A disappointing year for the Sox after a good start the team slumped and was inconsistent for the most of the season, but managed to finish second (81-81) 13.5 games behind Minnesota. Magglio Ordoñez led the way hitting .320 with 38 homers and 135 RBI’s. Paul Konerko (.304) was solid adding 27 homers and 104 RBI’s. Frank Thomas came back from injury and after a slow start ended up hitting .252 with 28 homers and 92 RBI’s. Kenny Lofton (.259) signed as a free agent in the off-season started off hot but cooled off and eventually was traded to the Giants. Second baseman Ray Durham (.299) was traded at the deadline as well. Jose Valentin (.249) had another good power season hitting 25 homers but was moved around the infield once again, Leftfielder Carlos Lee (.264) hit 26 homers. Joe Crede came up in the second half and hit .280 smacking 12 homers and 35 RBI’s in 200 at bats. Mark Buherle was once again the star on the Mound going 19-12 and leading the team in ERA with a 3.58. Dan Wright Followed in wins with a 14-12 record and led the team in strikeouts with 136. Jon Garland was 12-12 and Todd Ritchie who was acquired in an off season deal failed miserably with 5-15 record and a 6.36 ERA. The bullpen was solid, Keith Foulke who lost his job as closer had 11 saves, Rookie lefthander Damaso Marte had 10 and fireballer Antonio Osuna (8-2) came back from injury and added 11 saves of his own.

A rash of injuries to key players and the pitching staff and a slow start, (even tho they recovered somewhat from June on) crippled the Sox hopes of another trip to the playoffs and eventually the Sox Finished 3rd (83-79) 8 games behind the Front running Indians. One of those Injured was Desginated Hitter Frank Thomas who tore a muscle diving for a ground ball and was out for the rest of the season batting only 68 times. Magglio Ordoñez was the star hitting .305 while smacking 35 homers and driving in 113 runs while stealing 25 bases. Paul Konerko (.282) was solid hitting 32 homers and driving in 99 runs. Carlos Lee slumped a bit a but hit 24 homers and drove in 85. Jose Valentin (.258) was moved around some and struggled with the glove, but had his Finest power season hitting 28 homers. Lead off hitter Ray Durham (.267) had 20 homers and stole 23 bases. Jeff Liefer (.256) hit 18 homers knocking in 38 runs plat toning with Jose Canseco (.258) who was signed June 20th and added power hitting 16 homers and driving in 49. Royce Clayton (.260) set a club record for fielding percentage by a White Sox Short Stop fielding .988, Clayton came back nicely after a horrible start in which he was hitting .099 in June. But the Sox suffered mostly on the mound with Injuries to James Baldwin, Jim Parque, Antonio Osuna, David Wells and Cal Eldred. But in the mist of the bad Luck lefty Mark Buherle Emerged and Went 16-8 and had a 3.29 ERA. David Wells went 5-7 but was lost in june, James Baldwin (7-5) was traded to Los Angeles. The only other double Digit winner was Right hander Kip Wells who finished 10-11 after starting the season in the Bullpen. Another partime starter Sean Lowe pitched well and was 9-4, Rocky Biddle was 7-8. Out of the Bullpen Keith Foulke had 42 saves but had 9 loses. Bobby Howry added 5 saves.

I did read correctly, But I wasn't talking about his tenure with the Sox, I meant the Brewers before the Sox got him. HISTORY!!! With the Sox he's had 2 trips to the DL which is good

Why would the Sox wanna be involved in a three way deal sending Randy Johnson to a possible playoff Rival? Doesn't make sense. Red Sox fans are paranoid and if Kenny does this deal he needs to be shot and hung by his balls

Hmmmm isn't that Oft Injured?

A key trade for talented but off injured Shortstop Jose Valentin and a on-field brawl with the Detroit Tigers brought this team togheter and when no one expected it the Sox Finished first 95-67, 5 games ahead of the Cleveland Indians, ending Cleveland’s Reign of 5 straight years winning the Central. Frank Thomas made a comeback to his old form hitting .328 while smacking 43 homers and driving in 143 runs, Magglio Ordoñez shined again with a .315 average while hitting 32 homers and driving in 126 runs. First baseman Paul Konerko (.298) had 21 homers and 97 RBI’s. Carlos Lee (.301) added 24 homers and 92 RBI’s while Shortstop Jose Valentin had the finest season of his Carrer hitting .275 adding 25 homers and 93 RBI’s. Lead off Hitter Ray Durham (.280) hit 17 homers and stole 25 bases, Chris Singleton (.254) fell off from his rookie season but added 22 steals. Another key Addition was the signing of third baseman Herbert Perry who was waived by Tampa Bay, Perry hit .308 with the Sox and played solid defense. On the Piching front Lefthander Mike Sirotka (15-10) led the team in wins and ERA (3.69) Right hander James Baldwin was 14-7 and won the all star game. Lefty Jim Parque was 13-6. Veteran Cal Eldred came back after a series of Elbow injuries to post a 10-2 record but was re-injured. 2 righthanders Kip Wells (6-9) and rookie Jon Garland (4-8) pitched well at times. In the Bullpen Bobby Howry had 7 saves starting the season as the teams closer but eventually lost his job to Keith Foulke who had 34 saves and a 2.93 ERA. Lefty Mark Buherle (4-1) came up after the all star break and helped in the pen. But the Sox who led the Major league’s in runs scored with 978 lost the Division Playoffs to the Mariners 3 games to none. After the Season manager Jerry Manuel was Named manager of the year.

Another rebuilding year for the Sox with the Motto “ The Kids can Play”, the Sox finished second 75-87, 21.5 games behind the leading Cleveland Indians. Right Fielder Magglio Ordoñez had a breakout season with a .301 average while smacking 30 homers and 117 RBI’s . Frank Thomas struggled through a calf injury and eventually was shut down for the rest of the season, Thomas hit .305 but for the first time in his carrer failed to hit over 20 homers and drive in 100 runs, hitting only 15 homers and driving in 77. Second baseman Ray Durham (.296) hit 13 homers and stole 34 bases. Two more rookies came up to the Sox and showed promise, Center Fielder Chris Singleton (.300) hit 17 homers and brought home 72 runs while Left Fielder Carlos Lee (.293) hit 16 homers and drove in 82 runs. First baseman Paul Konerko was solid hitting .294 and was second in homers with 24 and drove in 84 runs. Catcher Brook Fordyce hit .300. Shortstop Mike Caruso who fell off from his rookie season struggled in the field and with the bat hitting .250. Pitching was the problem again with Jaime Navarro (8-13) having another horrible season with a 6.09 ERA, James Baldwin was 12-13 and Mike Sirotka was 11-13, Lefty Jim Parque struggled with an Injury to a finger and ended up 9-15, John Snyder went 9-12. The positive of the pitching staff was the bullpen led by Bobby Howry who had 28 saves and righthander Keith Foulke adding 9, Rookie longman Sean Lowe had 4 wins.
