  1. Looks like he's on track to do substantially better than Clinton it the Dem candidate in 2016, but it wouldn't be enough to actually win. Another "good sign" for Democrats but they need to actually start winning some of these special elections. The sheriff in charge of gianforte's assault is a friend and donor, so expect that case to mysteriously go away.

  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 25, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) The Montana story is a perfect example. You've got a Fox news crew saying it happened, you have an audio recording confirming it to the extent that can... and yet the first reaction for some people is to believe that it didn't happen or is made up. Scary stuff. People are so, so stuck in the way they want the truth to be that they will act like toddlers. And by fact, I don't mean anything subjective. I mean actual events or data. The obfuscation of the concept of fact and embracing of ignorance happens all over the political spectrum, and it's not that the Republican Party is somehow unique in it. But Trump and his arm of the party have certainly taken it to a much more dramatic level then I've ever seen. It's one thing to look at, say, tax policy, and think that one party or the other is ignorant of how it works. That's a complicated subject with no objectively obvious best practice. But people are literally denying per se factual information and data. That's where it gets really, really scary to me. And, more scary, plenty of others are now cheering it on.

    Brexit

The Tory lead in the polls has been collapsing ahead of next month's election. It will be pretty interesting if calling the snap election blows up in May's face spectacularly, much in the same way that Brexit blew up on Cameron. https://twitter.com/SamCoatesTimes/status/867847777040183298
  7. It was a minor story that was briefly commented on here. Depicting it as some world-consuming outrage is just dishonest.
  8. translation from Der Speigel, but Trump looks like he wants to kick off a trade war with Germany.
  9. "why are people discussing things on this, a discussion forum?!" --There are lots of unnamed sources because this administration is run by extremely incompetent people and leadership has encouraged factionalism and backstabbing. Then, on top of that, you have tons of career public servants who are horrified at said incompetents and can't believe how dumb and reckless they are. There are lots of sources and bombshells because this administration is already setting records for inappropriate and possibly straight up illegal behaviour --Trump is still the guy who bragged about serial sexual assault on tape, who had over a dozen accusers come forward, and who was once accused of rape by his ex-wife. That hasn't changed, but there hasn't been any new news on that front. Do you think we should just be posting about those same things? --Trump had non-family members meet the Pope. He didn't have his deeply Catholic press secretary, who had previously expressed his greatest desire in life to be meeting the Pope, come with. That seems like a newsworthy if still minor thing. Should the news only report on things that will make textbooks 40 years from now? What does it harm you if they do or if some of us here talk about it a little bit?
  10. please don't import that drama to this thread! Based on the "serious injury" criteria, misdemeanor seems like the correct charge. Wonder what the House will do if they're looking at seating a convicted violent offender? j/k they'll seat him because he's got the right letter next to his name.
  11. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ May 25, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) I think felons are worse than a guy committing misdemeanor assault. Where was your outrage when Markahm elected a felon as its mayor earlier this year? Wasn't an national story, and reddy did say "violent felon" in here. Googling shows that the mayor was convicted of mail fraud in 1999 for defrauding insurance companies. Sounds pretty similar to Rick Scott. What's the bar for felony assault over misdemeanor? Chokeslamming someone to the ground and then punching them seems like it should treated as a pretty serious offense.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 25, 2017 -> 02:38 PM) To be fair, his children have to be a lot older than typical. Of course thats because unlike any other president, he's on his 3rd marriage. I thought about noting that since Clinton's, W's and Obama's children were all young, but Bush Sr.'s and Reagan's children were at least as old as Trump's and Carter's were pretty close in age.
  13. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 25, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) You are all being deliberately obtuse. There was never any coverage of who Obama traveled with. There was never any coverage of whether or not his press team was with him. You'd think with how often Trump puts his foot in his mouth you guyswouldnt have to make stuff up too. When I questioned Michelle Obama's place in the admin and why she should be deciding whether our kids eat tofu I was racist. Now everyone has an issue with nepotism. First Ladies typically have some sort of role in the admin, and that's not what happened when you asked "why does anyone care about Michelle Obama." There was all sorts of hysteria about Obama's travels from the rightwing media, including ludicrous claims that a trip to India was costing $200B a day repeated by members of Congress (it was a complete fabrication). Michelle Obama was hounded for a long time by conservatives for anything and everything but especially her travel (not a peep from them on the millions its costing for Melania to live in a golden tower in NYC). Nobody's making anything up here. Trump's administration is shot through with nepotism just as his businesses were, and he invented a position for his daughter and has dumped a ton of responsibilities on his son-in-law. It's not normal for the President's children to be so involved.

  19. QUOTE (bmags @ May 25, 2017 -> 12:57 PM) https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-alleged-ru...tive-1495724787 It's cool that a whole bunch of the GOP seems to at least be complicit in this.
  20. Some states allow you to change an early vote, but MT is not one of them. MT's voting patterns are atypical, but in most states, it's dedicated partisans that are early voting anyways, so those people aren't going to be swayed into voting for the other side by anything. Make voting a national holiday and have it last 3 days over a long weekend and some of the impetus for early voting goes away. Or just do what Oregon and Washington do and go 100% mail-in ballots. No more opportunities to mess around with polling places, polling machines, voting hours, etc. that way. Those long, long lines on voting day aren't something inspirational, they're a sign of a failed system.
