  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 16, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) And btw, just to clarify, you can't be "criminally negligent." Negligence is a civil tort. Criminal you have to violate a law. I disagree with Kap that Obama was negligent, but I do think his response was pretty pathetic (and equally bad as Katrina). In reality, is there anything more he could (or should) have done regarding the leak itself? No. That's all on BP. But it should not have taken him 2 months to get "pissy" about it and use his powers as President to force the issue. He's also made some pretty retarded statements which shows he's not the savior everyone wanted/wants him to be, e.g., saying he wouldn't meet with BP leaders. If all we expect out of a President anymore is the ability to constantly react with the adequate form of emotion publicly, we're all f***ed as a people. Could Obama's response have been better? Hell yes! Can he stop the oil? Hell no! And frankly, the worst part about this is that short of him putting on a wetsuit and diving down a mile to that pipe with a bucket of spackle, nothing is gonna stop a lot of people (with other axes to grind) from saying he isn't doing enough about this. But what does he do to make this better? Kick BP out of the gulf? Then its a government takeover and OMG SOCIALISM! Strengthen oversight over sea drilling and make regulation and oversight over this dangerous work much more strict. Then its government expansion and OMG SOCIALISM! He can't even take over the claims process for damages from this disaster without people complaining that it isn't the government's role. People on the left are calling for his head because he isn't as liberal as he imagined. People on the right are calling for his head because the conservative punditocracy has moved so far to the right that Ronald Reagan would be considered a RINO these days. The radicalization of our country on both sides of the fence is pretty sickening. I say this as a left wing liberal who is unafraid to stand up for the principles I believe in. But I also say this as a pragmatist by nature who recognizes that although polemics like me in this country have an important role, ideological purity doesn't help you run a country.
  2. Ahh, Democrats - never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Blanche Lincoln wins a runoff to have the privilege of getting her ass kicked in November. Truth is, Halter had the better shot of the Dems keeping their seat.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 05:56 PM) Take that ocean!!!! To be fair, Iceland does commercially hunt whales under very strict limitations, and the market is so small that they don't even fill their annual cap of 30-35 whales per year. There are about 250,000 whales in the waters surrounding Iceland, IIRC, and limited hunting would be sustainable.
  4. Richard Dunn, from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job RIP.
  5. I generally looked for good balance sheets, low debt load and some good avenue for growth in the future. I really liked JetBlue when I played in the market in early 2008. Frankly, I still like it today.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 08:35 AM) IOKIYAR This is an anagram I don't understand. OR TIAAIDU
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) He died as a result of working in a factory during WWII. But whatever. Agree to disagree. So does that mean that every person who took up smoking during combat and died as a result of their smoking, died fighting the enemy? Don't think so. It's a huge stretch to say the least.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) 'Golden Girl' Rue McClanahan dies at 76.

  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) So, it's not reasonable to say that Rosie the Riveter types were "fighting" the Nazi's too? I admitted it was a poor choice of words, but it's not like she was embellishing to the point of flat out lying like the recent guys about Vietnam. I think she meant to say that he died participating in the fight against Nazism, so to be called that is an insult. Smart choice of words? No. A big deal? No. Not when you die a decade after World War II. Unless he died on the inside. That's a little different, though.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) I can, because if it wasn't for SOX, AIG and LEH never happen. Actually if it wasn't for Glass Stegall repeal, AIG and LEH don't ever happen either, right?
  12. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) Glad to know that you were there for the first hand confirmation of the news stories put out by the Palis only seconds after the incident happened, as if they somehow already had them prepared! One account says they attacked the ship, the others say they boarded for inspection and were themselves attacked. There is also apparently video proving each side is correct. (Surprise, surprise!) The so-called peace flotilla stated its intentions of running the blockade, why should the Israelis have waited until it crossed the border to take action? Would that have made it all better in your eyes? if the boats were inside territorial waters, would you have a different story, or just find a different angle to attack on? They went there for an altercation, planned for it, had press releases ready and everything, and they got what they were looking for. If the goods were purely humanitarian in nature, why did they not take the israelis up on their offer to offload the goods at port and have them transported across the border by land? Because they WANTED a fight. I am not absolving the IFF of any responsibility. I take issue with them being called a terrorist organization when they clearly are not. This was a provocation to end an embargo that was enforced by Israel AND Egypt. Israel chose to take measures that were beyond what should have happened. Egypt responded by essentially opening up their border and ending the effective embargo. If the boat was in territorial waters? It would still be unacceptable, but at least there would be a leg to stand on for Israel. Now, they essentially have none.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) So they should just let boats with 'aid' coming from terrorist funded groups into the region unchecked? Why don't you just have them open their borders while you are at it, and give Palistinians the right to vote in Irsael? I think there's a difference between boarding a ship within territorial waters and conducting a ship inspection to avoid finding contraband and boarding and attacking a ship in international waters which is essentially what happened. If there were real weapons on that ship, we'd have heard about that. And the end result? The end of the blockade actually, because Egypt, Israel's partner in this blockade responded to this attack by opening its border with Gaza for an "unlimited" period instead of the couple days a month it previously allowed. And the flotilla was manned by IHH, a terrorist group that does such horrible things as its focus as providing water wells and health care in Africa, like working to treat cateracts in 10 countries across Africa.
  14. This is pretty inexcusable on Israel's part IMO both in terms of advancing peace in its region and just in general.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 27, 2010 -> 08:14 PM) LMAO. And there's some ocean property in Arizona to sell you. The "compromise" on health care was for the DEMOCRATS, not Republicans. And it's still government run health care - the bill IS a public option but evidently comprehension seems to be lacking on this point. The offshore drilling was a GREAT idea, wasn't it? That was for Republicans? Oh, to buy votes for cap and trade. Yeah. Nice "compromise". Why don't you ask Chuck Grassley how much of the Health Care act was written by Republicans, because last time I checked - he's all about taking credit for the bill he tried to block. Maybe if you took your Rush colored glasses off long enough to look at reality, you might notice that there are quite a few unhappy people on the left. Because Obama has been too compromising, and because he turned out not to be the liberal that he never said that he was.
  16. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 25, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) Uh oh. You're baiting Kap to come in here and have a nervous breakdown. Doubt it. Denying equal access, opportunity and rights to people because of their sexual orientation is bigotry. Period.
  17. I think China's actions here have a lot to do with what happens in the North at this point.
  18. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 25, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) Are some opposed to repealing this? if so, why? Yes. Because of bigotry.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 22, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Yup! Yup! We are a bunch of ignorant, hate, racist motherf***ers. Way to label 20,000,000 people with one fell swoop. To be fair Kap, there are plenty of Texans who don't embrace ignorance and hatred. It's just a shame they can't seem to get elected in that state.
  20. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 20, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) No offense, but I find this humorous. I think Glidden is the most exciting paint to watch dry. Once a Behr man, always a Behr man.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 20, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) They have been trying to nail him for a decade, especially France, you would think they would have done it by now if it was there. I think you can make the argument that he's too important to the sport to never have a positive result publicized. There have always been rumors of a positive EPO test in 2002, and I think there's enough smoke around Lance Armstrong to think that he's doped - just like nearly every pro cyclist in the game. It sucks that Landis was doping in some ways, but the test results were really odd. His positive in the TdF looked like a set-up, he tests positive on a day he basically wins the race through a miracle but tests positive for a steroid that wouldn't have the desired effect for that day. But the more his whole situation spiraled out of control, the more it became obvious that he doped. He was an exciting cyclist to watch, and really was the anti-Lance cyclist. I really wanted him to be innocent because I think a rider with his personality who won clean and free would have been awesome for American cycling.
  22. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ May 19, 2010 -> 02:53 AM) Or maybe Critz was a good candidate... Not saying he wasn't. But he did outperform every poll in the race. If the Republican had won this race, it very well could have been a bellwether. This signifies that the partisan excitement might be a bit overboard.
  23. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 18, 2010 -> 07:46 PM) Rand Paul defeats Trey Grayson per AP Rumor has it, Paul refused to take Grayson's concession call. Stay classy Rand!
  24. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 18, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) I predict a runoff. then a Blanche Lincoln win in the runoff. then she loses to whoever the GOP candidate is. Dynamics favor the insurgent in a runoff. Turnout usually drops by 20-30% and the people who come out aren't the people who are voting establishment. Bill Halter will be the Dem nominee from Arkansas I think. Oh yeah, Murtha's seat went to the DEM in the special election in 2008. This is the only district, by the way, that voted for Kerry in 2004 and McCain in 2008. If anti-Democrat sentiment can't win a GOP seat in a GOP leaning district this year, maybe the anti-Democrat sentiment is a bit overstated.
