  1. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Boone lost his place in the STHOF by giving up 4 runs. Boone will only be charger with 2 ER. Getz made an error to start the inning, Logan walked a guy, and then a bloop hit turned into a runner thrown out at home but guys on 2nd and 3rd. Wasserman came in, wild pitch for a run, a basehit for a run, and then a 2 run homer. Konerko just drove in 2 (off Qualls I think), it's 6-6.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2008 -> 06:32 PM) Didn't they project 72 wins and 4th place in 2005 as well? No, they projected 80 in 2005. See my post above which answers some of those questions. Projections can only do so much... no system can project that Bobby Jenks will bebrought up from AA and that Cotts/Politte and Jenks will be untouchable out of the pen. What they can do is give you an objective idea of where you stand in relation to the rest of the league. One injury to a team's key player, or one young pitcher having a crazy breakout season... turns everything on its head. PECOTA's not supposed to be a fortune teller.
  3. If you click on the Sox link for these projections, Silver has Crede playing 65% of the games at 3B, no Alexei Ramirez (who PECOTA gave a very good projection for) and no Octavio Dotel. Last year, they had DBacks 88, Padres 86, Dodgers 80, Rockies 79 Very close on the DBacks but obviously missed on the Rockies... but without the insanity of their million game winning streak to end the season it would have been a lot closer. They had Cubs 85, Brewers 85, Cardinals 81, Astros 80 Actually OVERshot the Brewers by 2. In 2006 - PECOTA had Indians 88, Twins 84, Tigers 83, Sox 82 In 2005 - Twins 86, Indians 85, Sox 80 Obviously no system or person is going to nail WL records on a consistent basis. There's just way too much stuff that can happen. I think these are a real good way though to take an objective look at the team. They basically jive with what we all think. If Danks and Floyd can do way better than they ever have and if Contreras can pitch well again, then they could be right there.
  4. QUOTE(bighurt4life @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 12:00 AM) Obviously KW did a good job in getting players that will help us this coming season. He upgraded our bullpen, our infield and our outfield. Thats a pretty good offseason, what the article doesn't mention however is that KW stripped our minors to the bone to make these deals happen. How good will we be in 3 years when team is getting older and we have no legitimate in-house options for replacement? Actually, he did address that here: "The Sox have correctly played for the present, and no matter what happens, Kenny Williams can be commended for choosing the right course of action."
  5. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 02:37 AM) Wow, I don't buy that on Ramirez. To me the projection on Quentin is hedging on whether or not he's healthy. If he's legit healthy, I put him down for considerably better than PECOTA. .850 if healthy- way worse, and way fewer games if not. .788 is some combination of healthy and not healthy at various times. I was surprised by the Ramirez projection. I thiunk it's a lot better than the one he got from ZiPS. It sounds like Silver's buying it on Ramirez for whatever reason... here was another one of my questions: Tweezer (Naperville): Thanks for taking the Sox questions. How do you think their outfield will shake out? Will Quentin play well enough to keep Owens off the field? Given the choice, who should play CF, Quentin or Swisher? Oh... and what happened to Haeger? Nate Silver: Neither of those guys should really be playing center field, but given the Sox' options -- and Ozzie is pretty good about making the most of his 25-man roster -- it has to be Swisher in center and Quentin in left. However, the guy to keep an eye out for is Alexi Ramirez, who could wind up at either center field or second base (those crazy Cubans!).
  6. It says Floyd, Danks and Contreras are bad. It would take Egbert over all three of them: Egbert ERA 4.99 WHIP 1.55 K 91 BB 59 GB% 55% Contreras ERA 5.00 WHIP 1.48 K 81 BB 45 GB% 46% Floyd ERA 5.23 WHIP 1.52 K 70 BB 40 GB% 44% Danks ERA 5.54 WHIP 1.54 K 88 BB 47 GB% 41% HOWEVER, I asked Nate Silver about these guys in a BP chat a few weeks ago or so and he said: Tweezer (Naperville): Are Contreras, Danks and Floyd going to get hammered? Oh, and I don't mean at Jimbo's. Nate Silver: Let's look at their EqERAs, which assume a neutral park and defense (league average = 4.50): Danks 5.11 Floyd 4.87 Contreras 4.69 These aren't players that you'll want for your fantasy squad, but they aren't terrible by any means; basically you've got three #4 starters. With that said, there's a lot of risk on either side of those numbers, so it would behoove the White Sox to do something like follow through with their plans to sign Bartolo Colon. With the offseason activity, there's next to zero pitching depth in that organization, so the scary thing is what happens if one of those guys gets hurt.
  7. PECOTA SAYS: .263/.349/.439 .788 OPS I'll take it. By the way, PECOTA also says Alexei Ramirez goes: .295/.342/.452 .794 OPS I'll take that too. Oh, and PECOTA says Swisher is good: .265/.373/.501 .874 OPS
  8. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Feb 3, 2008 -> 12:05 AM) Kind of a throwback to the old days of baseball, the beginning days. Still don't get it... but that's alright.
  9. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 10:32 PM) [Padilla is a real interesting guy; I'm no fan, but I find him interesting.] Edit: Bracketed is edited in. What's interesting about him? Quiet, surly guy with a drinking problem?
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 06:32 PM) I believe the question was not what numbers will he put up...but what numbers would he have to put up for someone to be willing to, ahem, "shine his knob". LOL - oh... right. Let's bump that OPS just a tad to maybe 1.500 or so then.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) Get that OPS somewhere in the .925-.950 range, like he's shown he can do at AAA... I'd take .825-.850... I'm not ready to put Thome's expectations on him quite yet... but I like the optimism!
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 05:28 PM) Swisher charges Padilla, also below it is 2 games beforehand where Swish admires an HR. Kid has some attitude thats for sure. I cant wait to watch alot of this young talent. http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/multimedi...ve.jsp?c_id=oak These clips are great... I especially like the diving catch in CF.
  13. QUOTE(Hawkfan @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 05:44 PM) If Quentin reaches his potential thats awesome. I hope that he does and we don't have to start owens in left. But I'm not quite ready to shine his knob as some fans are doing. Good, you should hope he does, because Quentin reaching his potential is a LOT better than Owens reaching his potential... which is of course why he should get the first shot. I don't know about the knob business, but I guess you're saying that some day you MAY be ready to shine his knob? What kind of numbers would he have to put up?
  14. QUOTE(shipps @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) Noooooooo.I was just just trying to make the point that early numbers(first 150 bats)unfortunately are nearly meaningless. They're only meaningless if they appear out of context with a player's history. Why should Quentin's early major league numbers be meaningless if he's done nothing but mash at every level? All he did was what people thought he would do. The guy can hit.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 03:52 PM) Speed doesn't slump. But speedy players do.
  16. Mariotti is never interesting and his writing skills are way overrated. I only bother skimming his crap, when someone posts a link or tells me I should check it out. I'm disappointed in myself for even contributing to this thread. Anyway, again this morning he serves up a big load of crap (how shocking). The Tigers lineup currently features Sheffield, Pudge and Maggs. The Yankees will have Pettitte in the rotation and Giambi at 1B. The Rangers and A's have been sticking thenselves in the asses for at least 15 years. To single out the White Sox is just really idiotic.
  17. What are you guys talking about? RotoWorld doesn't say anything about Cain, or him being at the back end of anyone's rotation: "The Mercury News reports that the Giants will monitor Joe Crede this spring, and if healthy, there's a "good chance" they could acquire him for a pitcher. Crede is about as good as the Giants can hope to do at third base, though they're likely finishing in last place in 2008 whether they get him or take a chance on someone like Dallas McPherson. Morgan Ensberg would also be a nice alternative. If they trade for Crede, the deal could involve Noah Lowry or maybe Jonathan Sanchez. The White Sox no longer have much need for bullpen help." http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernew...;filter_teams=A
  18. FYI - I asked Kevin Goldstein about Poreda today... wsgdf83 (Naperthrill): I've heard bad things about Poreda's delivery - that he's an injury waiting to happen. Have you heard the same? Kevin Goldstein: Not really. It's hardly perfect, but it's not end of the world violent or anything. The more legitimate concern is wether or not his secondary stuff will come -- it's still a pretty special arm.
  19. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) Ahh, no fun. Padilla!!!
  20. QUOTE(JFields27 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) Am I vastly ahead of myself? yes very much, but I am not into people saying suddenly Swish shouldnt play 1B cuz he isnt your ideal build, so I came up with that. I do not think we need to get a 1B back and i think getting someone like Kendrick makes the deal a do. I think Swisher would be a fine 1B, but he would be even better in the OF, so I just don't think getting Figgins is a good enough reason to move him there. Getting Kendrick is a good enough reason. Getting Kotchman (I know his name isn't in any rumors) would be OK because we'd have 1B locked up cheap and long and we'd get the most out of Swisher.
  21. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 09:36 PM) That's Konerko in return for a flawed pitcher and for ONE YEAR of a high obp, speedy bad fielding player. If that's all he's worth, don't trade him. That's a useless trade for us. Evem worse would be to slide Swisher to 1B. W'e'd trade our 2 top pitching prospects and 3 of our top 5 for a mediocre power first baseman. It makes a highly dubious trade ridiculously bad. That sums up my feelings exactly (except I probably like Swisher more than you). If Konerko is traded, Kotchman or Kendrick has to come back. I'm not saying the Angels should do that, because they probably shouldn't, but the Sox don't have to trade Konerko so they shouldn't do it unless it makes sense.
  22. QUOTE(JFields27 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) you series? Todaly.
  23. QUOTE(JFields27 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 09:24 PM) It started over at WSI(they deleted it because in their minds it was a hoax) the poster started a thread that said Confirmed Reports: Konerko to ... blah blah whatever in the thread was the trade and the guy said that his friend emailed it to him saying he heard the trade that had S-Rod in it on ESPN Radio 1000 at like 3:15(i assume since thats when they do their intervals) and said there would be something from KW at 3:35 anyways on WSI every one tuned in to hear ESPN 1000 talking football and not even a hint of the Sox, everyone started calling the thread a hoax .. but yeah .. then i was just looking at the espn.com boards and that was there so I guess they did say it. There seriesly may be another explanation.
  24. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) It's a shame you're so series about it, because the White Sox will be a much better, funner team to watch next season, with a much more complete roster. Do you seriesly think it wll be funner? Seriesly?
  25. Yeah, and he reportedly takes "long walks" with Kevin Towers, so what does that say about where he wants to be? Might mean nothing. Does he have a wide stance?
