QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) StrangeSox are you talking about the killing terrorists thing, or the missile defense thing? Missile defense.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) So why haven't we heard anything about it? It couldn't be that he has to placate his bats*** anti-war groups and keep it on the hush hush, right? With that said, I do agree with you on the missle defense if he's proposed putting in a short range missle defense in its place. I haven't had a chance to catch up on any news today at all except here, so I don't know anymore then what you just posted. It was mentioned on the ultra-lib NPR report this morning.

Let me tell you how it will be There's one for you, nineteen for me 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman Should five per cent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman If you drive a car, I'll tax the street, If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat. If you get too cold I'll tax the heat, If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet. Don't ask me what I want it for If you don't want to pay some more 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman Now my advice for those who die Declare the pennies on your eyes 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman And you're working for no one but me.

QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) First, off, I do not believe the final plan will result in that big of a cut. But even if something that drastic occurred, will they quit and take an even bigger pay cut? What will any of those Doctors do to maintain their wages and life style? And depending on when this happens, where in this economy will they go? Financial services? Sales? Medical research? Possibly. I just do not see where their options are to quit and maintain anywhere near their salaries. And perhaps we should look at their salaries like we looked at the auto industry. Their wages are too high, benefit packages too generous, for their industry to survive, and like those well paid auto workers, the end is here. I think its the libertarian fantasy of "going Galt," which, at least in the novel, needs a utopia and a perpetual energy machine to work. Doctors aren't in unions, so its impossible for them to be making too much. Only union members make too much.

Barack Chamberlain abandons missile defense system!!!! Can't green the hyperlink. Missile defense just doesn't work and costs an enormous amount of money.
-
Nate Silver broke down the problems with this poll. Really, shouldn't "45% of doctors would quit" jump out and say "something is wrong with my polling"? Unless fervent libertarianism is overrepresented in the doctor population.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) I didn't know snakes had spines. Snakes have spines (they're vertebrates and descended from tetrapods) and sometimes even a claw! http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/09...tropy_handy.php

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) Yet 45% would consider quitting if congress gets its way. http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/A....aspx?id=506199 IBD's poll is so s***ty its not even worth comment. For perspective, they're the same people that said Steven Hawking would be dead under government health care.

So its just one giant handout to insurance companies.

Carter needs to just shut his mouth and build some homes. I don't think Buchanan is comparable because, as NSS said, Pat hasn't actually brought good to the world.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 15, 2009 -> 10:34 PM) Tonight's topic for discussion. When George W. Bush was President, more than a few celebrities embarrassed themselves. Britney Spears was even a "Singer" who did so. Why was George W. Bush not asked to comment on them, while Obama was asked (off the record of course) about his opinion on Kanye West? Probably because Bush was a stuffy, older conservative and Obama is younger and portrayed as "hip." Oh, and probably because he's black.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 15, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) There's a pretty big difference here. As a matter of fact, I'm not even going to waste my time if you can't see the difference, that's pretty ignorant. It's always different. Sorry, I had to. I agree with what you're saying here.

Sports teams who have "offensive" nicknames
StrangeSox replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Ones like the redskins should probably be changed and maybe Cleveland's logo. I don't care too much, though. -
Modern conservatives and neo-conservatives are not one in the same. Neoconservatives don't seem particularly interested in any sort of fiscal conservatism.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 14, 2009 -> 11:30 PM) And just who is it in these countries that can AFFORD to get private insurance? certainly not everyone. Sure, they have the same opportunity to purchase it, but then private insurance becomes a perk of the wealthy. Yeah, sorta like purchasing health insurance on your own so that you actually have choice is a perk of the wealthy in this country.

liberal bias!

private companies can't compete except for in all of the dozens of countries we can observe where it does. That's been my point. If the public plan really sucks balls, its not going to drive them out of business. We can look to countries that enact far more government control and see that this is the case. Your scenario just doesn't match reality.
