QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:23 AM) Kannapolis beats Asheville Castillo 2-4 2B his avg is .444 in kanny so far. .373 on the season between kanny and bristol but he doesn't hit for much power Jorge Castillo was leading the Appalachian League in hitting at the time he was promoted. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Miranda is promoted back to W-S to make room for Beckham. It would be a nice way for Miranda to redeem himself since he started the year at W-S. He's been very good at Kanny.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 06:35 PM) And Lucas Harrell... but if they aren't pitching, Allen is pretty much the only one to keep an eye on, isn't he? Besides Allen... Gartrell is interesting. I'd keep an eye on him. Negron has been surprising. He's likely to be promoted to Charlotte next year. Other than that... not much to look at besides pitchers. Of course, it was different before Cook and Cole Armstrong got promoted.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:58 PM) 1 Steven Register COL 27 2 Joselo Diaz TEX 18 3 Juan Cruz ARI 13.75 4 Kiko Calero OAK 13.5 Scott Patterson NYY 13.5 6 Grant Balfour TAM 13.12 7 Rick VandenHurk FLA 12.86 8 Armando Benitez TOR 12.79 9 Octavio Dotel CHW 12.47 10 Carlos Marmol CHC 12.23 Thank you. I guess I should have qualified it with an innings minimum. Cruz is legit. He's pitched 35 innings. Balfour... very legit. And Dotel. The others don't have enough innings to make it meaningful. Register has faced one batter all year... but he struck him out. Should quit while he's got a perfect record. -

Is there a pitcher in baseball with a better K/9 than Dotel? -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 07:15 PM) As for Broadway, this is just sad. One thing about it though, I bet if Broadway fails, his career as a White Sox will not extend beyond 2008. You act like he's a 30 year old journeyman or something. He's 24. Teams don't dump 1st round draft pick pitchers at 24 years old.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) Sounds like Gio looked pretty good in his debut last night. I saw some ESPN action and his fastball was at about 92 and he showed a real good breaking ball Last night was the second game he's started. He had people swinging at curveballs that practically bounced off the plate. They looked like they were coming in waist high and then the floor dropped out. I can just imagine some of the threads/posts if Javy has a crap game and Gio beats us.

Gordon "Slayer" Beckham Signs for 2.6 Million

QUOTE (Jeremy @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) Alexei's made some slick plays at 2B but he looks wild out there at times and his fielding metrics are very mediocre at 2B. I'm not sure he can handle SS particularly well. I'd prefer to consider Beckham the SS of the future until he shows he can't play the position. We can try Alexei at SS next season and see how that works. Try him at shortstop and see how it works? Keep in mind that he was a shortstop. That is his natural position. He's out of position playing 2B.... this is the first year he has ever played it. Regarding his arm... I can't imagine why anyone might think he doesn't have the arm to play SS. The guy has a freakin' cannon. If we moved him over, he'd have one of the top five arms for a SS in MLB right now. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Also, I heard last night we'll face Gio this wknd. That should make for a fun game thread. Gio vs. Javy on Sunday

It's hard to tell how good/bad Broadway has been in the minors this year. The team may have been having him work on specific pitches or working on control, etc. Remember, the organization's goal is not to wow AAA competition, it's to prepare guys for the next level.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:37 PM) Personally I would like to see him stay in B-ham and get the playoff experience. He'll get playoff experience in Birmingham this year since they qualified by winning the first half. But I too am worried about rushing him too fast. This is the first year he's shown any real plate discipline. They ought to put him next year wherever they have the best batting coach and keep him working on taking walks and reducing strikeouts.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Didn't Josh Fields put up great numbers in his 1st season for Charlotte though back in 2006? Yeah, he was IL rookie of the year.
-
The way Allen is driving the ball this year, he might put up some serious numbers in a hitter's park like Charlotte. And with several of the pitching staff from this years Barons moving up to AAA next year + a couple of Charlotte hold-overs, the Knights could be a very interesting team to watch. (Birmingham leads the Southern League in team ERA; has the lowest team WHIP; has given up the fewest homeruns; and is second lowest in walks.)
-
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) What's Allen's total numbers on the season now? http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=450315 .274/.372/.536... .908 OPS 405 at-bats; 31-doubles; 21-homeruns; 60 RBIs

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 11:09 PM) Valido! Valido! Valido! His stock has never been higher, 3 HR & 27 RBI. He'd defy logic and become a stud for the Pirates. .323 BA in his last 10 games. Sell high!!! Before he wakes up.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 09:04 PM) does anyone know if Clayton Richard had to forfeit his opportunity to be on Team USA for Baseball with his big league call up? Yes, he did.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) I would really like to see what Daniel Hudson and Dex Carter can do in low A. Look at their numbers and they got nothing left to prove in rookie ball. But then again, the organizataion might want these guys to end on high notes and with confidence. Yeah. The minor league teams wrap up the first week of September. Not much sense in moving guys around for just a few games.
-
In the games I've listened to... mid 80's max. Meh... then again... what do I know? I never thought DeWayne Wise had a chance of a callup this year either. If Childers doesn't get called up in what is looking like a career year in the minors... then he probably never will.
-
QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 09:37 AM) Is there any verification from other sources that this deal even took place? Answering my own question... German is showing up on Charlotte's roster today.
-
But Wasserman can throw the ball 90mph once in a while. That and his funky motion is just enough to trick some hitters.
-
The problem is that Childers doesn't throw hard enough to break glass. Which is why he is a 33 year old pitcher with decent minor league stats who has only 7 innings in MLB in his entire career. (IIRC properly he got a chance to throw in a game at the end of spring training and got pounded...)
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) I still can't find any word on who we traded away. Is there any verification from other sources that this deal even took place?

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) My point is, I'd rather spend the money on something more valuable e.g A bonafide stud CF or a excellent 2nd baseman such as Orlando Hudson. BTW - Orlando Hudson went down with a season ending wrist injury last night. Second year in a row he's had a significant injury to the same wrist. I'm not knocking him, because I like him. Just wonder how that may affect his health going forward and the Sox potential interest in him.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) I'm sort of surprised we aren't seeing Childers come up. I think major league hitters would light him up like a pinball machine.
-
Hmm... A guy capable of striking people out, but who has trouble aiming the ball. Sounds like another Coop project. Is he going to Chicago or Charlotte?
