  1. We're beyond that thinking because its been eliminated from our society for decades now. Introduce it back in now, and see where we are again in 2050.
  2. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) Sometimes managers get more out of their teams than they should. Sometimes they get less. While this surely will surprise White Sox fans, Ozzie Guillen is a plus-3 this season, which means he has done a good job to hang around .500 with a team that has issues. The only other managers who have helped out their team as much, according to the Impact Factor, are Arizona's Bob Melvin and Tampa Bay's Joe Maddon. The managers having the worst years are the Yankees' Joe Torre and the Cubs' Lou Piniella, at minus-6 and minus-5, respectively. It's a surprise Torre's moves aren't working, as he—like the Braves' Cox—should be on his way to the Hall of Fame. Both Torre and Cox have career Impact Ratings of plus-36, the best in history. That's better than any manager enshrined in Cooperstown. Among those guys, Bill "Deacon" McKechnie, who won pennants with three of the four National League teams he managed, is a plus-29, and famed Yankees manager Miller Huggins is a plus-26. No one's likely to catch Cox and Torre anytime soon either. Tony La Russa checks in at plus-21. Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire is plus-19. Dusty Baker was a plus-18 after winning with the 2003 Cubs but slid to plus-8 before being replaced by Piniella (surprisingly a career minus-4 after the horrible start this year). from chicagosports.com (Phil Rogers) I did a quick tabulation on the rest of Guillen's career... 2004=-1 2005=+8 2006=+2 2007=+3 Overall=+12 It surprises me because I have no idea what this means or how they can possibly hope to quantify something like a manager's "impact factor."
  3. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 30, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) Their ERA is better than ours. And our WHIP is 1.62 as a relief crew. Only Tampa Bay is behind us. And how about leads/ games blown? I'd imagine this club is near the top. I know they've already blown more than the Twins did all last season.
  4. Balta, Where does that 500k dead Iraqis figure come from? That would be almost 350 Iraqis per DAY. That seems way, way too high.
  5. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) we dont need a juggernaut. All we need is bullpen pitchers that throw strikes. They dont all have to be that good. just three. Just throw strikes. And a complete offensive turn around. And we need to pitchers to start giving quality starts again.
  6. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:27 PM) ah he coulda. Nice philosophy. No other manager in baseball would have kept their closer on the bench in hopes we get a run the next inning with the heart of our order up. s*** who even knows if Bobby is healthy, oh wait, everyone on Soxtalk knows. The players suck ass AND Guillen makes at least one terrible move per series. Happy now?
  7. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:55 PM) Questec and the ump review is full of crap. Nipples to the knees over the big white thing in front of the catcher. How hard is that to figure out. You get one ump that doesn't call anything over mid thigh, the next guy only calls pitches above mid thigh. The next guy only gives the inside pitch but no outside pitch, the next only gives the outside pitch if you are blessed to be left handed. Its just sickening how bad these umps have been over the last few years. Then you get the argumentative jagoffs who think that I paid money to see them. They cant wait to toss someone. They should start suspending some of these fools or giving them a refresher in nipples to the knees over the big white plate. Correlate their pay for the game to the number of correct balls-strikes they call.
  8. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:50 PM) IMHO, both of those pitches they showed were balls. Definitely, but Jon's pitch was significantly closer to the plate.
  9. Jon cruises through another inning, 1-2-3.
  10. Wow, and where the hell was that pitch to Crede? 3, 4 inches off the corner? Are the umps sat down after every game and shown all of their dumbass calls?
  11. QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:46 PM) Cant blame him, the strike zone varies from half inning to half inning I cant argue with you here I've only been watching since the bottom of the fourth (didn't realize it was a day game). That strike 3 to Mack was an absolutely terrible call, though.
  12. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) Oh I don't disagree, Hawk makes more excuses for the Sox struggles than anyone in the biz. It is always someone elses fault. Hawk finally admitting that they were hitting and pitching like crap this series, but he's still very pissed at this umpiring crew. Weak pop to the 1B. inning over.
  13. Upon further review, it wasn't really even close to a strike.
  14. That was an embarrassing hack right there. Strike out, Dye gets a SB on a bad throw. I'm not sure that was a strike, though.
  15. Damn, that looked like it was going to be a solid hit off the bat.
  16. QUOTE(Steff @ May 30, 2007 -> 08:02 AM) But of course. I wish I worked at a job where I could eff up left and right and not be forced to take responsibility. Like KW and Ozzie? The under-performing players take plenty of flak here.
  17. QUOTE(Steff @ May 30, 2007 -> 07:56 AM) Another post blaming those at the desks. Yes, an upgrade would have been nice. But it didn't happen. So rather than blame the crap ON THE FIELD, continue to blame those upstairs. Makes no sense to me. These guys are MAJOR LEAGUE BALL PLAYERS. When they can't complete a play they should have learned in t-ball then they are to blame. JMO, of course... That crap wouldn't be on the field if KW had made the moves. Yes, they're MLB players, but they're not very good ones.
  18. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ May 29, 2007 -> 08:40 PM) But Damm it, when those bats finally heat up to balance out the stats, boy are the hitters gonna be hot in September. The weather is too hot right now, and the hitters are fatigued. Just wait until it cools off! Then the bats will come around!
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 29, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) I'm sorry, Danks is downright AWFUL tonight. Can't drop a curveball to save his life. This better be nothing but an aberration. With the way he's pitched thus far this year, there's no reason to think its anything but.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2007 -> 08:25 PM) Get him out of there....don't want his confidence to be destroyed. You know Ozzie wants to "give him a chance to win"
  21. Getting lit up again
  22. Nice swing at a ball in the dirt.
  23. Is ESPN covering his morning walk to get his paper? I can't believe the media attention that he's getting for going to a losing ball club. One old pitcher isn't going to turn that team around.
  24. QUOTE(Steff @ May 29, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Noted, agree, though I think that's a different animal. To Rock's point, many fans refuse to lay the blame for the current crap on those responsible. It's easier to criticize and critique decisions than it is to critique play on the field. We can all say "Ozzie should have pulled pitcher XXX in situation YYY, it was very obvious and made the most logical sense." We can all b**** about KW not really doing too much this off season. Those are things that we feel we could change or that we could do properly, in a sense. Saying "Konerko should really hit some singles to the gaps" doesn't go very far. Of course he should. There's not much discussion there.
