QUOTE (Wedge @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) Since Crain is probably gone at the end of the season, getting anything in return would be a net positive. Can't we extend him a QO at the end of the season and if he declines get a supplemental pick or sign and flip if he doesnt?

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 07:12 AM) No matter where Cecchini plays, his offensive skill set is something the sox desperately need on the current club And have nothing near major league ready from the minors. And the guy stole 51 bases in 118 games last year. It's like criticizing Ms. America because she sang poorly in the talent portion of the competition. His type of bat and ability to get on base is what teams can build around for years. I agree, off of everything I've read, he is best suited for the hot corner and power is the last tool to develop. Cecchini is exactly what this line up and organization needs. Patient hitters that understand how to work the count, Sickels said his ceiling is a Bill Mueller / Kevin Youkillis type. Seeing how he is likely a year to a year and a half away that would give the Sox time to fully understand what they have in Conor Gillaspie. Gillaspie's season screams to me at least of a Michael Cuddyer like player[check out his 26 year old season in '05 and what Conor is projected to finish at]. Conor plays above average defense at 3B, that has a fair amount of value(1.5-2.5 maybe a 3WAR player), he has struggled against LHP but if the sox give him a clear understanding finishing this year and going into next that they're going to give him the full time job, he strikes me as the type of hitter to make the adjustments. The sox would be well served to target players like Cecchini and Adam Eaton. I hope the sox move Reed at the deadline or in the offseason to the d-backs for the likes of him and owings, all though Owings strikes me as a Khalil Greene clone. A young core of Eaton, Cecchini and Semien (whom some feel will wind up as a utility player)I personally feel has the tools to be more of a Marcus Giles type of bat in the MI and another recent comp due to his statistically-based age/level comp is Bernie Williams(HT:NorthSideSox72 for bringing that quote from Matt Garrioch to the table), excite me. Eaton could very well develop into a Denard Span clone in CF. Take those three and supplement them with Phegley provided he continues to hit like Jason LaRue (which I would consider a win for the sox development process), De Aza, Gillaspie, Viciedo if he continues to develop into El Caballo2.0 and this version of Beckham and . Of course this is all predicated on a lot of "Ifs" but with Quintana doing his best Andy Pettitte impersonation, Santiago looking like the love child of Liriano and Santana, Chris Sale being the best 13th overall selection since Paul Konerko or Manny Ramirez, John Danks being removed a full 18 months form his surgery and getting back to his old 3WAR ways, and one of Johnson or Rienzo producing 1.5WAR. I really like the sox chances competing next year as a dark horse for the wild card and going forward seeing how pitching peaks far earlier than hitting and the sox have young pitching

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 07:23 PM) Kid just keeps hitting, if he finishes over 290 or around 300, he could make some top 100 lists I'm sure. agreed, there is a lot of talent at SS across the minors but i could see him coming in around 70-90 on some lists.

great job by Rienzo, i watched the futures game and that cutter is nasty! sox havensome intresting arms between him and Johnson and Dannish

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 07:13 PM) Oh wow. That could be a huge deal Indeed since june Dunn has put up this line .271/.384/.535 - .919 and over the last 3 years here is how he has hit at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington .250/.400/.571 - .971 power is at such a premium right now because of the run scoring enviroment in Mlb i would'nt be supprised to see some quality low level players come back provided the sox paid off some salary. I would be looking at one of jorge alfaro or luis sardinas between a pending suspension and a possible retirement combined with their current standings i believe they're ripe for an overpay.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 06:32 PM) Misinformation Hahn strikes again! This sounds like the Sox trying to get the best offers from all the teams, not just ones with position player prospects. No way do the sox not get a top 30-60 position player back in a Peavy deal. The 2nd prospect, maybe a SP. But not the key guy. I'm really hoping Peavy goes to Boston and garin cecchini comes back our way, people are comparing him to a Bill Mueller type. Garin is about a year to a year and a half away and would give us time to figure out what we have in gillaspie.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) If it's true that the Red Sox are offering Middlebrooks for Peavy, then why the f*** hasn't Hahn pulled the trigger????? because middlebrooks has a 4% walk rate and a near 28% strike out rate? If peavy goes to BOS, I want Garin Cecchini and Blake Swihart coming back. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 11:08 PM) Walk off homer in extras for Keenyn Walker. Typical "show stopper" walker.....smh...

Semien is a homer shy of the cycle and they're in extras

beautox replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I dont want middlebrooks at all he has no idea how to take a walk . In this sox rebuild sox should focus on people who can control the zone. -
If this is true Hahn has some balls, Martinez is an excellent looking top of the rotation arm, that gets questioned because of his stature and i hadn't read about the shoulder tendinitis.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 09:25 PM) If Gordon goes to DL, don't tell me you're not a little tempted to see Semien play in the bigs I'd be incredibly tempted to see him brought up

I think as a whole fans over value tools and undervalue performance and floor. The cards under jeff luhnow developed an amazing pipline of college aged mid-low floor baseball players.

QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:50 AM) 21 Year Old Season - A+ Desmond - G 129 HR 13 RBI 45 SB 27 CS 11 .264/.357/.432/.789 Semien - G 107 HR 14 RBI 59 SB 11 CS 5 .273/.362/.471/.833 Semien (Adjusted for 129 Games) - G 129 HR 16 RBI 71 SB 13 CS 6 .273/.362/.471/.833 22 Year Old Season - AA Desmond - G 93 HR 12 RBI 44 SB 12 CS 8 .251/.318/.406/.724 Semien - G 97 HR 12 RBI 39 SB 17 CS 5 .271/.394/.438/.832 Are those really that drastically different? Both players project to hit around .260-.280 & 20/20 with Semien holding an advantage in the power department so far, it's not a perfect comparison but I found the similarities between the two players pretty interesting. Also, you're not being a jerk, just extremely condescending. first off sorry if I came across condescending. to me yes they are to completely different hitters. Semien doesnt just have an understaning of the strike zone he controls it and so far this season he is showing more power than desmond did at AA. I also agree that as a whole we are undervaluing what Marcus is doing at AA as a 22 year old with the tools defensivley to stick at SS.

The sox should be looking to add near major league talent in 3B,CF,1B and RF in addition to that, high upside arms a year and a half to two years away and catching depth. The one thing the sox system has is MI and Corner Ofers one of: Thompson, Jacobs, Hawkins, Walker, Day has to become a major league regular in addition to what they get in trade deadline/offseason. I would like to see the sox move Peavy and Crain to AZ and target Eaton & Davidson and Owings. Owings' stats are gaudy but he appears ML ready and the sox have a lot of interesting prospects that could be up with the club in the near future in Semien and Sanchez if it doesn't work out. Sanchez is still really young for AAA and will get another go around next year and for July Semien is on a tear for July .303/.439/.606, after a fair amount of research he personally reminds me of Marcus Giles and if we can get that kind of production for SS that would be incredible. Behind both of them you have Tim Anderson who has been off to a great start at A and Mich Johnson at A+ it is still to be determined if both can stick in the middle infield but I'm sure the sox will give them every opportunity to find out. Trade Rios, Ramirez and Lindstrom and eat a fair amount of his salary to PIT for Bell, Glasnow and Lambo. Bell adds to the mix of the previously mentioned outfielders Lambo is sitting at AAA and I have a hard time believing the pirates are going to give him the opportunity to produce or back up as a 4th outfielder on a contending team. Lambo has put up an interesting line at indianapolis and he was a former top dodger prospect and still age appropriate at 24 .285/.357/.562 - .919 10.3BB% & 25.2K%, immediately bring him up to replace Rios and see what we have in him a ML regular or a 4th Ofer. Trade Reed to the red sox for Garin Cecchini, Anthony Ranaudo and Blake Swihart. See if you can dump Keppinger and 6m for an arm like Dellin Betances or Dixon Llorens, someone similar in nature to that. DH - Dunn L C - Phegley R 1B - Viciedo R 2B - Beckham R SS - Owings R 3B - Davidson R LF - De Aza L CF - Eaton L RF - Lambo L See if Gillaspie can transition to a quality utility player. Nate Jones to Closer, auditions through out the bullpen. Look at an outside shot at the second wild card spot in '14 and deep farm system.

QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:22 AM) Semien's numbers look pretty similar to Ian Desmond's numbers, they were both in A+ ball at age 21 and AA at age 22 so the comparison is pretty close. Semien edges Desmond out in a lot of categories including fielding, the only real statistical advantage Desmond had over Semien was in stolen bases. In all honesty I don't see that comparison at all, In all seriousness how are you getting that comparison and how does that come to your mind? I'm not trying to be a jerk. graph taken from fangraphs Also with regards to his defense link

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 11:47 PM) Martin Perez, Luke Jackson, Luis Sardinas, Rougned Odor, Nomar Mazara, Ronald Guzman, Neil Ramirez (maybe?), Jorge Alfaro (hurt), Joey Gallo (hurt) Also, top 10 guy entering the season Cody Buckel has suffered a complete implosion. He had a great year last year and had an outside shot to make the big league club entering this year. He threw 9.1 IP in Double-A with a 20.25 ERA (29 runs) with 28 BB. No typos there. They assigned him to extended spring where he seems to be rotting away. John Sickels says "pitchers will break your heart" in reference to him and he's right. Crazy collapse. If Cruz does get suspended in the near future combined with the rangers lacking offense and being outside the playoff window, I wouldn't be surprised if Profar became available. This time last year everyone was saying that Olt wasn't available and untouchable and now he was just shipped out of town for a rental. In his short time at the major league level Profar hasn't lit the world on fire and he isn't moving the incumbents off their respective positions any time soon.

quick side note i just did the math on Giles' BABIP that season it was .312 very close to Semien's .310 Also when calculating BABIP why don't they take into account sacrifice bunts?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 10:41 PM) Semien Trout comparisons looking more legit Doing some more digging, Marcus Giles looks like a fair comp both in terms of age, level, handedness and position. Giles at age 22 in 533 plate appearances at AA in the southern league had the following line .290/.388/.472 with 72BB/71K (13.5BB% | 13.3K%) and 17HR and 25SB/5CS. There are 43 remaining games for the barons so it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Seimen surpass those totals and if that happens i believe we're looking at a top 40-60 prospect in all of baseball (note: after that season in AA Giles was regarded as the 54th best baseball prospect). I think i found my comp for him. A potential 15/15 MI that might have the ability to stick at SS we can only hope that maybe he would produce a 6.5WAR season like Giles did in '03. Last note Semien is 12 points below his career MILB BABIP so that average should come up a bit.
