  1. QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 06:43 PM) The Norm Cash trade was worse even if it did get the Sox Minoso. RIP Johnny Cash and Minoso weren't involved in a trade for each other. We gave Cash to the Tigers, also after the 1959 season. We got Minoso in 1951, I beleive, and it was from the Indians. We later traded Minoso and Fred Hatfield for Al Smith and Early Wynn ( early 1959). Cash had a solid career with Detroit, hitting something like .360 one year. I've heard rumors about his using corked bats that year. I have no idea if it's true.
  2. I just read where Johnny Callison passed away this weekend. I beleive I was in High School when we brought him up. He was the classic "Can't Miss" prospect. Of course, we brought him up a year too early, he struggled a bit, and then we mde what was arguably the worst trade in franchise history. We traded him to the Phillies for an over the hill Gene Freese. I believe it was 1959, right after we won the pennant. Callison proved to be a notch below Hall of Fame calibre, but he was a great ballplayer. Super defensive in Right and a solid hitter. I don't know his life time stats. Maybe one of you guys can post it. He was not far below the ability of Al Kaline, for example. Bill Veeck pulled the trigger on that trade. I know he got a lot of credit for a lot of good things he did in baseball, but that trade was awful, right from the beginning. Johnny was only 67. R.I.P.
  3. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) What's also worth mentioning is that of all the minor leaguers KW has traded, none have made it big or would even be considered good. YHoung has the best chance and it's early to tell with him. So give KW credit for getting a lot in return for not very good players, but on the flipside it makes one wonder waht they're doing wrong with their drafts. Bob What were Chris Young's stats?
  4. I saw him play against the Rockies this weekend. He can defintely fly.
  5. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 6, 2006 -> 08:24 PM) Uh, the Todd Ritchie trade and the Wells trade weren't even bad, when you think about it. We gave up a bunch of losers in both of those deals. If we didn't make those trades, we'd still have sucked. The Ritchie trade just cost the Sox a playoff birth that one year, that's all, because Jerry M kept pitching him. Plus both Fogg and Kip wells had good years that year. What ws it, 2002?
  6. Rupe was just recalled by Texas. He was one of the prospects we gave up in the first Carl Everett trade.
  7. That use of Jeff Nelson the other day was one of Ozzie's worst managerial moves of all time. He is obviously 'shot' as a big league pitcher, and then he brings him in with the game on the line.
  8. Anybody know how he's doing this year?
  9. Gload can hit. He proved it in 2004 when he hit over .300 and he proved it in 2005 when he did so well at Charlotte. He got off to a bad start in early '05 and never got enough AB's to make up for it, but I remember a huge hit he got for us in early September when we were really struggling -- a double in the gap late in game that was a huge win at the time. I say we keep him all year.
  10. I saw Rowand play against the Rockies last night. He sure looked good.
  11. On the negative side we got Ritchie, Everett twice, and Thome/vazquez and gobs of payroll. You mentioned Fogg, but he wasn't the best pitcher we gave up in that deal. On the positive side we have Freddy.
  12. When did JR open up the purse strings? Doesn't seem like the same guy from a few years ago.
  13. QUOTE(JimH @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 05:24 PM) Yeah, and your team won a World Series as a result of trading off some of those prospects. Tell you what, you hang onto the prospects, I'll hang onto the World Series trophy. I would also like access to your crystal ball re: Gio Gonzalez. This management team has a sound plan, they are always looking 3 years ahead, they just won a World Series and you're complaining again. Unreal. Jim H. I wasn't complaining. I saw my name and responded. I don't think they should have given up Gio. Just my opinion. Jason, I remember you liked Rupe also. I know he came up in September and looked okay in one game, as I recall. But that Everett trade is old news. Thome/gio is not. We'll see. If he hits like he did five yrs ago, fine. If he hits like he did last yr, not fine. And Jim H, you sound as if the 2005 team was composed of vets we got for prospects. Not so, other than Freddy. Marte we got for a prospect, but that was not significant. Uribe for Miles, but he was not a prospect like Reed/Gio. Anyone else? I'm delighted you can hang on to the World Series trophy. I guarantee you I was cheering and pulling for the Sox as much as you were. My history as a Sox fan goes waaay back. Relax.
  14. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 11:26 PM) This is where Old Sox would step in and say something like "The Sox have 25 minor league propects? Yeah right!" -- I wonder if he ever got over his bitterness following the Jeremy Reed trade. Somehow I doubt it, and he's ready to start crying about losing Gio. Edit: was it OldSox? I'm starting to doubt my memory. Gene and Jason: I'm back, and, yes, I hated giving up Gio and Haigwood. Especially Gio. Giving up Rowand for Thome should have been plenty. We did the Phillies a big time favor by taking Thome off their hands. Why did we have to give up Gio? I also hated the Jeremy Reed trade, but I softened after we signed Freddy. At first there was no indication we would sign him, and that's when I did most of my b****ing. I expect Reed to come into his own in '06. I also hated the first Everett trade. Still do. Rupe should stick this year, Webster soon will, and Rodriquez will too if he is over his chair throwing punishment. Prospect trades can backfire big time. Trading Johnny Calison for Gene Freese in '59 was the worst. Some of the trades we made FOR prospects were okay. Like getting Garland for Matt Karchner. I loved that one. Years ago, when we traded for guys like Fox, Pierce, Minoso (the first time) we were getting prospects for over the hill players. Other teams had similar results from trades for Smoltz, Bagwell, and many others. So now we are getting an old, way past his prime player in Thome, who is expensive, slow, injured too often, didn't hit a lick last year for a solid major leaguer in Rowand who is entering his prime. Still, I can accept that risk, but giving up a stud like Gio was way over the top. Unnecessary, considering the risk we are undertaking with Thome. Sorry if my previous b****ing annoyed you. I ws just on a rant. I thought that's what this board is for. later.
