  1. Multiple reports of civilians being bombed in the streets of Tripoli, Libya.
  2. This is for BS: Americans could cut beef consumption by 2.5% and produce enough food to end global starvation (yeah it's pretty old but the math still works out AFAIK, and there's been some dietary debates here recently) We don't have a food scarcity problem; we have a resource allocation problem.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 21, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) That wasn't his point and you know it. He stereotyped all arabs there. It crossed the line from the discussion they were having (treatment of women in general in Muslim cultures, which is pretty abhorrent) to bigoted (all Arab men treat women badly).
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2011 -> 11:31 AM) Of course there is a difference. The Democrats are doing it. I think it's a question of quantity. edit: but, ultimately, it is still an abuse of the rules in the same way that cloture is abused in the US Senate. I just think it's worth noting the difference between doing it once to force debate on a bill and doing it hundreds of times to block just about everything.
  5. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 21, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) The defense is easy, Wisconsin voters voted in Walker and the legislature. Walker and the legislature have every right to use their numbers however they want. That's not a defense of his policy. edit: I guess it wasn't clear what "this" referred to
  6. Walker's steadfastly refusing any compromise whatsoever. Even one that gives him pretty much everything he wants but puts a sunset clause on the removal of bargaining rights. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/on...n-unions-vote/1 Please, Republicans, tell me how you defend this.
  7. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Feb 21, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) I know you like saber stats, ans none of those players WAR would have offset Kotsay's enough to make up 6 games in the standings. Swap Thome and Kotsay with the Twins--what's their record, what's the Sox? It's an unanswerable question, but it still highlights how bad of an idea the rotating DH with Kotsay was. Whether it cost the division is immaterial, and I'm very happy that KW corrected this problem.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2011 -> 09:36 AM) I'm still trying to understand how the left can vilify the right for using the filibuster too much, and then applaud their party running away to Illinois in Wisconsin. Well, there's a difference between repeated usage of the filibuster at historic levels to stop bills that have been debated and discussed and negotiated for months and stopping this train wreck of a bill that's had no discussion or negotiation but has a very big impact on the state of Wisconsin for years to come.
  9. QUOTE (Ranger @ Feb 20, 2011 -> 04:46 PM) No doubt they're better, but it isn't why they lost. Pitching (especially the bullpen in the last couple of months) screwed them last year more than anything else, and this year the outcome will again rest mostly on pitching. The 2010 outcome really had very little to do with Kotsay. I don't disagree with this at all. I don't know if the rotating DH was the biggest problem for the team last year, but it certainly was a decision that drew harsh criticism from about this time last year until Dunn was signed. Take away that glaring "oh my god how can they think this will ever work?!" and it requires a little more thought and analysis to criticize problems, failures and weak points.

  11. And, to be fair, there was also a more liberal blogger who was saying she got what she deserved because she supported the Iraq war. So the misogyny isn't restricted to conservative assholes.
  12. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/02corate.pdf eta: if your reasoning is correct (I haven't looked over those tables very closely), it means we can agree that the "tax cuts always pay for themselves!" line doesn't work.
  13. It's more generic "evil brown people are animals" racism to me. I think she'd be cool with white European Christians.
  14. Addressing the #1 really poor decision from last year in a big way that almost no one can argue with is a pretty good way to placate your fan base.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 18, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) Businesses have other alternatives to obtain money (investment), people normally do not. I just love the liberal mentality we've got right now. Instead of cutting government spending, we should increase taxes on everyone. Instead of actually paying off our debt, we should borrow MORE money to pay it off, the future be damned. Instead of addressing the 800 lb gorilla in the room (entitlements ruining every budget), we should run away to a different state to hide from our responsibilities. Instead of addressing the economy, we should devote a year of the presidency to passing healthcare reform that doesn't do jack s*** to fix the major problems of the system. I don't agree with HOW the governor in Wisconsin came about his mess. BUT, as NSS said, at least he's doing SOMETHING to TRY and address the problems of his state. And i'd argue further that the state unions are a big part of the problem since they've successfully negotiated with moronic politicians to get us to where we're at. Who wants to campaign to take away money from teachers/police/fire/civil workers? No one, but it's gonna have to be done at some point if states are going to fix their budget problems. You've missed the point. Businesses don't create jobs for the hell of it. Demand creates jobs. It's hard to generate demand if your pay is stagnant or shrinking and all of your basic needs costs (housing, food, medical, transportation) keep rising. Cutting corporate taxes won't solve that problem. It won't stem the ever-widening wealth gaps. It won't spur companies to invest some of the estimated $1.3T of money they're collectively sitting on. And, again, Walker created this budget problem and then used it to attack a political enemy and strip away workers rights. That doesn't lend itself to a rational discussion on whether public workers in Wisconsin need to pay more for their benefits (which they accepted in exchange for having lower wages than private sector on average). Democrats in Wisconsin didn't run away to "hide from responsibility." That's a terrible mis-characterization. They are doing this to force a discussion before the vote in response to large public protests.
  16. "This never happened to her or any other mainstream media reporter when Mubarak was allowed to treat his country of savages in the only way they can be controlled." How do you even begin to process that to respond to it?
  17. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 18, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) Yeah, but what's the source of the money they have to spend/invest with? Yeah, but what's the source of money that businesses take in as revenue? Businesses don't invest in capital resources and expand employment unless there's demand to be met. Demand doesn't grow very well when wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few at the expense of the many. Cutting corporate taxes while cutting workers' pay isn't going to spur demand. It isn't going to drive economic activity and increase Wisconsin GDP.
  18. Yeah, it's mostly a racist screed, not an attack on Logan.
