  1. Who ever called me Mr Negativity?? That is the first I have seen that. You been talking behind my back?? :-)
  2. Lamura was sent back to Kanny and Honel to Winston Salem right after their starts.
  3. 2 hits but 3 Ks too, not so good when you see that.
  4. I too read Gaston had full ride to ND, but I also read he was a straight A student, could be a combo. He is dead set on ND.
  5. If player is JC player or a HS player who goes to JC for the next year, you can sign them prior to next years draft, Buehrle is one of our most succesful D&Fs, we had three this year, maybe 4 or 5 last year.
  6. I paid $8 for a one month subscription to Cedar Rapids newspaper for this. Here it is, he bailed on his team. Sweeney to sign deal with White Sox By John Riehl The Gazette Friday, July 11, 2003, 10:22:26 PM CEDAR RAPIDS -- Ryan Sweeney had just finished practicing with his Cedar Rapids Xavier baseball teammates Thursday night when his phone rang. His father, Gary, was calling. He didn't need him to run an errand for the family before returning home. He had much bigger news than a simple request to pick up a gallon of milk. "Dad called me on the phone and said, 'Congratulations, you're a White Sox.' I was like, 'Sweet,' " Ryan said. Sweeney, a second-round pick (52nd overall) by the Chicago White Sox in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, reached a contract agreement with the major-league organization Thursday night. Today, Sweeney will sign a professional contract, which features a $785,000 signing bonus and full college tuition, with the White Sox. Sweeney, an outfielder, said a player always thinks he's worth more money than he gets. But he's happy with his signing bonus, which is more than six signed players who were drafted ahead of him in the second round, according to Baseball America. Princeton University pitcher Thomas Pauly, who was picked one spot ahead of Sweeney, signed for $660,000. Former Iowa City High pitcher Zach Hammes, who was selected 51st in the 2002 draft, received a $750,000 signing bonus. "They slotted $675,000 (for my pick) and I got more than that -- over $100,000 more," said Sweeney, who had the option of accepting a college scholarship to play for former major-leaguer Tony Gwynn at San Diego State. "It's a big relief. It took a while, but I think it's all worth it in the end. I had the best both ways. I played a little of the high school season and now I can play in the minors." But his Xavier career is over. Sweeney, who leaves his teammates with mixed emotions, didn't play for the Class 3A top-ranked Saints Friday against Cedar Rapids Washington. Sweeney was batting .489 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs in 32 games. As a pitcher, he was 4-1 with 0.62 earned run average. "He feels the guys can do it without him," Gary Sweeney said. "I hope they remember him and put his name on the state championship trophy." Ryan Sweeney said, as of Friday afternoon, that the White Sox hadn't yet told him whether he'll report to their Rookie League team in Great Falls, Mont., or Bristol, Va. Sweeney is ready to go wherever he'll be playing. "I've been waiting for a long time for this to happen," Sweeney said. The White Sox, who were surprised Sweeney was still around in the second round, feel they're getting a special player in the Iowa product. "He's a great kid, very personable," White Sox scout Nathan Durst told MLB.com. "His confidence reminds me of (former first-round pick) Kris Honel, where Kris has the supreme confidence in his ability. Ryan has that as well. He has the chance to be an impact player."
  7. I have read 87-88 and thus he will be in the OF, possibility of 1B in future too.
  8. 3 more years, I think Lopez surprises you, he will get stronger and is a solid player right not. I agree on AGon, he will not be our SS.
  9. I agree with JimH, Lopez is our top 2B prospect in the minors. Antoin Gray may be in another year or two if he can play the D and keep hitting.
  10. I too want to keep Stumm as setup man and eventually closer. Heck with starting. Arias is just a kid, 20 and will be 21 in Sept. Was in DSL (Dominican Summer League) for us for 3 years, did ok. Was 1-12 in limited play for Arizona in Rookie ball last year. Do not let one 3-4 game that boosts limited AB average up high fool ya. If we have one catching prospect it would be Lisk at Great Falls and I am not high on him either.

  12. Finally found box for Kanny game on Sunday. I see Varela did not play and I notice him missing from one roster, wonder if promoted, demoted or released? 13. Don't expect Powell to go that high, scouts do not like his physique, think he could add weight too easily. We shall see.
  14. LOL, lets hope he does not pan out, for our sake. Tho I hope he does better than Fox, Ritchie and the other 20 catchers the Cubs drafted, (ok it was only 8, but they have not signed LaPorta or the guy from S. Carolina.
  15. Charlotte played an OF today named Nate Murphy, was with Angels farm system for a few years and with DBacks the last 2. He has decent OBP but not much else, he played LF today in the 4-0 loss.
  16. For you Jas, I know you were high on this guy and hoping he was draftable next year. They have signed most of their top 20 picks now, he was a 3rd rounder.
  17. Jimenez has no chance of making us worry about trading him. He was a malcontent, had bad attitude, was a non-hustle player who had little of no range. I would rather take my chances with Harris or Graffy, at least they have heart.
  18. Well, I beg to differ on Wells, he has a great ERA, been bothered by blister, but has pitched very well, bullpen has blown several games after he has left with leads. I also think Garland is a definite legit starting pitcher, maybe not an ace, but a solid rotation guy. I think you are looking for too much out of prospects if you think only one out of 50 make it.
  19. I can see you are willing to consider other sources, sheesh, I would call Kip Wells, Garland and Biddle pretty damn good pitchers.
  20. Probably whatever you'd like him to be at that moment. heh heh.
  21. Sorry for the phrase guys, just seemed to fit in with the Birmingham theme. :-)
  22. Dunn is more than a warm body. Rex is just a wannabe, right Rex :-)
  23. Rex does not come anywhere near overrating prospects. I have been associated with him for a couple years now, he is as honest a guy as you want to hear from when talking prospects. There are several others that I see that tend to overrate due to numbers or something they have heard, but not Rex. That dog don't hunt.
  24. Yes, Cook is the 9th rounder we took this year, he probably was promoted due to whoever was promoted to Kanny was not going to play everyday and they are not doing well. Wanted to leave Nanita, King and Anderson at GFs, let them have success together.
  25. Cerbaho, you gotta change that pic, every time my girlfriend sees that when I am perusing thru the sox info, I get that disgusted look.
