album is front loaded.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2007 -> 07:06 AM) Alberto Gonzales took over the AGs office on Februrary 3, 2005, while Reno served the whole eight years under Clinton. Does a new AG deserve to decide who he wants on his staff, or should he have been stuck with all of the DAs? IMHO AG AG would have been able to survive the blowback on this much better had he not acted with such contempt for Congressional oversight from the very beginning. If the AG office hadn't been so adversarial with Congress since 2005, this kinda thing would likely have disappeared. -
I agree completely, it would have come out two weeks ago if they were sitting on this.

There are now four GOP US Senators that have said "no confidence" or "he should resign" regarding our current Attorney General. John Sununu - NH Norm Coleman - MN Gordon Smith - OR Chuck Hagel - NE -
Firefighter's Union had a joint forum for union members and presidential candidates. Every major candidate was invited, although there was some debate about extending an invitation to Rudy after his decision to bulldoze the remains of several hundred firefighters which had not been recovered at Ground Zero. Rudy last week: Firefighters are my heroes. Rudy today: No show before the Firefighters Association. Oh yeah and then this: Guiliani's law firm lobbies for CITGO. The oil company owned by Venezuela. Whose President is Hugo Chavez. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/14/...in2571410.shtml Now, granted Guiliani has nothing to do with this lobbying effort, and the law firm has been lobbying for CITGO pre-Rudy, but it can't help him to have this kinda stuff come out either.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) On a different topic...if you go to http://www.johnmccain.com/Brackets/, enter a random email address and zip code...you can view John McCain's tourney brackets. His final four? Florida UNC Kansas Ohio State. Yes, that's right, he picked all 4 #1's. And his elite 8 has 4 #1's, 2 #2's, and 2 #3's. Kansas and North Carolina: conservative base. Ohio and Florida: swing states. He's even pandering in his brackets .

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 12:49 PM) I think I mentioned that in my post. Yep. I did. It was "sex" and it sold. And that's NOT why he was impeached, but nice try. You're right. The President was impeached because there was an element of the GOP that refused to accept the legitimacy of the Clinton presidency and sought to undermine it in every way necessary. And the President was impeached based on a question asked in a deposition before a grand jury regarding the sexual nature of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. He said he did not have a sexual relationship. In video taped Grand Jury testimony he admitted to an inappropriate physical relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Many people considered this an act of perjury and he was impeached based on that and obstruction of justice related to this testimony, officially. -
I didn't get to watch many games last year, given my location and my cheap ass not willing to pay for extra innings packages. But when I did see the Sox play, I would watch Brian Anderson play CF with no fear defensively and someone who was a little lost at the plate. I saw him get better at the plate in the second half of last year, and consistently maintain the best outfield defense our team had to offer. BA is young. He was in his first season in the majors. I can imagine its very difficult to get in the right mindset to work in a clubhouse. Since the end of the season, everything points to him doing the right things. His ST play has been good. And now that he's a year older, he just might not be the fartstain in the clubhouse that people seem to think he was. There has to be a reason why he wouldn't get a fair shake. Maybe he's still being a dick off the field. Maybe he doesn't get along with Ozzie. Maybe its both. I have yet to see a situation where when Ozzie is faced with a choice between a young talent and a veteran journeyman, he picks the young talent. Jenks only got his chance because Shingo broke down and then Hermanson broke down. In 04, young starters were getting called up and sent down within three days. Granted they had a rough outing, but a lot of times, they weren't given room to breathe either. There's a lot of evidence to point to this organization not believing in developing talent at the biggest level since 2004.

Southsider: am I wrong in thinking that the billions and billions locked up in subprime lending going south will be a huge catalyst to a possible recession?

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 12:29 PM) yea, it would be more trouble than it's worth. our public schools have enough problems teaching kids, don't need to throw divisive religious discussions into the mix. how about spending additional resources making sure high school kids can actually solve an equation that would be considered fairly simple to a student in other first world countries. we are so far behind in math and science i would rather see more math instruction over a class about allah, or jesus, or whoever. Logic H Science! The two subjects are not mutually exclusive. Other countries succeed educationally because they teach students to think critically. I think we forget that balance sometimes.

It's back over 12000, but I can definitely understand the nervousness. Everyone thought the housing slump was over and now with all the subprime mortgage issues - coupled with GM needing to float its GMAC arm a billion dollars to keep it alive, has got to be scaring the crap out of Joe Investor today.
-
I totally support the concept of a required comparative study of world religion in secondary education. Curriculum would need to be closely monitored, though. So many things that shape our world's history, and current events have everything to do with the understanding or misunderstanding of religion.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 14, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) That's probably more true then anything else. If Mrs. Bill Clinton gets elected, though, her policies and "cover-ups" (unless it sells more papers, i.e. Monica!!!) will definitely not be as widely reported, though. It is the "in" thing to rip George W. Bush. That's certainly true. And Flaxx, at the heart of it all, GWB sucks ass at covering his ass, legal or otherwise. And his ass is getting bigger every day, if you know what I mean. If you think Clinton administration missteps won't be covered as harshly, you're forgetting that the previous Clinton administration was impeached based on a scandal from Star magazine. -
I love a Warner VP nod.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) Haven't watched the show, but just came across this reading an article on ratings. In cable, Fox News Channel's foray into intended comedy, The Half-Hour News Hour (1.5 million), was almost as big as Comedy Central's biggest Daily Show (1.6 million for a Thursday-night airing). Fox News Channel's first episode of 1/2 Hour News Hour: 1.5 Million Viewers Fox News Channel's third episode of 1/2 Hour News Hour: 802,000 Viewers
