QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 10:04 AM) You do realize Contreras was virtually unbeatable after the All Star break? Why would you trade a #1 pitcher for a guy who even you said would bat ninth? I wouldn't. I'm just saying that Taveras is not a "scrub." Oh, what has Anderson done in the pros? Besides that .176 BA/OBP in 13 games? :rolly

QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) 13 doubles in over 600 plate appearances? Virtually no eye ball? He had a .325 obp while hitting .291... this is quite a feat. He is not believed to be one to grow into power so that will always hinder him. I wouldn't care about his lack off power (13 f***ing doubles c'mon)... if he had a godly obp. He is best suited for a fourth outfielder. 2005 OBP... Podsednik: .351 Tad: .342 Rowand: .329 Uribe: .301 Everett: .311 A.J.: .308 Juan Pierre: .326 OBP, .276 BA, 19 2B, 2 HR Considering the generally poor OBP of Sox players last season and the fact that Rowand's measley 16 stolen bases ranked #2 on the team, he'd be a decent #9 hitter at the very least and, given that his OBP wasn't much lower than Tad's, he'd be a viable #2. Juan Pierre doesn't hit for power either and Taveras' numbers are already comparable to his. And I'd take Pierre as my #2 hitter any day. With Taveras entering his second full year in the league, he's bound to get even better. Again, it's pretty short-sighted to call Taveras a "scrub."

QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) Taveras is a scrub as far as i am concerned and i would hate to have him on the white sox. Taveras his something like .290 and stole over 30 bases last year... and plays a very solid CF. That's pretty far from a "scrub."

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 05:21 AM) Keep Jose. If neccessesary ship him at the deadline if we absolutely need to fill a hole on our team. I'm pretty sure thats what Kenny has in mind. Yep. Taveras and Qualls for Contreras would be a fair deal for most teams, but probably isn't a good idea for one that is the favorite to repeat as champs and has already has a promising young CF. Kenny should stand pat for now. There's no need to trade Jose if we don't have a hold to fill elsewhere.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 04:06 PM) Well I'll work my 40-45 and put in another 8-10 a week as a volunteer, making a difference in my community, and spending time with my family. I guess family time and volunteerism isn't as important to hard working conservatives as it is to socialists and liberals. You keep working hard, putting in your 12 hour days, and get all you can, I'll keep giving. Well, I'm happily married, vounteer through my church, and donate to charity on a regular basis. And I'll go out on a limb and say that I probably make less money than you. I guess that socialists and liberals really don't know much about hard-working conservatives. You keep volunteering, spending time with your family, and thinking that you're a better person than me. I'll do the former two and put in the extra hours at work as well.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 04:06 AM) I'll tell you something, in all honesty. The rhetoric you guys put out here has about driven me to the point that I won't even consider voting for any democrat for any office. I'd never say never. There are some really good Dems out there (Liberman, Bayh, Richardson, to name a few). Unfortunately, the party has changed significantly over the past three or four years. I mean, my God, Howard Dean is their face now. I can't imagine how many moderates he, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, etc. have alienated.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) Bloggers influence stories on every other network. So what? I just figured between your hate on AAR and MSNBC, you might be Bill O'Reilly. After all they seem to be pet enemies of him. If you think there's a war on Christmas - I might just be convinced. Bloggers don't influence stories on networks as much as you think... unless they're given air time, of course. AAR and MSNBC aren't important enough to "hate." And Bill O'Reilly is on vacation right now, so I doubt that he'd be talking to you. Since you love AAR and "Countdown," you must be Keith Olbermann, right? :rolly
-
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 01:52 PM) What are you, Bill O'Reilly? Um, no, but I agree with him on that issue. Why should bloggers, who are not held to any journalistic standards, be featured on legitimate news shows? (That's "who," not "what," BTW.)
-
Unfortunately, networks like MSNBC legitimize their crap.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:58 PM) Who the hell is Alex Woodson and why would Baltimore possible want a rookie ball pitcher. According to mlbtraderumor.com Sox have two offers on the table for Tejada. Option 1: Jose Contreras, Juan Uribe, and one minor league prospect for Tejada. Option 2: Brandon McCarthy, Juan Uribe, 20 year-old southpaw Alex Woodson, and another minor leaguer for Tejada. In this scenario, the White Sox would get cash back from the Orioles in the third and fourth years of Tejada's contract. The O's won't take Option 1 because they have no need for an expensive, aging pitcher who is in the last year of his contract. However, they might be interested in Option 2. That said, I'd like KW to wait until June or July before he makes another move. If our guys are scoring runs, there's no need to part ways with McCarthy.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) No that's way less than the going rate actually. If stupid people want to pay $250 just to have their name mentioned on air, that's their business. Similarly, stupid people will also pay $50,000 for a commercialized army vehicle that gets 12 mpg. "Market value" doesn't always translate to "fair price" or "smart way to spend money." Link me to the post where I said that I know more about the radio industry than you. :rolly
-
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:06 PM) You're right, when I was a promotion director at a station with 70,000 listeners in Michigan we only valued the on-air mention at $55. I guess with 3 million listeners it wouldn't be worth anymore. I suppose I underestimated how incredibly stupid some people are.
-
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:56 AM) Try paying for a live mention on a national network and see if you get it for less than a grand. Stern's last show was getting spot rates of 10,000 dollars for a 60 second time period. CBS is obviously cash desperate to ask for that much money for essentially nothing but air. So, are you trying to compare having one's name mentioned on the air by a radio host vs. getting 60 seconds of air time when you do the talking? :rolly

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) Free stuff = bumper stickers, tote bag, mention on the air. Pay if you're willing. It's not free. Those three items cost $250.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:46 AM) I agree, Republicans bashing a business for exploring a revenue stream is absolute hilarity. Yep, that's almost as funny as you saying that three bumper stickers, a tote bag, and one's name being mentioned on the air is worth $250... and is not a request for a donation, but a legitimate sale of a product.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) But I find it totally contradictory to say that AA is clearly losing money because they're asking for money when guys like O'Reilly, Limbaugh, etc., are all doing the same thing, and that the statement I've been trying to respond to. Then you simply don't understand the difference between soliciting donations and the sale of a legitimate product or service for a fee. Air America would have a lot more to offer for $250 than three bumper stickers, a tote bag, and one's name mentioned on the air if they weren't in financial trouble.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:11 AM) Sean Hannity has as much experience as Rush Limbaugh. None. He hosted a talk show. Olbermann hosted Sportscenter. They are both about equally qualified from what I can figure. Except for the fact that Hannity and Rush have been doing political commentary for a hell of a lot longer than Olbermann. Oh, and they know what they're talking about. That kind of helps. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:12 AM) They are selling something different than O'Reilly. They are selling passion and ownership in what its fans see as a "movement." You may call it pathetic, I call it - and most bottom line folk in the communications industry see it as "maximizing revenue." Thank you for making my point. Air American is making solicitations for donations because they need the money. PBS does the same thing. It's not the same as O'Reilly or Rush selling products on their web site to make extra money. If O'Reilly needed money, why would he give a huge chunk of his profits away to charity?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:24 AM) ??????????? He's gone up relative to mid-November, thanks in no small part to the Iraqi elections and his PR offensive associated with it, but that's because he was down even further in November. Compared with September, he's basically right back where he was. That depends which poll you look at. Also, the errors in many of these polls overlap, which would mean that the numbers aren't statistically different. Gas prices have also gone down signficantly since October, which has undoubtedly helped. As opposed to the "PR offensive" from Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi that called Bush a liar and a criminal? What a joke... :rolly

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) It's always gotta be an argument with you doesn't it. I just thought that was interesting. I think polls - are mostly - full of s***. If you would've stated that point earlier, I would've responded differently (or not at all). FWIW, I agree that most polls are worthless.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) Fun bit of trivia. After Clinton got impeached, his approval ratings skyrocketed over 70%. Another fun bit of trivia: America was at the peak of an unprecedented economic boom after Clinton was impeached. And yet another fun bit of trivia: Bush 41's approval ratings sank after kicking Saddam out of Kuwait and securing low oil prices for America. Not-so-coincidentally, this country was in a minor recession at the time. And one last fun bit of trivia: Bush 43's approval ratings have gone up ~10% over the past four months, coinciding with lower gasoline prices and further removal from this summer's record-breaking hurricane season. Approval ratings more accurately reflect the state of the economy than anything else.

QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) Now I know an offer of Contreras, Uribe, and possibly a prospect sounds like it won't be enough, but I'm thinking it just might be enough. Here is why: Jose Contreras had a monster second half and continued to dominate in the playoffs. That is what the Orioles remember the most. Juan Uribe had one of the most amazing defensive performances ever in Game Four of the WS. This is what the Orioles remember. I'll say it again: The Orioles won't want Contreras unless they're contending right now. Since they lost Palmiero, Sammy, and Ponson, I think it's fair to say that they're not making a run for it this year. Only teams that are in a position to win right now would be interested in Contreras. The Orioles will want McCarthy, Garland, or Buehrle in any deal that involves Tejada. If I were KW, I'd immediately say "no" to the latter two. I might be willing to trade McCarthy if the Sox are struggling at the plate in July.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) So Air America gets bashed in this thread for selling exactly the same sorts of "Memberships", but then when I try to turn it around and point out how O'Reilly, Limbaugh et al. do exactly the same thing, I get that as a reply. Air America wants $250 for a freaking bumper sticker, a tote bag, and "special mention." Sorry, but that's pathetic. At least O'Reilly and Rush sell products and services for a reasonable price. And the profits of most of O'Reilly's products go to charity. How much has Air America donated to charity? QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 10:20 AM) I think Olbermann is smarter than you think. "Smart" and "informed" are two different things. I never said that Olbermann is dumb. I guess that I just don't care for sportscasters who suddenly think that they're qualified to be political commentators and sound clueless when attempting to do so. I'd much rather listen to someone with actual experience/education in the field (Hannity, O'Reilly, Kasich, Matthews, Scarbrough, etc.). You mean like Walter Cronkite?
-
QUOTE(rangercal @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 10:02 PM) Count and uribe would make the most sense to me in any deal for Tejada. The O's, who are re-building at this point, wouldn't want an aging, inconsistent pitcher like Contreras who costs ~ $8 million and is a FA next season. If I were them, I'd want either Buehrle, Garland, or McCarthy + Uribe and a minor-leaguer. And if I were KW, there's no way in hell I'd trade Buehrle or Garland.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) Poof our attendance will be 2,526,422 Average crowd 31,190 This is what I think is a realistic view. I'd say that's about accurate. What did we draw this year? 2.2 or 2.3 million? A slight increase is about what I'd expect.
