  1. Hawk: "It's a shame that he had such a great game and got nothing out of it." Sad, lowered voice. "Dadgumit." DJ, also in a sad voice: "Yee-ess."
  2. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 11:24 AM) He's not famous enough. He's only one of the most celebrated men of the last sixty years. RIP. Just recently took a class on Russian literature in the Soviet age and he was a prominent figure in the second half of the class.
  3. Those "stats" are probably bogus. People make mistakes, but Edwards' case is not one that makes me sympathetic for him at all.

  5. QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) I'm defending Ozzie. And most managers. If you have a starting pitcher and you trust him, you let him in to pitch deep into the ballgame and let him pitch out of trouble at the start of the sixth inning. If Gavin's going to be a good pitcher or we're going to trust him as a good pitcher there's no way to do that without letting the man pitch. Ozzie made the right move by far. He made the right move for himself and for Gavin Floyd, who needs to be allowed to pitch. Ozzie made the right move for starting pitchers everywhere, in fact. And with that said, go Sox.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) You're defending Gavin??!!! Good for you Greg I'm defending Ozzie.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) So we have Thornton warming up....why in the hell did Ozzie leave Gavin in to face Casey? Terrible managing continues There's nothing wrong with letting Floyd in to pitch. A pitcher's job is to pitch deep into ballgames. And Ozzie having some faith in his starter is not "terrible managing."
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) How many hanging pitches will we let Clay get away with today? Gavin and Clay have been hanging pitches all day today. Good third inning so far for Floyd, though.
  9. "Some guys, their behinds get so tight you couldn't pull a greased tee out with a pair of pliers." --Hawk Harrelson.
  10. I did my first interview with a minor league baseball player this week. Here. It's awesome. His dad played for the Sox for a really short time and led the American League in pinch-hits in 1986.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 10:46 PM) Some dude said this: Well, he's right you know. ... Buehrle pitched great tonight.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) I've been a big proponent of what i call "America First". Many try to brand it as "isolationism". My basic a belief is you let locals deal with their issues. Only go over if it gets out of control. One of the things people forget is that 9/11 and the current "terrorist hate" for America is rooted deeply in our constant pocking around in the middle east. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 and at the time many of out 60s and 70s middle east operations seemed like a good idea. But it clearly blow up in our face... literally. We didnt get involved in WW2 until we were drawn in. We could debate for days if we had gone in sooner maybe the war could have been minimized. No it's not. It's about the Caliphate. It's about establishing a world-over Islamic government.
  13. What's so special / obnoxious about green jacket boy?
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) And since we're deservedly bashing the man...hell let's note the old story about what happened to their other son a decade ago. Actually, I was recently informed of this excerpt from Bob Shrum's book: Edwards is a weird bird.
  15. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:20 PM) If this is who I think he is, then yes he did go to school with me and is probably the most biased fan in the world. He really refuses to listen to other's opinion about anything else. Doesn't that come through?
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:17 PM) Being the "Hustler from Glencoe" is like being the Ann Landers of a football team. Exactly. I put a lot of subtext in there, and my tongue was planted firmly in cheek as I let him be himself.
  17. This is my latest article, "The Happiest Man on Earth," a profile of a Cubs fan who invited me to watch the minor league game at Wrigley Field with him last Tuesday. To quote my editor, I have "unearthed a Cubs fan who gives all of Cub Nation a bad reputation." Rat Arnab is quite the character, and I think you will enjoy reading about him and the game as much as I enjoyed writing about them.
  18. I think Longoria should be unanimous, and that's not an insult to anyone else. Alexei's been fine, and so have a few other guys, but there's no comparison with Longoria.
  19. Most high-strikeout high-homer numbers guys flame out with time. Typically they are not fundamentally sound, they don't play good defense, and they get hurt from swinging so hard on every single pitch with all of their weight and energy behind it. I wouldn't put money on Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder having long healthy, productive careers because I expect them to flame out eventually, probably sooner rather than later, like Cecil Fielder. They're fun to watch swing, though. Of course there are exceptions, but not many, and fewer in the Hall of Fame.
