  1. A rebuilding year for the Sox, as the team was never a serious contender but still managed to finish 2nd (80-82) in a week AL central, 9 games behind the leading Indians. For the First time since 1990 Frank Thomas wasn’t the big star on offense having the worst season average wise in his carrer. Thomas hit .265 with 29 homers and 109 RBI’s. The big star on offense was leftfielder Albert Belle who hit .328 with a club record 49 homers and 152 RBI’s and adding 48 doubles. 3rd Baseman Robin Ventura came back from injury and hit .263 with 21 homers and 91 RBI’s. Leadoff Hitter Ray Durham (.285) hit 19 homers and stole 36 bases. Rookie Magglio Ordoñez hit .282 with 14 homers and 65 RBI’s, while another Rookie Shortstop Mike Caruso hit .306 and stole 22 bases. CenterFielder Mike Cameron had trouble making contact and slumped to .210 with only 8 homers and stuck out 101 times. Rookie Jeff Abbott (.279) played well as a part timer and hit 12 homers and drove in 41 runs in only 244 at bats. On the Mound the team struggled, Jaime Navarro (8-16) was hit hard and ended up with a 6.36 ERA. James Baldwin was 13-6 but struggled too. Rookie Lefthander Mike Sirotka (14-15) led the team in Innings Pitched and Jason Bere made a comeback but was released July 16th. A couple of more Rookies Came up and pitched well, right hander John Snyder went 7-2 and Lefty Jim Parque 7-5. Out of the Bullpen Matt Karchner had 11 saves but was eventually traded to the Cubs and Bill Simas had 18 saves after taking over for Karchner and another rookie Bob Howry added 9.

Al through a freak Injury in spring training to 3rd baseman Robin Ventura and bad decisions by Management the Sox managed to stay in contention for most of the season, but on July 31st and with the Sox only 3.5 games behind owner Jerry Reinsdorf made a major trade with San Francisco saying no one would catch Cleveland and the Sox finished second (80-81) in the AL central 6 games behind the leader Cleveland Indians. Frank Thomas led the league in hitting with a .347 average hitting 35 homers and driving in 125 runs. Free agent Acquisition Albert Belle (.274) hit 30 homers and had 116 RBI’s but no other hitter had over 55 RBI’s. Designated Hitter Harold Baines hit .302 but was shipped off to Baltimore in another trade. Lead off hitter Tony Phillips (.310) was traded even sooner to Anaheim. Second Baseman Ray Durham (.271) had 33 steals and rookie center fielder Mike Cameron (.259) had 23. Dave Martinez continued his solid play off the bench with a .285 Average. Doug Drabeck was signed as a free agent and went 12-11 but with a high ERA of 5.74, Another Free Agent Pick-Up Jaime Navarro flopped and went 9-14. James Baldwin struggled too with a 5.25 ERA but finished 12-15. Lefty Wilson Alvarez (9-8), Veteran Danny Darwin (4-8) and Closer Roberto Hernandez (27 saves) were part of the mentioned trade that brought a package of young players to the Sox. Matt Karchner took over the closer role and had 15 saves. After the Season Manager Terry Bevington was fired and Replaced by Jerry Manuel
  7. The sox made somewhat of a comeback in the AL central as they finished 85-77 2nd in the AL central 14.5 games behind the Cleveland Indians. Frank Thomas, Robin Ventura, Harold Baines and Danny Tartabull were the hitting stars. Frank Thomas was second in the league in hitting with a .349 average while clubbing 40 homers and driving home 134 runs. Robin Ventura had the finest season of his carrer with the bat hitting .287 while hitting carrer highs in homers (34) and RBI’s (105) and won another Gold Glove. Baines had a solid return to the Sox hitting .311 with 22 homers and 95 RBI’s, Right fielder Danny Tartabull (.254) slowed by injuries previous seasons hit 27 homers and had 101 RBI’s. Ray Durham (.275) stole 30 bases and utility man Dave Martinez filled in nicely from the bench hitting .318 adding 10 homers and 53 RBI’s. Right hander Alex Fernandez was the staff ace after the trade of Jack McDowell to NY in the off season. Fernandez was 16-10 with a 3.45 ERA and led the team in strikeouts with 200. Lefty Wilson Alvarez (15-10) had a 4.22 ERA and Veteran Kevin Tapani was 13-10, The staff was rounded out by rookie James Baldwin who went 11-6 and was second in the Rookie of the year voting. Roberto Hernandez had a fine season out of the pen with 38 saves and a 1.91 ERA. Another rookie, Matt Karchner had 7 wins in relief.

  9. After the success of the previous 4 seasons the Sox fell off and had a miserable season on the field finishing 68-76 3rd in the AL Central 32 games behind the leader Cleveland Indians. With the team 11-20 Gene LaMont was fired and replaced by Terry Bevington who ended up 57-56. Once again Frank Thomas led the team in Hits (152) batting average (.308) Homers (40) RBI’s (111) and walks (136), Robin Ventura continued his consistent play hitting .295 slugging 26 homers and bringing home 93 runs. Center Fielder Lance Johnson (.306) again led the league in triples (12) and right fielder Mike Devereaux hit .306 but was traded to Atlanta before the season ended. Utility man Dave Martinez hit .307. Righthander Alex Fernandez (12-8) was the only winner in double digits and led the team in strikeouts (159) and ERA (3.80) Lefty Wilson Alvarez (8-11) and righthander Jason Bere (8-15) struggled all season and ended up with a 7.19 ERA. Lefthander Jim Abbott (6-4) pitched well but was traded to Anaheim before the deadline. Out of the Bullpen Roberto Hernandez had 32 saves.

  15. Well I dont know cause Cleveland was comming strong and there was still 52 games left. Mcdowell didnt pitch that well that season either did Roberto Hernandez

When it all seemed the Sox would be heading into post season play again, The Players strike stopped the season and eventually canceled the rest of the season, and the Sox finished first 69-44 in the new American League Central. Frank Thomas once again was the big start hitting .353 smashing 38 homers and driving in 101 runs in only 399 at bats. Being named the American league MVP for the second straight season. Designated Hitter Julio Franco (.319) also had a superb season hitting 28 homers and driving in 98 runs, 3rd baseman Robin Ventura had a another good season hitting .282 and Center Fielder Lance Johnson (.277) again led the league in triples with 14. Rightfielder Darrin Jackson came back from cancer to hit .312 and Ozzie Guillen hit .288. Lefthander Wilson Alvarez (12-8) and right Jason Bere (12-2) led the team with 12 wins while Righthander Alex Fernandez added 11 wins. Righthander Jack McDowell slumped a bit and ended up 10-9 but tied with Bere for the team lead in strikeouts with 127. Roberto Hernandez had 14 saves but a high ERA of 4.94.
