I'm a little confused. Floyd won his 12th game but lost a bet? LOL. You'd think that if a guy thought he was going to do well... and then he did... that he would be winning bets not losing them.

5 errors by Winston-Salem tonight??

Charlotte over Pawtucket 3-1 Birmingham beat Montgomery 5-0 Winston-Salem lost to Potomac 7-5 Kannapolis lost to Greenville 8-3 Great Falls beat Casper 17-5 Bristol lost to Kingsport 8-5

I hope the Twins and Royals play 20 innings. Tire the Piranhas out before they go back to face the Yankees for 3 games.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) I really hope Bekcham doesn't start in Bristol. I'm not sure it makes much of a difference this late in the season. Chances of him playing in more than a dozen games before the end of the year are not very high.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 11:40 AM) This won't last long, Olney said we are going after a veteren pitcher, most likely Washburn, off the waiver wire. Washburn has had a few bad games this year, but overall he's been pretty serviceable. He's kept a bad Seattle team in a lot of games. In other words, we could do worse. My concern is what it will cost us to get him. If Kenny can pull it off by eating salary rather than giving up much in the way of talent, count me in.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 10:13 AM) Hopefully the kids in the outfield are warned of the flying objects leaving the ballpark. LOL. Yeah, maybe they should have a Lance Broadway hard-hat day. On the bright-side, his splits suggest he might do decently against right-handers. But lefties have brutalized him this year. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=473560

I expect we'll see Broadway get a start against Kansas City. For several reasons it makes alot of sense.

Nanita 2-4. Winston-Salem beat Potomac 9-4. Another impressive outing for John Ely. 6 innings; 1 run (0 earned) on 3 hits; 6 K's; and 3 BBs. Every 'knock' I've seen on him in this thread (or others this year) is based SOLELY on the results of one month that came on the heels of him returning from an injury. How does his stuff or makeup "suck" when everything else about him before and since that one month suggests that he is a very good pitcher? That makes absolutely no sense. The guy can throw a hard sinking pitch 93-95 mph. And he has an above average changeup. He is an extreme groundball pitcher. And he strikes out 3-4 times as many people as he walks. Those are facts. It's also a fact that he was brutal a month coming back from injury... and that he has been MUCH better since... falling right back in line with his very good career stats. A guy who pitches like Egbert will get a chance somewhere in MLB if he doesn't get it here.
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) If his stuff was that good he wouldn't be having such a tough year. Those stats hold up. He just had a rough start after coming back from injury. Assume you write off May due to the injury and recalculate his numbers... 13 starts; 81 2/3 innings; 3.64 ERA; 79 strikeouts; 19 walks Now look at last year in Birmingham when we was healthy the entire year... 28 starts; 161 2/3 innings; 3.06 ERA; 165 strikeouts; 44 walks. Projects out very similarly... In fact his entire minor league body of work looks very similar. So, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt for the month after coming back from injury that stands out as an anomoly against all the other stats.
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 01:22 AM) I don't know first hand, but I don't think he actually has the stuff. He needs to be more pinpoint with it to get out AAA hitters consistently. If he does, he might be able to develop a career as a back of the rotation guy. I mean if people think Clayton Richard can pitch in the bigs for a sustained career, Egbert isn't far behind. To me 'the stuff' means a fastball over 90mph and a couple of other respectable pitches a guy can get over the plate. He's got that. He's got an average fastball, but both his changeup and slider are above average. I mean... what's not to like about a guy with a 8-9 K/9, a K/BB that ranges between 3-4/1, and who generates alot of groundballs???
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) well, if Richard could succeed at Charlotte (and before him Heath Phillips), I have a feeling that the AAA international league struggles vs. soft tosing lefties who work fast (I am assuming Whistler does this) and throw strikes. I wouldn't be surprised if Whisler has some sort of hitch in his delievery thats throws some hitters off. Remind me why Clayton Richard should be considered a soft-tosser?? He averaged around 91mph with his fastball while he was up here. Had several 93s... and even popped up to 95 on a couple. (Stats reported by Inside Edge scouting service... not the TV radar gun.)

Charlotte @ Syracuse Knights lose 2-0. A well pitched complete game for Wes Whisler... 8 innings; 2 runs on 8 hits; 3 K's; and 2 BB's. Owens went 2-4 raising his BA to .274... starting to get into respectable range. Getz 1-3 with a walk. Cook went 1-3. He's 5-12 with 4 walks in the 4 games since he's returned to the lineup. Montgomery @ Birmingham Barons lose 2-0. McCulloch with a very nice outing. 6 innings; 2 runs on 7 hits; 7 K's; and 2 BBs. But the Barons couldn't muster up much offense against David Price. Potomac at Winston-Salem Warthogs win 4-1 Matt Long with another impressive start. (He's been very solid in his last 10 games.) 6 2/3 innings; 1 run on 6 hits; 8 K's; and 2 BBs. Retherford 2-4 with a homerun raising his season average to .294 Salvadore Sanchez 2-3 with a double. Shelby, Mollenhauer, and Persichina each 1-4. Greenville @ Kannapolis Kanny wins 4-2 Shirek... 6 innings; 1 run on 8 hits; 6K's; and 1 BB. Oney Guillen 1-3 Lots of other guys with 1 hit each. Ronnie Gaines (who?) with 2-hits. Casper @ Great Falls GF wins 1-0. Dexter Carter... 6 innings; 0 runs on 3 hits; 6 K's; and 1 BB. Carter (4-1) lowers his season ERA to 2.59 Lyndon Estill 2-4 with a double. Bristol @ Elizabethton (Twins) Bristol lost 3-1 Steven Upchurch... 5 innings; 0 runs on 1 hit; 5 K's; and 3 BB's. First baseman Jorge Castillo goes 3-5 raising his season average to .377. Castillo is now leading the Appalachian League in hitting.

Egbert has been an enigma. Sometimes brilliant... sometimes brutal. He's got the stuff... hopefully he can start to deliver it consistently.
-
Egbert had a 3.97 ERA over 5 starts in June and a 2.32 ERA over 5 starts in July. In those 10 starts he had 63 strikeouts vs. only 13 walks.

50th favorite WhiteSox player in 2008 maybe... Behind approximately half the players in Charlotte and Birmingham.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) i wish that were the case, but they are a 9 or 10 game win streak from being very relevant. As of today, the Tigers would have to go 35-14 in their remaining games just to reach 90 wins. A 71.4% winning percentage from now to the end of the season. Yeah, they still have a chance, but they are rapidly reaching the point of no return.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) You maintain that 90% win percentage, you can post however drunk you are. If he maintains that 90% win percentage, I propose we take up a collection to pay for his liquor.

I vote Julio Franco. That one made me laugh out loud.

QUOTE (forrestg @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:14 PM) September call up maybe? Very doubtful. They'd have to put him on the 40-man. I don't see that happening. Too many roster issues to deal with. For example: if they want to keep David Cook, he will have to go on the 40-man since he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year. Etc...

In the lineup on Monday 8/4. Got a hit in his first at-bat and drove in a run. Attaboy DC

I'd give Freddy a shot before Livan. Hernandez is horrible... and probably needs time to recover from all the forks Minnesota fans stuck in him.
