  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) Two really good posts. Chicago losing in the first round totally kills my interest in the Olympics. I hope Rio gets it and looks like s*** in the process. Yeah, I am bitter right now, but there is no good reason for Chicago's bid to be lesser than Madrid and Tokyo. F the IOC. They are a bunch of corrupt old men. I think it sucks that Madrid lasted longer than the US in the voting consideration. But, the US does get a lot of games. The US had the Olympics in 80, 84, 96, and 02. They were even awarded the Winter games in 76 but then Denver gave up the bid in 1972. Canada got the games in 76, 88 and 10. North America has received games for 1/3 of the Olympic games over a forty year period, as a part of the globe, we've had a greater opportunity to host than most. It really is South America's turn and I hope Rio gets it. As cool as it would have been to have a Chicago games.
  2. I would argue that it's traditionally been easier to peel Dem votes away from a whip count on something like this than the other way around.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 08:50 AM) So what would you recommend as the best place for Int'l flights then? I'm currently searching for a flight to Spain Bing, Fly.com, mobissimo.com or vayama.com. Vayama is sort of a meta consolidator search. If there's a net fare available to Spain, you have one of the best chances of finding it there.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Try sidestep.com. Sidestep and Kayak are the same thing.

  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 1, 2009 -> 12:13 AM) If you're talking about cloture (filibuster) then I have no issues with it because both parties have done it ad naseum for the last 20 years. Reconciliation is how the Bush tax cuts were passed.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) The best i've found is kayak.com Kayak used to be amazing. They are no longer a good place to search for international, if price truly is your object - because they don't search OTAs who sell nets anymore.
  9. This thread is starting to feel like a Mobius strip.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 02:06 PM) cool tips. Thanks. I want to start a thread on google wave...good idea? What's Google Wave?
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 02:21 PM) That's impossible. Any sector that the government is in has zero private or more-successful competitors. Except for all those that do. After all UPS and FedEx, they're government run too, right?
  12. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) I am. Because it will. Oh wait, the government is going to subsidize everything - aka, we'll give you money if you do what we say. And that's still taking over private industry. Or insurance companies could learn to adapt.
  13. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) You guys live in a paralell universe or something. The town halls were all people that were paid, planted, and "organized" BY INSURANCE LOBBYISTS just like Obama said they would, right? It couldn't be that people don't want government run health care. It just couldn't be. Angry people and seniors go to town hall meetings. They aren't always indicative of anything, frankly. Poll after poll about public options have come out showing strong support for a public option. NYT/CBS poll - Would you favor or oppose the government offering a government-administered health insurance plan similar to Medicare that would compete with private health care plans? Yes - 65, No - 26 WashPo/ABC poll - Would you support or oppose having the government create a new health insurance plan to compete with private health insurance plans? Yes - 55, No - 42 Economist/YouGov poll - Do you favor or oppose...having a 'public option' which would allow individuals to purchase health care insurance coverage from the government?" Yes - 47 No - 32 Kaiser Family Foundation poll - Is now the right time to pass health care reform? Yes - 57, No - 39 All polls from September.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) I know you said that Asia didn't really interest you that much, but among programs, I've heard great thing about JET, especially how they give you traveling stipends. It's really difficult to get into the program though IIRC.

Each engine has its own benefits and drawbacks. Bing is basically MSN Travel + farecast. Everyone and their brother are building aggregate travel search engines, its the new big thing for Internet Travel Agencies. They all have their pluses and minuses. Farecast technology is great. And bing benefits from buying it. Fare Compare is also really useful because if you want to go somewhere and haven't decided where yet, you can select a destination and a region of the world and it will show you the 25 cheapest destinations in that region. The metasearches to stay away from IMHO is Kayak and Sidestep. Both of those sites have exclusive deals with Orbitz/Cheaptickets so they won't search other ITA's who sell net airfares. So unless Orbitz is selling a net, you'll never find a lower than published airfare on those aggregators. Look instead to fly.com or mobissimo.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 28, 2009 -> 06:26 PM) to say the least. But I guess I was just done with them after I hated the last album. Missin 2003 about now. It's hit and miss. I didn't realize Yoko guested on the album so I gave it a second listen and its starting to grow on me. I think I missed the Yoko/Basement Jaxx track because it's a cut. There are probably four or five really good tracks.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) Which is why I really think if a party is going to split, it isn't going to be the GOP. It's possible, but not likely. The GOP has shrank ridiculously in the last decade, there's not much left to split when it comes to leadership. The Dems have had a pretty good history of balancing needs of diametrically opposed communities within their own camp, because the party has been historically been guided by pragmatism rather than ideology.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2009 -> 11:04 PM) In all seriousness, if the Dems really believe that America wants this, why are they afraid to use their political capital on it? Short answer, because they're Democrats. Unlike the modern GOP, there has never really been a singular voice in the party.
  19. Peter Bjorn and John - Start to Melt Poster Children - Sleep Bjork - Hyperballad The Clash - Rock the Casbah Britney Spears - Piece of Me Whigfield - Saturday Night Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Bomb.Repeat.Bomb. Phoenix - Second to One Blur - Caramel bis - A Portrait from Space
  20. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 28, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) Wouldn't you need to know Korean pretty well?....and if you're teaching advanced levels of English, in English only classrooms, wouldn't you need to know English pretty well?..... I mean advanced grammar, not just basic conversation. They actually seek out non-Korean speakers because most schools want a complete immersion learning environment.
  21. The new Basement Jaxx album is, in my opinion, a disappointment.
  22. I looked into it briefly. Depending on the country you are going to, a TEFL certification can get you some definite salary bumps. Korea has a very interesting english teacher program. They put you up for free, you teach English, they pay you between 21 and 30K a year.
  23. I think what we're about to find out is that Obama is a bigger hawk than anyone on the left ever figured out. Just a lot more careful about where he plants our feet.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) Nope. You can see a couple dozen buildings, including many of the smaller ones in enough clarity to be able to name which one it is. On a clear day, you can see something like the Parachute Drop on Coney Island (which is not that tall) from about 20 miles away.
