See my other post: How many position players get seriously injured during a seaosn? I'd say it is around 5-10 and usually doesn't happen to stars. What happened to Corey Seager is unusual.
-
The risk of getting seriously injured as an MLB position player is pretty minimal. If they were pitchers, I'd agree.
-
Nah, I'm just tired of the whole saga. I just want it to be over, tbh. Shit or get off the pot to all involved,
-
Maybe location is more important to them than the money. That is what it seems like to me. If it were about money, I think this would have been over long ago. Maybe they want to get paid a bit less money, but be in the right location for them personally.
-
This sums up my feelings perfectly, to all involved

It is getting to the point where I think that Harper and Machado are going to take one year deals to stick it to the man. If Harper really wants to play for the Cubs, he'd have that opportunity in 2020. If Machado really wants to play in NY, and the Yankees are out, maybe he can convince the Mets to get involved on a 1 year deal and re-sign in season. The biggest mystery to me is why the Mets aren't in on Machado.
-
Very true. I'm not bored, I'm at the point where I want them to just pay the 10/$300 or announce they're out on both.
-
It isn't one month it is 6 weeks, but I wouldn't rule it out.
-
I'm at the point where I'm pretty convinced both Harper and Machado are going to sign with the "mystery team." someone not even on anyone's radar.
-
Honestly, if that is the case I think Machado is going to sign with a team that has ST in Florida. I think he's going to Philly guys.

2018-2019 Official NBA thread

I agree with this, and approve of this message. -
They'd be stupid to do that. He doesn't fit the window unless he signs an extension, which is highly unlikely. He only has 3 years of team control left, right? He's worth more to a team ready to win now if he's performing like a TOR starter than he is to the Sox. Do you know what is horrible about this whole thing: Even if Moncada turns it around and becomes the star everyone thought he would be....they're going to lose him only two years into the window. I'm almost to the point where Moncada and Lopez are more valuable as trade chips than they are to the Sox. I don't see them ready to rock and roll until 2021. They have only 3 years of team control at that point, players are going to start getting expensive. I don't know what they could have done better, but they needed to get talent that was all going to come up together rather than in waves. When your talent comes up in waves, the players from the first wave are probably going to be gone before you do anything in terms of winning. If the Sox could have held Moncada down until June 2018, not only would it have been better for his development, it would have saved them the potential headache of him leaving early in their window. If they land Machado or Harper, and Moncada and a pitcher or two explode this season, they would be better off trading their prospect capital for proven stars and accelerating the hell out of the rebuild. You can't play the long game forever. Go grab Sale, trade their prospects for players that will help now with team control that are available, and just go fucking win. That is what the Brewers did, that is what the Reds are doing. You can't be stupid about this. You have to get players with three years or more of team control, otherwise you're just wasting prospects at that point. The window might only be 3-4 years, but you have to maximize it. I've always said that this is going to look more like the Royals than the Cubs or Astros.
-
Yes, but then I realized it really doesn't matter. They don't get that time back at all, unless they keep him down for the majority of 2020 which is not a good idea. He'll have a year and 45 days by ST 2020. They'd have to keep him in Charlotte until mid June at the earliest to gain an extra year of control. If they're willing to keep him down until July, it makes sense. Otherwise he starts 2020 in the rotation. They need to keep him down long enough so by the end of 2020 he has less than 2 years service.
-
I don't disagree with a lot of what's been said here....The only thing I truly disagree with is that he's already hopeless...dude is 24. He's about to get caught in a numbers game, but I honestly think the Sox will end up trading Rodon to open up a spot in the rotation, unless he signs an extension which is unlikely. I also think they're going to start the season with Banuelos, Covey and Fulmer duking it out for the 5th spot, and if any or all suck, they'll bring up Dunning, Cease or whomever. The Sox can't afford to be infinitely patient, and I think that there is a distinct possibility that he gets caught in a numbers game and figures it out elsewhere. I think what they do with Kopech in 2020 depends a lot on how Giolito does this year. If he takes a huge step forward, and explodes (ERA under 4), then I think Kopech starts 2020 in Charlotte and comes up around Memorial Day when they gain the year of control back. (He has to be down for 45-50 days or so to get the extra year back) If Giolito continues to suck, I think he goes down to Charlotte himself at the beginning of 2020. He still has one option left, and they're going to give him every opportunity to figure it out here. No matter how bad he is, I can't see them using his option in 2019, unless they have decided to completely give up on him, in which case he should be traded for a blocked prospect or something.

Frank should cost $5 at DH and Edgar Martinez should cost $4.
-
I know, but I was assuming that was because the Sox would have had to eat the majority of Robertson's contract to get it done. If they could have had one more decent prospect thrown into the deal(someone like Erick Fedde), I think they should have done it.
-
Great post. The Nationals tried to fix something that wasn't broken. However, I'd think that if Giolito was tearing it up for Washington, if they didn't break him, then the Sox probably end up with Luzardo in the Eaton deal. It's a shame the Sox didn't eat the remainder of Robertson's contract to get him. Before they traded Luzardo to Oakland, there were conversations about the Sox swapping Robertson for Luzardo back in the winter of 2017. Would have been a huge get and maybe would have partially made up for the Tatis boneheaded move.

As of August 30th, 2018 This is what Fegan wrote after a game, vs the Red Sox(WS champions btw) that Giolito dominated their lineup for 6 1/3 innings. His line that night: 6.1 IP, 2H 1 ER 2 BB 8K. Another game from August 3rd 2018 @TB 7 IP 2 H 1 ER 3BB 6K On both of these nights, he showed the TOR talent is still there. I'm not saying that he's going to be great or anything(nobody knows that for sure), I'm just saying the talent is still there, and to wait and let it play out. Both of these teams won 90+ games last year. Remember that. If you were going to rate Giolito's season, his 1st 15 starts were awful, his next 5 were meh His next 10 were good, and his last 5 were bad. He's growing as a pitcher, and the Sox are in the position that they can afford to give him time to figure it out.

I'll take your word for it. I was confused because people don't really use ERA+ anymore, they use ERA-, which is subtracting the difference from average(100) instead of adding it. It is the same stat, just presented differently. That is why I thought there was a possibility he was serious.
-
You never know with people, they could not have a grasp of what an ERA+ of 150 actually looks like.
-
You do realize that only 3 pitchers had an ERA+ of 150 or better in the entirety of baseball in 2018, right? DeGrom had an insane season and his ERA+ was 155. MLB Top 5 in ERA+ DeGrom-155 Snell-154 Bauer-150 Nola-141 Freeland-139

https://theathletic.com/788331/2019/01/29/after-getting-help-in-his-rehab-from-lucas-giolito-michael-kopech-is-dedicating-this-year-to-being-unapologetically-myself/ This article is about both Giolito and Kopech. Gio is taking Kopech under his wing for the TJS rehab process, along with Gio's HS buddy and teammate Max Fried. If you have a subscription, I suggest giving this a read, as Giolito is watching video of himself last year and when he was at his best. He talks about his delivery being out of sync due to having his arm behind his body(Textbook example of flying open) and what he's doing in his offseason training to correct the issue. This begs the question: What do you need to see from Lucas Giolito in 2019 to give him another year in the rotation?

What is the ceiling for Manny Banuelos?
Jack Parkman replied to vilehoopster's topic in Pale Hose Talk
BTW, Banuelos topped out as the #13 prospect in baseball in 2011. He was 20 years old at that time, and during that year is when the injuries started. If he's truly close to his 2011 form, I wouldn't discount him being a late bloomer after injuries slowed him. He'll be 28 on OD. It isn't out of the question for pitchers to figure it out in their late 20s after being top prospects and flaming out. It happens more often than people think. -
What is the ceiling for Manny Banuelos?
Jack Parkman replied to vilehoopster's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This topic completely depends on if their scout is correct about Banuelos stuff being what it was as a top prospect. If so, the upside could be the Sox version of Arrieta. This guy was a top 40 prospect 5 years ago. -
I just wish we could turn this site back into Soxtalk.com instead of Machadotalk.com We all need to quit wasting time discussing this until he signs, whether here or elsewhere. We've all beaten this this dead horse to its skeleton. There is nothing left to discuss until the dude makes a decision. This thread has gone on AT LEAST 10 different tangents.
