QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 19, 2007 -> 10:52 AM) I don't see what the point is of figuring out what started this. It's obvious the kid was nuts - he was pyschopath who snapped. Why does there need to be a reason, be it music, video games, movies, or our culture? We diagnose crazies and argue that it's not their fault because some wires in their brain connected the wrong way or they suffer from some sort of chemical imbalance. But when it comes to crazy people acting out there always has to be some outside influence that caused it, especially when dealing with younger people. The kid missed the boat on normal development. It obviously wasn't a result of his environment as his sister grew up to be a Princeton grad with an Economics degree (who is now working for the State Dept on rebuilding Iraq). He should have been put into an asylum a long time ago. He should never have been allowed to attend a public university (or more importantly, STAY at a public university after being labeled a harm to himself) and he definitely should not have been given the opportunity to purchase a gun. The ONE gun related law I'd like to see change would be a background check on any mental health issue. Crazy people should not have guns. Word.
  2. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) under ANY manager he belongs in AAA. Erstad has shown the ability to bunt, you have to give him that. His leadership may also be a benefit. I wouldnt pay too much attention to batting stats at this moment, as the whole team cant do anything at the plate. You need to wait a least a month to make any offensive judgement on Erstad. I did give him credit for that. Hence, the statement "save bunting." And I would pay attention to his batting stats, since he's doing what he's done the last 5 years. We know what we're getting out of Erstad. This is it. Granted, his average will be up a little bit, but he is not a good hitter. He is, in fact, a terrible hitter at this point in his career. And your first statement is just incorrect. Once you recognize the fact that Erstad is terrible and that he will be no where near his 2000 numbers, you will see why it is incorrect. Not every manager values useless veterans over promising younger players.
  3. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 11:01 AM) They both cant hit, and they both can field. The only other way of Ozzie figuring out who is best is intangibles like work ethic, focus, leadership, and the ability to do little things for a team to win. It has come to light that BA may be unfocused when it comes to preparation. Also he cant really bunt, try to move a runner over, hit to the other field, or walk. Ozzie feels more comfortable in the experience of a Vet trying to do those things over a kid. Not to mention it has been said that Erstad has already become a vocal leader on the field and in the clubhouse. BA should be in AAA where he belongs. I don't know that Erstad has shown the ability to do any of those things all that well either at this point, save bunting. I think we can expect both to be hitting around .250-.265 by the end of the year. Anderson has some power. Erstad has none. Both play good D, however, Anderson's is still superior. But yeah, you're right. Under this manager, BA belongs in AAA. Under a competent manager, he's the starting CFer out of Spring Training.
  4. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 09:47 AM) What I don't f***ing understand is why BA isn't playing when he's the younger, better fielder, and had a great spring training... while Erstad continues to suck fat balls and goes out there EVERY DAMN DAY! What's to understand? This is nothing new. Since BA did not light the world on fire in the first three months of 2006, there is nothing he can do to adjust Ozzie's view of him. Outperform Podsednik on the field and at the plate the rest of the year? Split time with Mackowiak. Outperform Erstad in Spring Training? Sit on the bench. Ozzie's mind is made, and he's a bit of a stubborn prick. According to Ozzie's lizard brain, BA doesn't play the game the right way. Erstad does. Actual performance means nothing. On edit...I probably should have said, "since BA was beyond terrible at the plate his first three months..." Didn't light the world on fire is a bit of an understatement.
  5. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 10:03 AM) Anderson wants more at-bats and doesn't want to play winter ball, per the Suntimes. It's impressive that a guy with a something like a .600 career OPS doesn't think he needs to get some at-bats in the winter to get better. And he thinks his .143 batting average deserves some more major league at-bats this season. I think it would be best for all if Anderson found his way to a new organization as soon as possible. The batting average is meaningless, especially considering the pitchers he's had to face so far. Although at this point, I'm beginning to think it best that Anderson go to a new organization as well, even though we'd be selling low. He has no chance to develop with Ozzie as his manager.
  6. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 13, 2007 -> 09:06 AM) Are you from The Omen? Destroy life? We all took the Cleveland and Tuesday night's loss as hard as the next person Unless your girlfriend woke up to find her kitten in a dryer, you did not.
  7. QUOTE(shoota @ Apr 12, 2007 -> 11:10 PM) As long as our guys play hard and have fun, I'll be happy. GO TEAM! Whoa there guvna'. This isn't little league. If our guys play soft and look miserable but sweep the tribe, I'll be happy. If they play hard and smile, only to get swept, I will need to destroy life to satiate my anger.
  8. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 10:35 AM) ooo i had no idea. thanks! Reviewing the new andrew bird or modoest mouse anytime soon?
  9. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) Balta, Am I to understand that because Brian Anderson has got himself into playing-shape, adopted a professional attitude, and stopped disrespecting his employer to the media, the White Sox are to make-nice and hand him a starting position? Imagine such preposterousness in any other profession. That would be the equivalent to a mid-level-manager getting dismissed for two weeks because of office misconduct, only to return after the two weeks with a positive attitude and a public-adoption of professionalism and asking for a promotion. There are no hand-outs here. If you want to start for a Major League ballclub, earn it. Don't speak it. He might be talking the talk, but he is not yet walking the walk and that is why veteran competition has been brought in. The cream is going to rise to the top. If he earns a starting spot with his play on the field and has been absolved of his previous indiscretions by his superiors in the organization, I can not imagine the organization blackballing the kid. All he has done thus far in 2007 is what should be demanded from any minor league player vying for a spot on the Major League roster. These are not insurmountable odds...quite the contrary. Where are the examples of Anderson disrespecting his employer again?
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:13 PM) Well considering his service time he'd be making about $900k on most any major league club despite being terrible. I'm sure someone could have use for a $900K pinch runner, so I'll give him that. Yeah, I saw what you were saying after I posted that.
  11. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:11 PM) Wow, you'd think they'd have more than a 1 line blurb in an unrelated article about such news... I saw the Uribe headline and figured you mislinked...my bad. No worries...I was impressed with my memory when I realized it only got the last sentence in the article when I searched for it.
  12. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:07 PM) Plus he's making about $2M too much and is the only real leadoff option on the club in the manager's eyes. They put way too much faith in him. I think its much closer to 3 million. 2.9?
  13. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:06 PM) Whats with the link about Uribe? Are you trying to use misdirection?! Read the last sentence....
  14. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) From what I've heard, they not only raised ticket prices, but have outsold last year in a same-time sales comparison. As of 2/21, we were ahead of last year's pace, and are already nearing 2 million. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines
  15. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 10:11 AM) Well like I said, if that starts happening, Ozzie needs to adjust the lineup. Iguchi's career OBP is about .005 higher than Erstads, so does it really matter THAT much?! That's pretty deceptive, considering he has reached his career average only once in the last 6 seasons, while averaging a terrible .317 OBP in that span. So yes, it does matter that much. Erstad will not get on base anywhere near the rate that Iguchi will, unless he reverts to a form he hasn't been anywhere near the past few years, and hasn't shown so far in Spring Training.
  16. QUOTE(pcullotta @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 09:07 AM) Ozzie specifically said Erstad would bat #2 against Righties. I highly doubt he would put that 1,2,3 combo out there against a Lefty. Plus, we usually use about five lineups a week so I'm sure there will be plenty of variations. Plus, we have Toby Hall to do the catching against some southpaws and he hit .292 against lefties last year. Which doesn't make a lick of sense since Iguchi hits righties well.
  17. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) If he slugs .538, I'll eat a catcher's mitt. He hasn't had a batting average as high as .282 since rookie ball. ESPN projects his batting average at .248 His Pecota projections are probably a little generous. But I'd eat a catcher's mitt if he bats .248 this year. This guy is being praised as a probable ROY candidate by far more than BP right now. Then again, if Young was still on the Sox, he wouldn't have a spot anyways, what with Erstad, Pods, and Ozuna clogging up Ozzie's lineup card.
  18. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 06:44 AM) Right now, I think Erstad is playing great...and he won't make the rookie mistakes that Anderson may make in criticial situations due to nervousness I don't know if there's anything to show Erstad is a better hitter than Anderson at this point. He will probably hit for a slightly better average, but have that offset by a putrid slugging pct and OBP. Why sacrifice the defense for such a marginal improvement, if there is any at all? This is incredibly frustrating to see two guys who have not done anything to earn a starting spot on a contending club the last few years be handed the job.
  19. QUOTE(shoota @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 04:19 PM) What outfield prospect did KW give to Arizona a couple years back? That would be the frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year, projected as a 282avg/538slg/ 20HR/20SB Chris Young. But hey, we lost a much needed reliever (for last year anyways), but got back Vazquez in return. That trade will go down as the worst Williams ever makes.
  20. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 12:14 PM) You actually believe that all of those things need to happen for us to win the Central? That's f***ing ridiculous. Pretty much. Uribe could repeat 06 if everything else on my list happened and we'd be alright.
  21. 81 Wins. 4th place. We have too many holes this year, and the AL Central is too strong. If Contreras stays healthy, Buerhle rebounds, Garland remains in 05/6 form, Vazquez can get past the sixth inning, Podsednik does something good, Erstad plays like he hasn't in years, Uribe improves his OBP, Dye doesn't regress too far, and Thome stays healthy/productive all year, then we can win the Central.
  22. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2007 -> 05:18 AM) Hey so did Bill, and apparently that's totally cool. Depending on how the lying to Congress stuff goes, I agree with them. Granted I am curious who is stealing personal emails and distributing them to the press, but lying to Congress is a crime, at least in my eyes, and deserves to be treated as such. 100% yes. Clinton didn't lie to Congress actually.
  23. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 15, 2007 -> 08:24 PM) The bottom line. Bill Clinton lies better then George Bush. /thread Did Janet Reno lie to Congress? No. Gonzalez did. That would probably be the more accurate bottom line.
  24. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 8, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) I understand the charges, but I still question the guilt. And of course Clinton got away with it, he gets away with EVERYTHING, a prime example of that is the love he gets in the black community despite what his record in the state of Arkansas says in regards to how he feels about african americans (not good). My biggest issue with the Libby thing is if you hear what Fitzgerald and the jurors even said, they sounded more convinced and more like they were convicting Cheney than Libby. It's just a strange case since although I don't doubt Libby perjured himself, I don't even know if Libby, Fitzgerald, or the jurors have any idea if he is guilty with how confusing the case is. His conviction to me seems more like a statement against the administration than anything, and although I don't have any problem with those, it shouldn't send somebody to jail. Judging from your posts, I'm going to make a pretty safe assumption that Fitzgerald and the jurors had a very good idea that he was guilty, and a much deeper understanding of the case than your own, hence his conviction on four of the counts. That the jurors seem to think he was a fall guy for this administration, and more accurately, the VP's office, does not take away from the fact that Libby still committed crimes. Committing 2 counts of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements, results in jailtime. If he didn't want to go to jail, he should have cooperated, and not concocted a fake story to obstruct justice.
  25. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 2, 2007 -> 05:07 PM) I can defend it, but then you'd just call me a liar and a kool-aid Bush loving neo-con, so why should I bother? I don't believe I've ever called you any of that, I think the only comments I've ever made towards you is in regards to your propensity to avoid having a substantive discussion in favor of using sarcasm so lame Ann Coulter wouldn't use it.
