QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 01:11 PM) This is probably true. What is the biggest indicator this election? I think they said college degree was a bigger signifier than gender, religion, anything. Some of that would of course be affected by the age swings, but one thing with the lack of a "third place" like church is the views of people being segregated not by race but by class. Specifically it's a divide between college and non college whites. Every other demographic isn't even close. Fwiw Republicans typically win white college demographic by a decent amount. If you break it down even more, I think non college white women are close to even but trump's main core of support is non college white men.

The rnc abandoned dole in 96 to focus on congressional races, but that was because everyone knew it was a quixotic campaign and not because dole was a horrible person they couldn't be tied to. They still supported and endorsed him, it was more of a funding shift. I think you need to go back to goldwater to find a similar example of am anti establishment fringe wing winning the nomination and getting rejected by at least some of the party leadership openly in the general election. The parties had more ideological overlap/mixing at the time, though, so I don't know if it was as stark and jarring. The Democrats had gone through the dixiecrat stuff a little before that for example. Re: religion the reason that there are so many regional protestant denominations in America is historically due to ideological splits over slavery.

I saw something similar yesterday. It was a way for her to give moderate Republicans an "out" at the voting booth while also tying Trump and the worst elements of the reactionary right wing to all of the public republican figures who still endorse or support Trump, even if weakly. They can't back out now publicly without looking like they're siding with their mortal enemy Hilary Clinton. Obama set a similar trap back at the convention, but this time it's much more forceful after the last surreal month and now Bannon running the campaign.

The headlines on CNN yesterday and the way NPR started their story this morning were both "Trump, Clinton trade accusations of racism" so I'm not too hopeful. Trump flailing around with Anderson Cooper when pressed on supporting his claim that Clinton is a bigot and finally landing on "I don't know, maybe she's lazy" was entertaining. Another solid confirmation of TNC's thesis that many on the right only see racism as a rhetorical or political tool and not something people are legitimately concerned about and impacted by.

Clinton has a speech coming up in a bit about the Alt-Right and it's ties to Trump's campaign. Vox has a bit of a primer on exactly what the Alt-Right movement is: The alt-right is more than warmed-over white supremacy. It’s that, but way way weirder.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 07:07 AM) The AP tried really hard to find a scandal in the Clinton Foundation documents but there's really just nothing there. Yeah, a lot of noise from the extremely loud anti-Clinton chorus, but there's no actual evidence of anything they are implying. The worst thing anyone found was that she met with some donors (not a scandal. this is routine politician stuff). Some got access for various reasons, some were turned down. Matt Yglesias had a pretty good breakdown of the non-scandal and misleading reporting over at Vox http://www.vox.com/2016/8/24/12618446/ap-c...ndation-meeting

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 02:38 PM) The reason it isn't syringe and some epinephrine is that you need to actually know how to use the syringe, etc. Evidently it isn't overly cut and dry so you'd have to have each person in the family receive more extensive training which exists (as well as any caregivers / day care / etc). And well, to be frank, I'm not going to risk someone screwing that up vs the simple approach when we are talking about a potential life threatening situation. Not something to mess around with. Last year, my wife had a child with an extremely severe dairy allergy. Luckily it never came up in her classroom, but he carried an EpiPen with him 24/7. You want anyone around the person to be able to administer the medication quickly, accurately and simply, and that just wouldn't happen with a jar of medication and a syringe.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 01:23 PM) At prices that high, it's amazing some other competitor hasn't swooped in to make a generic brand and completely cut the legs out from under Mylan. edit: according to random internet site, apparently there have been attempts but the FDA is acting as a road block. https://mises.org/blog/lack-epipen-competitors-fdas-fault For those prices i'd buy a syringe and some Epinephrine. My niece has severe allergies and I know my sister has used Epipens in the past. She's never complained about the cost though. Mises.org is the land of completely-off-the-deep-end libertarians who argue against child labor laws or even parents having a legal obligation to feed their own children fwiw. Everything everywhere is always the government's fault in their eyes, the gold standard is absolutely necessary, if reality contradicts theory so much the worse for reality etc. etc. Austrian economics is just flat-out nutty. As the editorial points out, relying on a syringe and epinephrine is a lot trickier to make sure the dosage is accurate, and if the dosage isn't accurate, it won't help. And schools sure as hell aren't going to take that risk when they're required to carry the medication.

There's been more news in the past couple of weeks about there not being enough or in some cases any insurance providers in some health exchange markets.
-
OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
Sure, but as he points out, that still leaves the people that can least afford to pay the sticker price and who are also the least likely to have insurance/good insurance in a bind. The EpiPen is a high-profile case, but this is the same garbage that that Martin Shkrelli was pulling and that happens all the time under the radar. Something similar happened a couple of years ago when albuterol inhalers had to change their propellants--all of a sudden, a couple of drug companies were able to re-patent the medication and jack prices through the roof as generics were forced out of the market.
